Will of John Thornton Fitzhugh was dated Jan 5 and proved in Prince William, Oct 2 1809. Legacies to wife and sons George and Lynaugh Helm Fitzhugh. If Lynaugh should die before marriage his esatate is to be equally divided between John Francis Thornton, Philip and Frances Tabb. He speaks of the dividing line between himself and his brother Thomas Fitzhugh. Refers to land given by "my father" to son Francis Thornton. Bequests to son Philip and daughter Frances Tabb, and son John. He appoints his brothers George and Francis Fitzhugh, kinsman Thomas Fitzhugh, of Staford, Thomas Fitzhugh, of Pageland, Nicholas Fitzhugh and Catlett Conway, executors. His widow Margaret qualifies as executrix.
This John Thornton Fitzhugh was evidently 51, John, born September 29, 1749, died Feb 9, 1807, son of John Fitzhugh of Bellair."
Doubtless of this branch, and a grandson of John T. Fitzhugh, was John Fitzhugh, of Brentsville, Prince William County who married first, a Miss Helm, and had issue; George, John, P.T., Wesley, Francis N., Margaret, Jane, and Elizabeth. John Fitzhugh married a second time, and had issue, Milton, Summerfield, Selina, and Eugenia.

Not long after her husband's death Margaret (Helm) Foote married John Thornton Fitzhugh, born 29 Sep 1749, d 9 Feb 1809, a man twenty years younger than her first husband.
John Thornton and Margaret (Helm) Fitzhugh had five chidlren, John, Lynaugh, Frank, George, and Fanny.
He was the son of John and Alice (Thornton) Fitzhugh of "Bellaire." His younger brother Thomas Fitzhugh 1753-1829 married Margaret Helm's sister Lucinda Helm.

Election of the Delegates in Prince William County

By Virtue of an Ordinance passed at a Convention held at the Town of Richmond on the seventeenth Day of July last I, Lynaugh Helm gentleman Sheriff of said County of Prince William did cause the several Freeholders of the said County to be convened at the Courthouse thereof on the first day of this Instant April for the purpose of electing two Delegates to serve in General Convention for one Year then next following agreeable to the aforesaid ordinance who made choice of Cuthbert Bullitt and Henry Lee Esqrs. whom I do hereby certify were duly elected to act and do as in and by the said Ordinance is directed and required. Given Under my hand and Seal this fourth Day of April one thousand seven-hundred and seventy-six.

Lynaugh Helm as he was a captain of a foot company of Prince William County Milita, Member of the House of Burgess in 1772 and 1778 and aided the Continiental army during the revolution. He reportedly was granted large tracts of land in Kentucky for his service (Conkwright P.97).

"For many the most exciting possibility for assuring one's future seemed to lie in following the footsetps of Captain Lynaugh Helm. Lynaugh (or, as he preferred, Leonard) helm, was a son of Thomas Helm who had patented 283 acres 'on Dorrell's Run adjoining John Catlett" in 1727 and had followed it with several other grants on the branches of Cedar Run." pg 251

"14. Lynaugh Helm died soon after the war. In 1796 his son Achillis Helm, deeded 750 acres of his Illinois grant to Col. Simon Triplett of Loudoun County "in consideration of the trouble and expense of the said Triplett in getting a law passed by the Virginia Assembly to carry into effect his claim of 3,334 acres to which Leonard helm, father to Achillis, was entitled in right of his command in the Illinois Regiment."

Now it looks as though Jane (wife of Leonard) died two days after her son Thomas was baptized - childbirth must have killed her. Did this same Leonard then remarry Eliz. Greenwood on 23 Nov 1687 - if he did. then, he didn't waste much time, though he obviously needed to find another wife to look after his baby.

NOW, from the above we know that Leonard's son, Thomas, was baptized up at Cartmel in the Lake District and it says that Leonard is from Churchtown. The only Churchtown on the UK atlas is the one in Lancashire and that is near Garstang (nearly at Goosnargh). Cartmel may have been Jane's home place. Thus, maybe this Leonard could be described as a Goosnargh Leonard Helme. If so,the link with Leonard of Virginia is in prospect.

The will of Maurice Lynaugh, dated 28 September 1751; probated 12 August 1755, bequeathed a Negro man to his grandson, Lynaugh, after his wife Mary's death. His daughter Margaret received all the remainder of his estate, under the same condits, she being his sole heir. [Book O, pg. 306, Stafford County] The Lynaughs had deeded land to Gabriel MUFFETT, of Prince William County and later filed suit against Gabriel in Chancery Court, 1752. [Deed book L, pg 209] Gabriel is believed to have been the husband of MARY HELM, daughter of Leonard Helm, the immigrant. The Lynaughs were probably early settlers in the colony of Virginia. Arthur, Rose and Mary Lynaugh arrived in 1655 and John Lynar in 1653, brought over by Ed Komp, George Cartlough and JOHN MEREDITH. John Lynar may have been the father of Maurice Lynaugh of Lancaster County, Virginia. A Margaret Lynaugh, daughter of Rose, was born 23 July 1754.
Thomas is not mentioned in his father Leonard's will. but is doubtless the son of Leonard Helm, the immigrant.. Possibly he had already received his share of the estate in land. He owned large tracts of land in Prince William and Fauquier Cties, which included Stafford County. Lynaugh, his son, was called "first cousin" by Captain William Helm, the son of Meredith, justice of Frederick County. In a civil suit in Frederick County, 4 August 1748, Thomas made a claim on the estate of Leonard Helm, the immigrant, which was not denied by Meredith, his executor.
Recorded in The Virginia Genealogist, Thomas, of Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, bought land from John Madden of Hamilton Parish, Prince William County.
Thomas' will mentions that he had eight children; only six are verified (first six listed). It divided his land equally between his children.

Thomas married Margaret Neill Lynaugh about 1725 in Virginia. Margaret (daughter of Maurice Lynaugh and Mrs. Mary (..) Linaugh) was born in 1698 in Stafford Co, Virginia; died in 1769 in Prince William Co, Virginia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
