    Notes:

They were living in Mendon at the time of their marriage, but it was recorded in Milford, performed by a Justice of the Peace. They may have been evacuating the town at the time, as it was burned by Indians a few days later (King Phillip?s War). Their first three children were born during their ?exile? in Braintree. They moved back to Mendon by 1680. After Jacob died, Huldah married Ebenezer Staples. Thayer {a} has Huldah married 13 Apr 1697 to Samuel Wilkerson, but that marriage should be her daughter Huldah [3712.4].

Jacob and Huldah are Congregational. Jacob died without a will, leaving an estate of 267 pounds (about $30,000 today). They had difficulty dividing the estate, so the farm was sold to oldest son Jacob for 183 pounds.

FIRST GENERATION:--- BANFIELD CAPRON, a stowaway from England, supposedly from Chester. but no Caprons have been found there. There are numerous Caprons in Devon and several in Somerset. There are several Callenders in Devon, including an Elizabeth born 1661, daughter of John. Have not made positive ID on this Elizabeth. Believe the Holden book to be wrong in assuming Banfield to have been from Chester. (From DE SILVA)

"NEW HAMPSHIRE" by Ezra Stone, 974.2 S799 Vol. 3, pages 1219-1220 in the Los Angeles Library:--No information has thus far been gathered relative to the origin and history of the Capron Family prior to its establishment in America. The numerous families of this name in New England are all descendants from one common ancestor, and the story of his secret flight across the ocean, briefly narrated in the succeeding paragraph, will serve to show that the stowaway passenger on the trans-Atlantic steamships of the present day is not entirely a modern innovation.
In 1674, Banfield Capron, born in Chester, England in 1660, conceived an ardent desire to seek his fortune in America, but the funds with which to pay his passage, as well as the necessary permit to leave the country, were beyond the reach ofe venturesome youth. He was determined, however, to cross the sea, and, in company with three other impecunious youths secreted himself in the hold of an emigrant ship about to sail for New England. When the vessel was well out to sea, the quartette of adventurers discovered themselves to the astonished captain and crew, but the master was unwilling to disobey the stringent law against transporting passengers who had failed to procure the required license, and would have turned back had not the mate and crew interceded in behalf of the stowaways with such earnestness as to cause him to relent and proceed westward. Soon after young Capron reached Boston, a family named Callender, whom he had known in England, arrived there, and going with them to Rehoboth, MA, remained in their family for a number of years, eventually marrying one of the daughters. He subsequently removed to Attleboro, where his first wife, whose parents, the Callenders, were in affluent circumstances, made him wealthy. He resided in Attleboro for the remainder of his life, which terminated August 20, 1752, at the advanced age of ninety-two years. His second wife was Elizabeth Blackington, of Attleboro, who died May 20, 1735, and his third wife, whom he married December 16 of the latter year, was Mrs. Sarah Daggett, (nee Norton) widow of Deacon John Daggett, of Attleboro. To each of his surviving children he gave a farm of about two hundred acres.

His 12 children, all of whom were of his first union, were all born in Bristol, MA.

The following items are from Philip De Silva, 802 Enderby Drive, Alexandria, VA, 22302: "ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF PAWTUCKET" by GRIEVE describes him as "being of medium height, strongly built, of light complexion with blue eyes and light hair with a reddish tinge."

    Notes:

From the publication "George Aldrich Genealogy", the following is transcribed from page twenty seven.

George Aldrich. From the notes of Marcus M. Aldrich and other sources we derive the following: In the words of the printed record. George Aldrich said - "God brought me to America from Derbyshire, England, 6 November in the year 1631." Thesedoubtedly are the words of George Aldrich the reputed progenitor of the Aldriches living in America, formed in his own mind, inscribed with his own hand, verified in his own experience.

    http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Marina/2343/
God brought me to America from Derbyshire, England, November 6, 1631. These are the words of George Aldrich, the progenitor of the American Aldrich race, and in which his unqualified faith In the over-ruling power of God In all things is clearly expressed.
"As stated above, George Aldrich was a tailor, and it is concluded that it was by this trade he gained subsistence, for with but one acre of land at Dorchester and only eight at Braintree, it would appear that he was paying but little attention to agriculture. It is also found that of sons, John and. Peter, thus leaving him with but thirteen and one-third acres in his home lot. As he was about 60 years of age when coming to Mendon it is doubtful about his ever engaging much in farming here. The authorities who had the matter in charge, fixed for the rule of settling the new township of Mendon, that those who had been accepted as worthy to become members of the seemingly select company should reach the new territory before the seventh month, 1665, and, as stated above, Ferdinando Thayer and George Aldrich were among the first to comply with this requirement."

"At Mendon George Aldrich had a houselot set off to him a little southerly of the present Mendon village, which lot today comprises the southerly portion of the Gilbert Gaskill farm; and the house where George Aldrich lived, and some three or four generations after him, must have stood, in the vicinity of the Gilbert Gaskill vegetable garden, opposite the Gaskill house."

"Until 1786 the homestead of George Aldrich was in the hands of his descendants. At this time Rev. Caleb Alexander, the sixth settled minister of Mendon, bought the ancient Aldrich homestead, together with the John Harber houselot, (which sometime previous had come Into possession of Stephen Aldrich, a great grandson of the first George) the above-mentioned Gaskill house being situated on the John Harber houselot."

"George Aldrich had eleven children, all of whom were born before his coming to Mendon, his youngest, son, Jacob, being seven years old at that time. George died In Mendon March 1, 1682 and his wife Katherine Jan. 11, 1692. His first child., Abel, was probably born In England, and. as I find no trace of him or his birth date, it is concluded that he died there. Joseph, his second child, married Patience Osborne and came to Mendon with his father, he also becoming a proprietor. Joseph's houselot of 20 acres comprised the northerly portion of the N. R. George farm, extending across the road and taking in the southerly portion of the present home place of Julius A. George. The house of Joseph Aldrich stood in the vicinity of where our former village blacksmith, the late John Barry, lived and died. Joseph Aldrich stayed in Mendon until about the time of his father's death in 1682 when he removed to what is now Smithfield, Rhode Island, in which state many of his descendants are still found, including the Hon. Nelson W. Aldrich, the financial leader of the United States Senate, whose daughter married John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Joseph Aldrich was of the Quaker faith and tradition has It that on this account his house was spared at the burning of the town in 1676 by King Philip's warriors. The next three of George Aldrich's children all died young. John, the sixth child, married Sarah Thompson, daughter of John and Sarah Thompson of Mendon. He had a third part of his father's houselot and may properly be termed a proprietor. His lot of 15 1/3 acres comprised the southerly portion of the said N. R. George farm and his house is supposed to have been In the vicinity of where the Nathan George "yellow house" so called, formerly stood, In front of the town's burying ground. John Aldrich removed from Mendon to Bridgewater about the time of the King Philip war, where he is supposed to have lived until his death. "

"Peter, the eighth child, has not been positively traced but he is believed to have removed to Long Island and become the progenitor of the Aldrich branch who for many generations have existed there. Mercy, the ninth child, married John Randall, a son of Robert Randall of Weymouth, and as the births of some of their children are recorded in Mendon, it is evident that they lived here for a while at least. It is found, however, that they subsequently removed to Weymouth and spent their days on his father Robert's farm. Martha, the eleventh child of George Aldrich, married John Dunbar, and while they had a son born in Mendon, I have gained no further knowledge of them worthy of mention."

"I will now go back to the tenth child, Jacob, who married Ferdinando Thayer's daughter Huldah, and from here on the title of my paper, "The Thayer-Aldrich Tribe" applies. Jacob Aldrich and Huldah Thayer were married November 5, 1675 and in the main it will be upon their descendants that the remainder of this paper will treat. Jacob settled in Mendon on the Aldrich homestead which was bequeathed to him by his father, and while I do not wish to speak disparagingly of my own side of the house, I feel forced to admit that of the innumerable descendants of Jacob Aldrich and Huldah Thayer the Thayer blood has predominated. They had a family of twelve children, the most of whom grew to adult age. To six of their sons sixty-five children were born, and with eighteen children born to their daughters, eighty-three grand children are credited to Jacob Aldrich and Huldah Thayer."

George Aldrich of Derbyshire m. Katherine Seald Sep. 3 1629. On Nov 6, 1631 he came to America and first settled in Dorchester, Ma, then in Braintree, and in 1633 before the seventh month came to the territory which in 1667 was incorporated as a town and called Mendon. He, with six other men being the first pioneers of the town.
Dec. 7, 1636 George Aldrich was made a Freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in Dorchester, MA. At that time church membership was a requisite for becoming a freeman. Only freemen could vote and hold office; so it was carefully arranget only "orthodox" persons should have any part in the government. As it was, they emigrated to America for this reason and for many other factors.
On Feb. 24 1640 Land was granted by the general Court of Massachusetts Colony to George Aldrich, John French, George Shepard, Thomas Thayer, Daniel Lovett and others.
On June 9 1663 George Aldridge, tailor, and Katherine his wife sold to Richard Thayer for 30 pounds sterling one dwelling house at Montreol in Braintree 2 orchards, 8 acres bounded east and west on Richard Thayer north and Joseph Crosky Son Montreol River. After the sale he bought 240 acres of land, called Aldridges farm, situated near Great Pond on Braintree, which was sold later to a man called Deafie in 1677, the time at which George and his family moved back to Mendon after King Philip War ended.
The tablet at Founder's Park in Mendon, in memory of the founders of Mendon, "The Old Mother Town", settled 1663, incorporated 1667, lists at the first three meeting houses, in 1668: Ferdinando Thayer, George Aldrich, Daniel Lovett, John , John Woodland, John Harbor, Mathias Puffer, Joseph White, John Thompson, Walter Cook, Abraham Staples, John Gurney and John Rockwood. In 1680 it lists Samuel Hayward, William Holbrook, Angel Torrey, and in 1690 it lists Robert Taft, Benjamin Wheelock, Josiah Chapin, James Keith, Eleazer Daniels.

    WHERE IS GEORGE BURIED?

Written for " Pickering Pitchforks" May-1994 by Alice Pickering Palladini

"There is a huge unmarked boulder, in The Old Cemetery in Mendon, Ma. and many throughout the years have written George1 is buried under this boulder.. The reasoning being that George's land abutted the Old Cemetery and it was the natural location to inter his remains. Also other Aldrich's are buried near that site. However, in Uxbridge, Ma., (once part of Mendon, ) on the corner of Glendale Rd. & Aldrich St. is an old Cook/Aldrich Historic Cemetery."

"At the entrance of this cemetery stands a Memorial stone & large plaque that was erected by descendants of the first George and Jacob2, and this plaque reads, " Buried Here ----------" George Aldrich, Jacob Aldrich, Seth Aldrich, Samuel Aldrich, lyman Aldrich, Sylvanus Bucklin Aldrich, Edward Irving Aldrich and that this Burying Ground was restored by Richard Stoddard Aldrich 1955; 8th in direct line of George Aldrich."

"The question is, did the family of George drive 10 miles in 1683 to bury George in Uxbridge (then also Mendon) or did they go less than a half mile and inter his remains in the Old Cemetery, that abutted his land????"

"This question will probably never be answered in our life time nor any other... I believe the Uxbridge Memorial plaque to be just that; a Memorial Plaque to George1 & Jacob2 erected by his descendant and his remains are probably under the boulder in the Old Cemetery in Mendon.. "

Decided to take a check on what's available in the Family History
Library, SLC on the Aldrich records (there are 70 references) yesterday.

    Here is what I found:

Alice Cady's Bowen Family Records, filed in Vermont Library contained some very interesting information about George and Katherine. This was 1944. The information contained within are pre-1944.
The references led to New England Genealogical and Historical Register. Seems one of descendants has the exact date of marriage! and exact date of arrival in Boston! Plus other info as well.
    George Aldrich died 1 March 1682/3 (Register vol 75, p. 321) will dated 2 Nov 1682.
Married 5 Nov 1629 Catherine Seald (Raymond Meyers Tingley in Register)
Catherine born 1610, died Mendon 11 Jan 1691.
was in Swansea 1669-1670 before returning to Mendon.
Sailed 6 Nov 1631. (Raymond Meyers Tingley mentioned this in Register)
    Was at Suffolk, MA 1635
There was a mention in Register that Raymond Meyers Tingley was researching/collecting the genealogies of the descendants of George Aldrich. Mention said he lived at Herrick Centre, PA. That would be before 1944. Wondering what became of him and his records?
In Bowen genealogy, Abel, the oldest child/son DIED 1683!
    Vol 49 p. 350 of Register....
George was made freeman at Dorchester 7 Dec 1636. Was at Braintree
    1640-1663. Mendon 1663-1683

Yesterday I was a bit flabbergasted to see some manufactured information about George Aldrich.

This is in addition to some falsehoods last week on the list about him too.

It is quite clear that we need to have a page set up at NAA to set record straight concerning George's facts and fictions.

Like the claim about him coming over in Nov 1631 which is disproved because the writers of "Great Migrations" couldn't find anything about him before 1635.

Also another fixed claim on his birth place, Derbyshire, England - again - another fiction - and nothing to support it.

3rd one is his exact marriage - another fiction. We have only two dates (Sep or Nov 1629) and nothing hard to back up either one.

    4. father George of Canfield, - good grief - couldn't anyone realize it is impossible for him to be father of our George. Him dead 1599 or is that 1601 and our George born 1605.

    5. Abel - the oldest one - what hard evidence to show him ever existed?

    Etc, etc.

    FERDINANDO Thayer:
He spelt & signed with two small ff 's ffardinando ?? :) why no one
    knows,,
However in the early " Mendon Annals" his name is first spelt, FARDINANDO.
But Ferdinando is the name used.
He was not Spanish as many thought, because of his first name,
They say probably he was named after Ferdinando Gorges.
However . the connection between Thayers and Gorges is not known.
