    History of Wayne County:
    T.T. Bonham brought the first buggy to Wayne County. It was a stylish affair, imported from Pennsylvania. E. (Edward?) Bonham, when a young man "cut a splurge" by driving in this buggy to camp meeting. The civilization represented by the Eastern buggy was in great contrast with that of which Mr. B's dinner was a type. He was a guest at a farmhouse where the principal dish was baked 'possum. Mr. Bonham would have preferred fried oysters.

    Annals of Buffalo Valley pg 287
    The Whisky Insurrection.
    1794
    September 30. The summer and fall of this year are noted for the excitement through the State, culminating in the whisky insurrection. Some of the whisky boys determined to erect a liberty pole, at Northumberland; Judge William Wilson, of Chillisquaque, and Judge Macpherson, of Dry Valley, hearing of it, determined to prevent it. They called upon Daniel Montgomery, also a justice, to assist them.
    He told them he would pull at the rope if the people required it. He, however, went with them, but rendered them no assistance in suppressing the disturbance. A fight took place Judge Wilson read the riot act, as he called it, to disperse the crowd, but they paid no attention to it. One of them presented his musket at the judge, but the old revolutionary captain cocked his pistol and made him put down the musket, under the penalty of having his brains blown out. They arrested the judge. He would not give bail, and they were afraid to put him to jail. In the melee, Jasper Ewing, the prothonotary, drew his pistol and snapped it at William Cooke. See the case reported in
    1 Yeates, 419. Kennedy's Gazette, of 3d December, has General Henry Lee's proclamation to the people of western Pennsylvania, dated at camp, at Parkinson's ferry, November 8, in command of the troops of New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia. Also, an advertisement of Doctor Priestly's works, he was then publishing.

    Indictments were found versus Robert Irwin, Daniel Montgomery, John Frick, WILLIAM BONHAM, John Mackey, senior, and Samuel McKee. Mr. Meginness says they were tried in Philadelphia, convicted, and sentenced, and that General Washington pardoned them at the end of twenty days. His account of the riot is, that the liberty pole was erected at the corner of Second and Market streets, in Northumberland. The arsenal was under care of Robert Irwin, (grandfather of the Nesbit brothers of Lewisburg.) The rioters took possession of the arsenal,
    and distributed the arms. The pole was driven full of nails, and guarded day and night. John Brady,

    1794 ANNALS OF BUFFALO VALLEY. 287

    junior, was deputy marshal, and a very determined man. A collision was imminent, when Captain Robert Cooke's company, from Lancaster, arrived, and dispersed the rioters at the point of the bayonet. An axe was called for to cut the pole down. Mrs. Bernard Hubley came running with one, her sister, Mrs. Jacob Welker, met her and tried to take the axe. Mrs. Hubley got past her, and the pole came down.

    This company passed through Buffalo Valley. At Andrew Billmyer's, a little beyond Lewisburg, a pole had been erected, but the report of the advancing troops got there before they did, and the pole was cut down and hid. The soldiers could not find it, and took their revenge in drinking up all the whisky, eating everything in the house, leaving word that Uncle Sam would pay the bill.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Ephraim (MF) Bonham, Sr was born on 14 Feb 1716 in Hunterdon Co, New Jersey (son of Samuel (MF) Bonham and Catherine Anderson); died after 1781 in of, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

    • Other-Begin: 1777, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
    • Residence: Between 1780 and 1781, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; tax list

    Notes:

    He was a maker of tallow candles.

    In 1745 he advertised lots for sale in Philadelphia where he was on the tax lists from 1769 to 1781 and, according to the amount of taxes he paid, he must have been a very wealthy man. In 1774 he was appointed election inspector. In 1776 he was a colonel in the Revolutionary forces.

    *NOTE: Hazie Book (Revised 1973) pgs 25-26; Ephram b ca 1728 listed as son of Samuel Bonham & Catherine Anderson m Margaret Jarratt in Phil 5 Mar 1761.
    However, there was a Ephraim Bonom m Marget who were members of the Swedish church (not Christ Church) who appear to be a different family, and not this Ephraim. They had a son Robert, born in Philadelphia, who was baptized in the Swede church on 7 Nov 1761. (Pennsylvania Births, Phil. Co, 1644-1765, @ 1994 John T. Humphrey)

    Note: Due to the controversy of the 2nd marriage of Hezekiah between the "Mayflower, Families through Five Generations," and the Monnette studies, due to the incredible number of births in this family and their dates, due to the naming pattern of "iah" and Ephraim being "stuck" in the middle, due to the fact that Samuel Bonham/Catherine Anderson's son Samuel was in Philadelphia and none of these "iah" brothers were apparently in Philly,(with the exception of Amariah, who died in Washington Co, PA), the fact that a Samuel Bonham signed Mabra Madden's will, it seems apparent that the Ephraim Bonham who married Susannah Jones would seem more likely Ephraim Bonham, son of Samuel/Anderson rather than son of Hezekiah, as is indicated in the Bonham research.

    DAR: Ephraim Bonham departed this life May 22 1785 aged 69 years 3 months.

    Death for Ephraim is said to be 22 May 1785 in Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey. However, that could be for the Ephraim, son of Hezekiah and 2nd wife, rather than this Ephraim. It's doubtful that he would have died in NJ when his home was in Philadelphia.

    Ephraim married Susannah Jones on 23 Dec 1742 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Susannah (daughter of Gibbs Jones and Jane Crapp) was born on 29 Sep 1722 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; was christened on 12 Dec 1722 in Christ Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; died on 28 Jan 1794 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co, Pennsylvania. Notes:

    "Col. David Taggart," in _Genealogical and Biographical Annals of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania_, published by J.L. Floyd & Co., Chicago, 1911. p9. Library of Congress microfilm collection. "...

    Thomas Taggart, the founder of this family in America and in Northumberland county, was born May 10, 1728, in Ireland, of Scotch-Irish descent, and emigrated with his brother Robert prior to 1750, the young men settling in Philadelphia, where Robert became a merchant. About 1775 Thomas Taggart arrived at the town of Northumberland, where he became a leading merchant. Settling at Queen and Front streets, near what was later the site of Morgan's shoe store, he was a well known resident of the place until his death, which occurred April 13, 1788. He married Mary Vanderbilt, a native of Philadelphia, who died in Northumberland in 1805.

    Their descendants have been prominent in public life, in business matters, and in the wars of the country. Their family was a large one, viz.:

    Elizabeth, born June 15, 1753, married William Bonham, and died about 1780 (her son, Thomas, was for many years a tanner at Northumberland, but finally removed to Wabash county, Ill., where he died);

    Christiana, born May 12, 1755, married a Mr. Sample, and settled in Allegheny county, this State;

    Robert was born Feb. 18, 1757;

    John, born June 30, 1759, died July 21, 1759;

    Catharine, born Sept. 6, 1760, married Capt. John Painter, and died in 1840;

    Thomas, born Oct. 22, 1762, died Jan. 16, 1780 (he was killed by Indians);

    Mary, born Jan. 19, 1765, married a Mr. Patterson, a noted frontiersman of Pennsylvania, and died Feb. 8, 1773 [sic, 1791];

    William, born Oct. 3, 1771, died Jan. 24, 1773;

    David, born Feb. 21, 1769, died May 17, 1812;

    William (2), known as 'Old Major' Taggart, born Aug. [unclear on copy - 6?] 1773, kept store at an early day in Northumberland and in the latter part of his life resided in Chillisquaque township, where hed died at the age of eighty years; and

    James was born Jan. 1, 178-."
