    "History of the Sparks Family":
    First student of schoolhouse in the Sparks Settlement. Teacher was Miss Mary Page from Sabine Pass, who was paid $10 per month for teaching Emma and she was allowed to secure other children to teach. In time a one-room school was built by the settlers and the teacher was given room and board by the parents of her students. The school began in 1881 and is reported to be the first one to be located in what is now the City of Port Arthur. Records do not show how long the village school operated, but it is believed that it existed up to the time the settlement was abandoned in the early 1890s.

    Died:
    I found no Beaumonts in Jefferson County in 1870. Must be some records lost in a hurricane or fire or something. Some of them should have shown up somewhere. Anyway, last record is 1860. Some researcher had a death date 1 Dec 1863 for him, with no documentation. If he died in 1863, they were mostly likely in Grigsby Bluff as I don't believe any of the family who had moved into Beaumont proper that early.

    John married Fredericka Gentz, (immigrant) on 23 Jan 1853 in Jefferson Co, Texas. Fredericka (daughter of George* Christian "Johann" Gentz, (immigrant) and Charlotte* Uecker, (immigrant)) was born in 1833 in Dewichow, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Prussia; died in 1879 in Grigsby Bluff, Port Neches, Jefferson Co, Texas; was buried in Magnolia Cem, Beaumont, Jefferson Co, Texas. 1850 Jeff Co Census (taken Nov 14, 1850): Living with Joseph P Puslefer (b 1806 Mass), druggist
    others in his household were wife Rebecca Fredenberg (b 1805 PA);
    Francis McCall (b 1829 PA) seaman;
    James McCall (b 1831 PA) seaman, who married Anna Garner (Jacob A and Matilda "Hays" Johnson)
    John McCall (b 1833 IL) seaman, who married Martha Ann Garner (Jacob A and Matilda "Hays" Johnson);
    Elisabeth M Nodel (b 1842 TX); and Mary Ann Black (b 1827 FL).

    She married John A. Beaumont on 23 January 1852 in Jefferson Co. He was born in 1807 in Pennsylvania. He was a cabinet maker by trade. In 1850 he was shown in the Jeff Co Census as living with Charles N Baxter.
    Sapphire on the Neches: "Only two families can be identified as living at Grigsby's Bluff in 1850, namely a widower, John A. Beaumont, age 42, of Pennsylvania; his son, Jacob; and daughter Josephine, ages 11 and 8... Beaumont apparently d in Texas in 1840 for his daughter was born here in 1842, but he evidently came too late and was omitted from a land grant by the county's Board of land Commissioners, which met between 1838-1840."

    John Beaumont died sometime between 1860 and 1870 when the census shows Frederika as head of household in Sparks Settlement, with four children, Louise, Helen, James A, and John Christian, still living with her. (Sapphire on the Neches saysy had at least 5 children).

    She is buried at Magnolia Cemetery beside one of her sons.

    John Christian Beaumont married Emma Lee, daughter of Samuel Lee and ELIZA "ELIZABETH" JANE SPARKS, daughter of John S. SPARKS and Melinda JONES. Information about their family is listed under ELIZA SPARKS.

    Buried:
    I called Magnolia today (10/18/2010 -- updated 11/17/2014; see below) and lady there said that she would have no record of Fredericka since the cemetery was established in 1887 and she died prior to that (1879). "Sapphire on the Neches" book written by local historian William T. Block, stated she was buried there by one of her sons. She had two sons, James Alexander Beaumont who died 1 Nov 1941 and buried in Magnolia and John Christian Beaumont. John had lived in Kountze, so apparently James is who she is next to -- well, he was apparently buried by her if she died in 1879.

    The girl at the cemetery looked up James and found Jim A. Beaumont, that he was buried in a section they call the Public Grounds, and that it didn't state if he had a headstone. They had no record of her. The spaces and blocks are not mapped in that section. It was just an open place that McFaddin allowed indigents and others to bury their folk. (also, his d.c. states he was buried in Magnolia)

    I really doubt now that Fredericka is there. Mr. Block would have had to find some documentation that she was buried there, and Magnolia doesn't have that documentation. James' survivors would have had to know where she was in order to put m next to her. So -- seems unlikely to me - if she died in 1879.

    Besides, they were living in Grigsby Bluff (by Port Neches Park) and her father, George Christian, who died in 1868 was the first buried in Oak Bluff Cemetery. So, seems likely that's where she would be.

    I do know Block tried to be as thorough as he could, but he also was prone to surmising. I talked with him a couple of times about the Blocks and the Gentz, who he thought were somehow related -- and indeed, there was some kind of connection. I just don't know what evidence he had that Fredericka was buried in Magnolia, but it's not following logic.

    You might want to read this that I wrote about them all getting here
    http://sherrysharp.com/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I16515&tree=Roots

    "At this time in 1850 the Blocks were already in Sabine Pass, Jefferson Co. Of interest, Christian Gentz had traveled with 5 children, 3 boys and two girls. The sons are with him in Tyler, and the girls, Fredrika, 16, and Alwine 15, are found in separate households in Sabine Pass, Jefferson Co. Fredrika seems to be in a boarding house in res 259/259, and Alwine is staying with the town assessor/collector and his family. He was from NY and was actually the census taker. That household was res 251/151. The Blocks were in res 253/253, right in between the two sisters. The oldest Gentz daughter, Charlotte Maass, is recorded in 1850 Jasper census in December, one month after this census was taken; and by then her brothers Charles and Fred are listed with her. So, those two young boys (Charles is my direct ancestor) got counted in two counties. Perhaps times were really rough and they sent the girls either with or to the Blocks, or they knew they were going to Sabine Pass soon at the behest of the Blocks and they sent the girls on ahead."

    Also, one of the Gentz men -- I'm forgetting which one at the moment but it's in my file - somewhere - moved up closer to the DuPont area and had a family cemetery there. That's the one that got moved around 1956 The McFaddin Cemetery - TF Smith Homestead But she is not listed in the official records. However, those official records were from surviving family members years later trying to remember who all was buried in that site. The link will tell you who all they were.

    The most logical in my thinking is that she is in Oak Bluff.

    update 1/17/2014: Fredericka is indeed in Magnolia. Her headstone was located and posted to findagrave with the note "Wife of John A. Beaumont and daughter of William Gantz. Her monument lies in the old McFaddin section of the cemetery up on the hill."

    -----------------
    A colorful visitor in the John Sparks household was Samuel Lee, sea captain. His life had been eventful. He was born in Denmark, and after serving his apprenticeship on a sailing vessel he came to the United States, landing at New Orleans. Thence he shipped to Texas, and he liked Jefferson County so well that he remained. He took up a claim on Hillebrandt's Bayou, where he lived until he married Eliza Sparks, June 14, 1860, the ceremony being performed by George W. O'Brien, Beaumont justice of the peace. Then he built a house near the site which John Warne Gates later selected for his mansion. Jim Sparks, the next of the family to marry, brought his bride from Beaumont to another house on the lake shore. Julia Ann Sparks married Jim Courts, and another home was added to the settlement.

    http://www.oldandsold.com/articles11/port-arthur-4.shtml

    ----
    On a day in 1881, Sam Lee mounted his horse and rode over to the Page home in Sabine Pass to ask Miss Mary Page if she would be willing to come to the settlement and start a school. Miss Page described his visit when she later wrote:

    I was very young when Sam Lee came down to Sabine Pass and wanted me to come to Aurora and teach his daughter, Emma. But I'd had advantages the children there didn't have. We had a free school in Sabine Pass for children under 14 and after that we had to pay, but we could continue our studies that way. My father said I was too young to go away from home to teach, but my mother said, "You go," and I went. Beginning in 1881 I taught nearly three years in Aurora and was then called home when mother hurt her wrist in a fall and needed me to help her.

    Although Miss Page was employed primarily to teach Emm Lee, she was permitted to take other children in her school, which was a room in the Lee home. She visited her parents at week ends and during vacations, making the trip down the Lake in a rowboat equipped with a mast and sail. It is recorded that when an offshore wind prevented her landing on a return voyage, Fred Gentz picked her up out of the boat and carried her ashore.

    Mrs. Jack Beaumont of Kountze, Tex., the former Emma Lee, recalled that Miss Page wore "a very pretty poke bonnet trimmed with a number of artificial roses."

    Notes:

    They are shown living in Sparks & River Settlement on 6/23/1870, date of the census. At the time of the 1880 census, also listed in the houshold are Eliza Hayes, age 37; a servant, Eddie Albert, age 27, a carpenter; and William E. Sparks, age 27, a laborer from Texas.
    As quoted from the "History of the Sparks Family": First student of schoolhouse in the Sparks Settlement. Teacher was Miss Mary Page from Sabine Pass, who was paid $10 per month for teaching Emma and she was allowed to secure other childo teach.

    Jane, at age 78, and widowed in 1920, found in census living with grandson Walter.

    Elizabeth (Eliza) Jane was born on October 27, 1843 in Jefferson County around Taylor Bayou, where her father (John) had Sparks's Ferry. Eliza Jane married Samuel Lee on the 14 of June 1860. Samuel, who was known as "Sam", was from Denmark. He was the Captain of a sailing vessel and had decided to give up his world travels to live in the Unite States, landing at New Orleans. Then once he shipped to Texas and he liked Jefferson County so well that he remained. He took up a claim on Hillebrandt's Bayou; here he lived until he married Eliza Sparks, June 14, 1860, the ceremony being performed by George W. O'Brien, Beaumont justice of the peace. Then he built a house near the site, which John Gates later selected for his mansion.Sam was the one who talked, or ask, Miss Mary Page if she would be willing to come to the Sparks's settlement and start a school. Miss Page described his visit when she later wrote:I was very young when Sam Lee came to Sabine Pass and wanted me to come to Aurora and teach his daughter, Emma. But I'd had advantages the children there didn?t have. We had free school in (in the city of) Sabine Pass for children under 14 and after that we had to pay, but we could continue our studies that way, My father said I was too young to go away from home, to teach, but my mother said "you go" and I went. Beginning in 1871 I taught nearly three years in Aurora and was called home when mother hurt her wrist in a fall and needed me to help her.Although Miss Page was employed primarily to teach Emma Lee, she was permitted to take other children in her school, which was a room in the Lee home.

    Later they built a one-room schoolhouse. She taught all of the children at Aurora. She visited her parents at weekends and during vacation, making the trip down the Lake in a rowboat equipped with a mast and sail.Mrs. Jack Beaumont of Kountze, Texas the former Emma Lee, recalled that Miss Page wore "a very pretty bonnet trimmed with a number of artificial roses."

    Later during the winter of 1885, the settlement was swept by an epidemic that took a heavy toll of both children and adults. On August 20, 1886, a sever hurricane struck the section, the brunt of it felt at the city of Sabine Pass. (The city of Sabine Pass never rebuilt and soon was no longer called a City.) With all that had happen and very discouraged, the families on the lake decided to move in land, near Beaumont. John Sidney nor his brother, Solomon wasn't still living. We have no records when either one of them died. (may have died during the epidemic in 1885) They dismantled most of the Aurora homes and took them to build new homes. Sam Lee's home remained but he sold his interest in the Beaumont Pasture Company on August 8, 1887, for $10.00 and a deed to 439 acres of land, part of the old Joseph Grigsby head-right on the Neches river near the present town of Port Neches. He later moved to a 700 acres place that is now within the City of Grove, Texas.

    Sam and Eliza had only one child, Emma Ann, who was born on New Year's Day in 1867. Her oldest child is Walter Lee Beaumont, who was also born at the same location at Aurora, on 25 of November 1885 and now lives in (or did) Groves where he moved at the age of 6 months. Walter was still living in 1979 at the age of 94. His wife, who was Minnie Albers, lived on the old Sam Lee homestead, that was reduced to 40 acres. Walter had never worked for anyone other than himself. He was farmed, raised cattle and operated a dairy at the same location all his life. Even at 94 he still raise cattle: a Santa Gertrudis herd of about 30 head graze on his 40 acres. From all account, it appears that Walter was the oldest person still living who was born at Aurora, (the Sparks settlement) what is now the site of Port Arthur. In fact, he was probably the ONLY person stilling living who was born in the "SPARKS SETTLEMENT."

    If only all the history of the Sparks could have been written down it could have been one of the best book written.
