    Notes:

Charles C. Burch was a steamboat captain and came to Johnson's Bayou, LA. in the early 1800's from Ohio. Moved to Sabine Pass, TX in 1846. His 2 brothers, Increase R. moved to Sabine Pass, TX in 1847 and Sherwood moved in 1854. Charles moved cotton & timber up and down the Neches & Sabine Rivers. He was captain of the steamboat Mary Falvey as early as 1858.
In the mid 1800's, it was possible to get a riverboat as far north as Longview, TX when the rainy season was good. Today one can only go as far as North Orange, TX.

Charles' father was from New York and his mother was from Scotland. Charles was found in the 1870 Census of Cameron (Johnson's Bayou), LA. and the 1850 census in Jefferson Co. (Sabine Pass), TX.
In the publication: Cotton Bales, Keelboats, and Stern wheelers. A History of Sabine River Trade, 1837-1900, in 1859 the steam boat "Sabine" appeared on the Sabine River out of Sabine Pass, TX. The packet belonged to the Burch brothers of Sabine Pass and Capt. Charlie Burch soon left his command as master of the "Mary Falvey" to become the Pilot on the "Sabine". It's 15 member crew list enumerated in the census would indicate that the steamboat was well equipped to accommodate freight and passengers. The crew included Increase R. Burch and Master Sherwood Burch, clerk. It also mentions Neil Burch. Also in the same publication, it is mentioned by Henry R. Green, a Galveston newspaper correspondent and school teacher at Beaumont, while on a trip on the steamer, "Mary Falvey:, in November 1859, that Captain Charles Burch was a "popular commander, sociable, generous and clever." Green added that the packet was "fitted up in fine style...having good accommodations, excellent fare, and kind and gentlemanly officers."

In April, 1861, the "Sabine" was tied up at Sabine Pass. Increase Burch became captain of a Confederate artillery company and Charles Burch served as a pilot or captain on a number of Confederate gunboats and transports. During the Battle of Sabine Pass in 1863, Charles Burch is listed among the crew as pilot of the "Uncle Ben". The "Uncle Ben" and "Josiah Bell" steamed from Orange, TX on January 20, 1863 and arrived in Sabine Pass in order to take part in the battle. Both steamers were instrumental in towing the captured Union vessels back to Sabine Pass.
Charles C. Burch is listed in the 1850 Census of Jefferson Co., TX, in the household of Increase (J.R.) Burch.
In the early 1850's there was an outbreak of yellow fever in Sabine Pass and it's possible that Hannah Topping (Charles' first wife) succumbed to the fever. Facts are unknown as of yet.

James* married Emily* Burrell on 27 May 1847 in Sabine Pass, Jefferson Co, Texas. Emily* (daughter of Robert* Burrell and Susanne* Clark) was born in 1829 in Louisiana; died before 1860 in Jefferson Co, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 11.  Emily* Burrell was born in 1829 in Louisiana (daughter of Robert* Burrell and Susanne* Clark); died before 1860 in Jefferson Co, Texas.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Residence: Abt 1830, Jefferson Co, Texas
    • Census: 25 Oct 1850, Sabine Pass, Jefferson Co, Texas

    Notes:

Emily died sometime before 1860. How long beforehand she died is not known. We only know that she was alive in 1854 when the last girl Mary was born. The census of 1860 was taken on July 11th, and the four girls had been taken in by three family members, all living in close proximity to each other. James has not been found in the 1860 census. He had been a soldier in the Mexican war and also was in the Civil War. Possibly he was away in military service.
Alzina, the oldest at 12 years old, and Mary, the youngest at 6 years old, were both living in the John McCall household (Residence 361 in census record) where their grandmother Mary Johnson Hayes Gallier was also staying.
John had just married Martha Ann Garner, also daughter of Matilda Hayes Garner and sister of Ann Garner McCall. They had married in January of the year before, but she is not listed in the household and is not found in any 1860 census record.
Matilda, the 2nd oldest, is next door (residence 359), living with her aunt, Matilda Hayes Garner and husband Jacob Garner and children.
Nancy, 8 years old, was taken in by her cousin, Ann Garner McCall whose mother Matilda, next door, who took in her sister Matilda. Ann was married to James McCall, brother of John McCall. Also living with them was John Johnson, a cousin. They were living in residence 358.

1880 census, daughter Mary states her mother was born in Louisiana.

    Notes:

The Orrs ran an inn in the Atascocita District of Texas before it became a Republic. George Orr was the Alcade for a time. They divorced, and Tilpah got a divorce, or he did, and she remarried Ben C. Franklin, her overseer.
The marriage was told in a history of the county. I do not find any papers on this but it was a Catholic settlement under the Mexican Government. The officers for Mexico were housed in the Orr inn. I think they were able to arrange it. The son, Willaim Orr, married my gggrandmother, Martha
Caroline Munson but died at an early age.

Joannah Orr, daughter of George and Priscilla Orr, were formerly of Johnsons Bayou, but about 1822 Orr followed Henry Griffith, Reuben and Solomon Barrow to Chambers County, Texas. In 1825 Orr was appointed the Mexican "alcalde" for the Liberty Municipality, which then contained an area the size of ten present-day Southeast Texas counties. In 1826 Stephen F. Austin appointed Orr to accompany and guide John C. Williams, who had been appointed by Austin to map and chart all navigable waterways, which fed into Sabine Lake.
