Joseph Z Shelton was Lucinda's brother, and my great, great, uncle or foster great great grandfather as he raised my great grandfather, Winfield Scott Shelton. Winfield has a brother
Albert Shelton, that was also Lucinda's child but the father's are different from DNA tests.

    Research Notes:
In 2009 when John had his YDNA test the results came back as match to a Shelton in Y37 and Y67 tests. No common denominator was found.
On Feb 27, 2013, a tester in the Oglesby group was a match to him in the Y37, with a step 2 match. As it turned out, in the Shelton gedcom there was a marriage of Mary Elizabeth to Gustavas Adolphus Oglesby. Checking the tester's pedigree, his ancestor Jesse Oglesby and Gustavas descend from Constant, Sr., Jesse and Constant being brothers; making Jesse the great-uncle of Gustavas.
Following the pedigree of the Shelton tester, his ancestor was Winfield Scott Shelton who carried the maiden name of his unwed mother, Lucinda. Lucinda was sister to Mary Elizabeth who married Gustavus 1 year after Winfield Scott was married.
Gustavus was in Henderson County in the 1850 census in the same extended family community as Lucinda who was still at home with her parents. He was living with his brother Stephen and they were next door to one of Lucinda's older sisters who was already married.
The name Winfield Scott was a well-known general of the time, and as was the custom, it was popular to name their children after public personalities. The name Winfield Scott was used by at least two or three more Oglesby siblings; so it was a name they liked to use. The Sheltons did not use the name, just another hint that an Oglesby was influential in the choosing of the name.
Lucinda later had a son Albert, who, as I understand, was DNA tested and was not a match to Winfield. The Shelton tester did not match any Sheltons because that was the maternal line. He matched the Oglesby line.
It's quite obvious that Winfield's father was an Oglesby; and it's more likely than not that the father was Gustavus as his brothers were not so likely a candidate. Since he married a year later and started his own family with Lucinda's sister, it's doubtful that Lucinda's following children were fathered by him. The girls may or may not have the same father as Albert.

Gustavus married Lucinda Shelton(maybe father, not married). Lucinda (daughter of Josiah Cyrus Shelton and Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Orran) was born in 1833 in Rockingham Co, North Carolina; died before 1903 in Webster Co, Kentucky. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 13.  Lucinda Shelton was born in 1833 in Rockingham Co, North Carolina (daughter of Josiah Cyrus Shelton and Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Orran); died before 1903 in Webster Co, Kentucky.

We know that Sarah Ellen and Aggy's mother Lucinda and probably their father, depending on what you surmise, were born in North Carolina not Kentucky. I notice the census' have different and sometimes incorrect informaion The best kept secret is still a secret. It makes one wonder what was there about her that it appears that neither children nor grandchildren verbally passed on or had written down her death and burial. Many of her siblings are buried in different cemeteries around there I have visited them. I have been to the Shelton Cemetery where her parents are buried. Albert lived to be quite old but apparently he left no records either so the mystery goes on, something strange here.

Hi Vonette, some of Lucinda's siblings are buried in Mt. Lebanon but I have seen postings on Ancestry etc. that they are buried in Shelton Cemetery on Shelton Cemetery Road, David and I went out there this past summer and Doug Shelton lives there on the property, he said George Washington Shelton gave that property for the cemetery, he was not exactly aware of who was there but a lot of Sheltons are buried there. Guess you and I can do more research. We also went to Petersburg church cemetery few miles out of Sebree and Joe Z Shelton and wife are buried there, I posted a pic on Tina's site. However, I don't know where everyone went on that site etc. not much response. It appears the genealogy searches has somewhat disappeared. Thanks for the query post, always open for new or corrected info. Keep in touch

I am particularly interested in Lucinda's daughter Agnes. She married my ggrandfather, Atwood Willoughby. I have no idea what happened to my ggrandmother, Atwood's first wife Mahulda "Huldy" Patterson. They had four children, three girls and a boy who apparently did not live to adulthood. They were living in Union County KY in 1880.

It's more likely he was referred in that time and as was the custom of many to name children after politicians and other high-profile public figures. My father passed 5 years ago. He always told me that one of General Winfield Scott's daughters married an Oglesby. I found a bird in the Texas birding book today named after him ?Scott?s Oriole?. This prompted my Internet search today. My father was Howard Scott Oglesby. His family was from Pennsylvania and we lived in Jacksonville,FL. Has anyone ever come across the Oglesby name?

(NOTE: this is to help support the theory that Gustavus is the father of Winfield who was born Dec 1851, showing that Gus and Lucinda were in the same location, living in the same community. Gus is living with his brother next door to her sister. By 1860, he is married to another sister, Mary Elizabeth, and Lucinda is not listed in the census; however Winfield is being cared for by his uncle, Joseph Z.)
