    re: Laura's last name
Sherry Sharpadded this on 18 Jun 2010
I got all excited, "He found her!" - but when I looked at the census records -- don't think it's the same person. The Laura in the Meaux family in 1900 is 16, birth month, April 1884. She's too old to be ours. Our Laura is consistently born 1894, give or take a month (1910 she's 17 -- 1920 she's 25 -- 1930 she's 36). Also, if Moak is right (looks like it is!) the SS gives her birth as 12 March -- not April. So I really don't think Laura Meaux is Mrs. Laura (..) Cornwell Jones. If your aunt is right, that her name was Moak, then that raises a question. Laura was about 38 when she and Harvey split - considering Amos was b 1934. It's very likely she would have married again (to Moak?) and died with that married name. But if Moak was her maiden name, then why would she have gone back that far into life to be using it at death. Does your aunt have any more info about that? I asked my mom - again - she doesn't know, but she said Davis sounded familiar to her, but that's as far as she could say. I'm bettin' that Moak was another husband. I found a living descendant of Laura/Cornwell thru their son Allen - but can't find how to get in touch with them - other than it looks like they're in Angelina County. There's a tree on Ancestry that has a little bit of this -- texaspatty10 -- at least it's a couple of leads to somebody who might know. What I found is posted on my site. If you want to get into my site to see the living dates, I'll tell you how to sign in thru email. but it goes like this: 2 Allen Taylor Cornwell b. 22 Jun 1910 d. 21 Oct 1977 married Maxine Celestine Marble b. 01 Jan 1922 d. 30 Mar 1990 3 Patricia Eugenia Cornwell b. 27 Nov 1961 + James Dorvin Cook b. 30 Aug 1960 Patricia and James div and James remarried Lisa Carter in 2002. Did not find another marriage for Patricia. (If you will, shoot me an email if you reply to this because Ancestry doesn't seem to send a notice that a reply has posted.)

Thanks..Sherry. I heard from my Aunt Valli Jones (Dad's sister) that it was Moak, which is why I had it initially Moak, and also included it as an alternate name in ancestry.com. I found some information on Moak in Louisana, but it seemed to blend with Meaux, so still unsure on this one. Thanks, Jordan
    Laura's last name
Sherry Sharpadded this on 13 Jun 2010
Well, I'm going to back to unknown on her maiden name. I contacted the guy who had her name as Davis and asked where he got it. He had no clue, just stuff people had given him, etc. I also looked through his file as he shares the Shermans and Sheltons (Harvey Sr's mother was a Sherman) and he's got more than a few mistakes. So, I'm leaving a note that Laura might be a Davis - but put her name back to Mrs. Cornwell in my file. I did look a pretty good while for a Laura Davis and found nothing, not that that's conclusionary in any way, but I think this "Davis" name clue is just too weak.

From Sherry Sharp (cousin) Hi, Jordon! Is your dad Robin Jones? I don't have you in my file! But I'd sure like to! :)) You sent me scurrying to look for Laura's name and I I actually just found it. She was a Davis. My mom remembers her daughter Lolette because she said Lolette worked in a dress shop and mother would buy dresses from her. Looks like Laura died in 1978 in Beaumont. I'm finding this info in a tree on Ancestry. But I also found your site at Rootsweb http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=11271979&id=P107249359 It looks like you have a little mixup on Sr. and Jr. Harvey Jr. was married to Anna Belle Davis on 13 May 1944. Laura Cornwell (we now know was a Laura Davis) was married to Sr. Umm, wonder if the father/son married into the same Davis family. The site I found has the parents and siblings of Columbus Cornwell but nothing more on Laura Davis other than the death year. I'll post the info on him into my file. If you can get into Ancestry, the tree I looked at is roysherman52. Do you know if Laura remarried after Harvey? We might could find her death cert if we knew what last name she was going by. Thanks for contacting me! Please send me the info on your line that I don't have!! :)) Nice to meet you, cuz! Sherry oh, would you please write back to me at lumoto@aol.com so the mail will go into my Windows Mail. Thanks!!

    Research Notes:
A couple of researchers have her maiden name as Davis, though there is no documentation and nothing to verify it. Valli Jones has family info that her last name was Moak, and there is a SS death record for Laura Moak with her birth date. Hunter Mabry says her maiden name was Davis, and Janie said she found some documentation with the name Moak.
So, best guess for now is that sometime after div from Harvey, which was around 1938, she remarried someone named Moak. So far no documentation other than the SS death index.
    ___
1937 only Moak in Beaumont is Julian L Moak, Moak the Broker, (insurance and real estate) and wife Elizabeth.
1939 Moak the Broker and Bessie Moak, wid of Henry M
    1947 Moak the Broker
Moak Emmett J Moak Meat Co 4665 Port Arthur Road
Moak Oliver J (Clotee B; City Dry Cleaners) h 5195 Irving
There were a few Moaks in Mid-County, but none with a wife Laura.

Since she died in Beaumont as Laura Moak and there were none eligible Moaks in Beaumont up to 1947 in the city directory -- assuming she married some years after her div from Jones.
Some city directory entries showed a Mrs Laura Jones as hairdresser -- need to find out if she was a hairdresser.

This is only Laura Davis that is even close to her age and doesn't conflict with 1910 and 1920 and 1930 when we have her documented. Also, white, as many of the Laura Davises from Louisiana are black.

1900 census Vernon Parish (central western LA, not that far from La Salle, central eastern LA where Laura is living with Cornwell in 1910.
    household Members:
Henry Davis 1855 45 widow LA GA GA farmer.
Louis Davis 1888 12 LA LA LA
Laura Davis 1890 10 LA LA LA
Elvin Davis 1892 8 LA LA LA
Joseph Davis 1892 6 LA LA LA

note: census page says Elvin and Joseph both born in 1892, but they are not twins. So, possibly they could have been off on Laura's age too. We have her b 1894.
Laura later gave her parents as both being b LA; and this fits.

1910 census Laura is married to Cornwell and in La Salle.
    Henry's family in 1910:
Henry Davis 56 1854 LA GA GA
Home in 1910: Pitkin Ward 5, Vernon, Louisiana
    Marital Status: Divorced
Thomas E Davis 18 1892 (This would be Elvin)
Joseph A Davis 14 1896 (2 yrs off from 10 yrs before if he was 6)
No Laura -- she said she married at age 14. So, she wouldn't be here.

    ---
1880 Vernon Parish -- Henry is with his mother, widow
he's right age, b LA parents b GA. Same place. It's same Henry.

Son Thomas is found 1930 with wife and family in same parish.

Did not see Henry after 1910, when he was 56.

We are going where they have fine schools. Mr. Norton wants me to try again to get Andrew to come live with us. I know we can do more for him than Pa will ever be able to do he has let Sister and George have a brother, and now when I ask him for one he will not let me have one. Note:
1The Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1918 killed 21 million people world-wide--more than died in World War I. It is a fascinating study of a modern Black Plague, and I am including an excerpt from the Port Arthur News dated 13 June, 1976:

"How it travelled such great distances in that autumn still baffles science. Remote Eskimo villages were discovered completely wiped out by the disease while doctors in China cried it rolled over that country like a tidal wave.
"In Boston, trading on the stock exchange went to half-days; theatres were closed; athletic contests cancelled--even a churchless Sunday was declared Sept. 22, 1918, to keep people and the disease off the streets.
"At the same time, Chicago's newly formed influenza commission called for the arrest of open-faced sneezers. But still doctors reports sadly tell of hundreds showing up at over-crowded, understaffed hospitals with coloring "blue as huckleberr." Few lived through the night.
"Continuing onto the West Coast, Seattle policemen were required to wear masks, but the sickness prevailed.
"Here in Texas, one-half of the city of San Antonio came down with the flu.
"Assuredly, each early Port Arthurian in 1918 lost at least an acquaintance, if not a friend.
"Roy McCollum, then 27-years-old, recalls being the only one in his family stricken. He said he remembers being in bed, ("The only place I felt like being,") and watching an undertaker walk past his window.
"'I remember thinking how much business this flu had brought him and the next day I heard he came down with it and died that night,' McCollum stated."
