HAYES: TOWN FIRST KNOWN AS DUGAS PASTURE
In the beginning Hayes was known as DUGAS PASTURE, or La Savanne des Duga s. It was named for Dugas, a cattle grazer from Andrus Cove, who discover ed this bountiful pasture land ideal for grazing his wild cattle. They cou ld be kept here without supervision because the area was bounded on the ea st by the Lacassine Bayou, on the north and west by swamp, and on the sou th by marsh.

Eloi Primeaux of Hayes, who?s done extensive research on this area says, t here is no recorded history on the Dugas family, except that they were Aca dians, migrating to Louisiana in about 1755, and settling at AndrusCove, t wo miles northeast of Lake Arthur. They had large herds of cattle.

Dugas did not want settlers to come into this area because they?d ruin h is good cattle and his pastureland. He managed to keep them off, until Tho mas Hayes came along. It is believed that Dugas may have died about that t ime.

Thomas Hayes? ancestor - William Hayes - came to Louisiana some times befo re 1784 from Halifax , PA, and settled in St. Landry parish. In 1832 Thom as Hayes moved into Dugas Pasture to become the first white settler ther e. He married Mary Ann Foreman, from Andrus Cove, and they settled near t he Lacassine Bayou.

Hayes' great-great granddaughter, Mrs. Tom Taylor of Lake Charles tel ls of a near tragedy the Hayes suffered shortly after moving to Dugas Past ure. "Thomas Hayes was gravely ill with typhoid fever. There were no neigh bors, and no doctors. Their child -Paren - was just a toddler.

"Mrs. Hayes knew she had to leave to get help for her critically ill husba nd, so she tied the young toddler to the bedstead, put out plenty of fo od and water for him, and left. Crossing the Lacassine Bayou in a pirogu e, she then used a horse to travel about tifteen miles through the isolate d, unsettled territory to the Andrus Cove Ferry on the Mermentau. James An drus took her to his home by flatboat. Then he got William Holland To ri de to Crowley To find a doctor .

Two days later the group got back to the Hayes home where they found Thom as Hayes still alive and recuperating from his battle with typhoid. The yo ung child - Paren - who'd been tied to the bedstead, was dirty, and crust y, and upset. But he was physically alright.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  James (Jacques) William Andrus, Sr. was born in 1760 in of, North Carolina (son of Benjamin Andrus and Marie Hargraves); died on 10 Feb 1816 in Opelousas Post, Louisiana.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Religion: Catholic

    Notes:

Andrews, Jacques (Benjamin & Marie Hargrave) m Lucie Hayes (Opel Ch.)

James "Jacques" Andrus was born in 1760 probably in North Carolina. He was the son of Benjamin Andrus, Sr., and Marie Thornell Hayes. James came to Spanish Opelousas with his father between 1777 and 1780. James died on the 10th of February 1816.
    ---
James is believed to be the "Guillaume" Andrews and Lucy Hayes listed in the Vital Records Index of North America and the SW Louisiana Records by Father Hebert. The date of births of the children match those of James. The middle name of James was probably William. Guillaume or Guilmus was probably French or Spanish for William.

James married Lucy Louise Hayes in British West Florida before 1779 before coming to Spanish Opelousas. This would fit the time period between 1777 and 1780 that the Andrus family was known to arrive in Louisiana. Lucy died in St. Landry Parish sometime before 1825. Lucy has a probate or succession at the Opelousas Courthouse #350 dated 1825.

James and Lucy had the following children:

James Andrus, born 15 Nov 1792, died after 1850.
D'Autrive Claiborne Andrus, born 1775, died July 1831.
Clemence Andrus, born 2 Dec 1787, St. Landry Parish, LA.
Isabelle Andrus, born May 1780, St. Landry Parish, LA.
Sarah Celeste Andrus, born 2 Dec 1784, St. Landry Parish.
Elisa Andrus, born 7 Feb 1794, St. Landry Parish, LA.
Joseph II Andrus, born 19 Jun 1797.
Susanne Henriette Andrus, born 12 Oct 1799, St. Landry.
Raquel Andrus, born 2 Oct 1796, St. Landry Parish, LA.

Taken from "The Andrus Family of St. Landry Parish, LA"
    by Gene Swann

The earliest record that was found of James Andrus was in a Geneology Book of all Louisiana Parishes. These books contain copies of newspapers, census data, obituraries, etc. The 1793 land census of Opelousas has a listing of James Andrus. It shows the original French and is translated.

Quarter de M. James Andrus (part of Mr. James Andrus holdings)

    James Andrus 30 a.
    William Wikoff 75 a.
    Joseph Andrus 30 a.
    Thomas Hoffbauer 10 a.
    William Gilchrist 15 a.
    Edward Foreman 20 a.
These men listed under James Andrus must be what we would call sharecropping.

He married Louise Hays of Pennsylvania and prospered well, although it seems his brother Joseph did better. In the 1810 census we see that the brothers and their sons and daughters ae still living close together. All are slave owners, but Jph seems to be the wealthiest, owning about 50 slaves. The 1820 census shows him with 44 slaves of various ages. Twenty-four are engaged in agriculture and 4 engaged in manufacturing, probably the fur hats mentioned on his father's page.

LUCY HAYES married JAMES ANDRUS before 1779 in British West, Florida. Opelousas Post lists his children and dates of baptism. See File for copy. It lists him as Guillaume so his name may have been James William or William James. Children's names and dob's match those in Southwest La. Records by Hebert. There are also some ref. to him is Hebert's books as Benjamin. Opel Census 1788 lists him with 3 men 3 women 41 cows 9 horses and 6 arpets of land.

Forman, James of Opel (Edouard & Marie Burnett) m 5 Feb 1805 Susanne Cole of Natchez (Opel Ch: v.1-supp. #24)

(Fontenot: Acadia Parish, La Vol 1 P 42)
The Cole and Foreman families both lived for a time in the Natchez District of Mississippi before moving to Louisiana. Members of both families were early settlers in the area which is now know as Acadia Parish. James Cole, who was Susan's father and James Foreman are both shown to be owners of riverbank strips of land fronting Bayou Plaquemine Brulee on an Acadia Par. map that represents land ownership prior to 1803. James Foreman was the original owner of his tract, claiming ownership by settlement and occupancy. (Fontenot: Acadia Parish La Vol 1 P 21)
Susan and James were married 5 Feb 1805. the Marriage was registered in the Opelousas Catholic Church. (Hebert: Southwest La Records, vol 1 p 135).
Apparently James did not retain ownership of his land on Bayou Plaquemine Brulee but moved his family to another area. Several bits of information substantiate this. George King, probate judge from Opelousas at the time of James' death i3 stated in the succession that he had traveled 70 miles to the last residence of the deceased. It is not possible to travel that distance from Opelousas and still be on Bayou Plaquemine Brulee. Further, Hampton Holland, orally relating family history stated that his grandmother, Zilia Ann Foreman (dau. of James and Susan) was from the Lacassine, LA area. Lacassine is about 70 miles "as the crow flys" from Opelousas. (St. Landry Parish Court House. Succ # 619)
Susan remarried in 1835 to Nelson Higginbotham, widower of Judith Ware. Mr Higginbotham received his authority to celebrate marriages in 1832 and thereby was a Justice of the Peace.
Susan died in 1881 at age 92.

    Research Notes:
Trees on Rootsweb show the James married To MCCleland as the son of James and Susan Cole. Dates are close to not working. Forman/McCleland m was 1819 Forman/Cole m 1806. If James Jr b after marriage, then 1806 makes him only 13 to marry in 1819. Est his b at 1800 is 4 yrs before marriage.
Also, mother Susanne Cole - b 1789. He could not be her son and born 1800 or any time earlier. That puts her at 11. If she were 15, that puts him b at 1804, meaning he married at 15 - which is the only possible age to meet both dates, but not likely. Doesn't quite add up.

    update 30 Nov 2015
Looking at 1820 census and age groups, James Sr. and James Jr. are both in the same age range, 26-44. Each has to be at the respective far end of the range, meaning James Jr. was born abt 1796, so his marriage to Elizabeth in 1819 would be 23 years. However if Susanne Cole born 1789 is his mother, that puts her age at his birth at 7. James Sr.'s age 18. James Sr. must have had a 1st wife.
