Generation: 1

  1. 1.  George Beets (Bitz) was born in 1740 in Pennsylvania; died in 1809 in Hawkins Co, Tennessee.

    Notes:

The original spelling of this surname name was Bitz. His signature on a land deed shown at right is spelled Bitz. This is a German name pronounced Beets. George Bitz (also spelled Bitts) and other Bitz families lived and owned land in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. The connection to the Bitz/Bitts family was confirmed in 2009 through DNA testing. The spelling changed to Beats then to Beets because that is the way it sounded to those taking the census or taking a name for a deed.

George was probably born in Pennsylvania. His father Wilhelm (William) signed a document in 1728 in Pennsylvania and George was born around 1740, so we are assuming George was born in Pennsylvania. George is on the Northampton County tax lists from 1760 to 1783. George married Maria Eva Meister, daughter of Adam Meister, around 1767, probably in Northampton County, PA. Their children Anna Magdalena, Peter, George, Adam, Anna Margaretha, John, Joseph and Daniel were born here. They were christened in various Lutheran churched in the county.

George also served in the Revolutionary War in the Northamtpon County Militia from 1778 (when he signed the Oath of Allegiance in Northampton County) to 1782. He served in the 4th and 3rd Batallions, 8th and 1st companies, 5th class. There were 8 classes. Each class was called up at different times to serve. This allowed them to work their farms and support their families during the war.

George and family left Northampton County, Pennsylvania around 1784 and bought land in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. In 1792 they sold this land and bought 150 acres in Rockbridge County, Virginia. In 1795 George sold this 150 acres to Thomas Reed (see copy of deed to the right in this memorial). George and most of the family moved to Hawkins County, Tennessee where he purchased 150 acres in 1798. Peter moved to Highland County, Ohio and John stayed in Rockbridge Co., Va. Adam owned land in Adair County, Kentucky and died there in 1815, but his wife the former Ann Rowlinson moved back to Rockbridge County, Virginia. George, Sr presumably died in Hawkins County, Tennessee in 1807 or so after selling his land to George, Jr. His wife, Maria Eva, called Eve, probably died in Hawkins Co. too.

Bitz/Beats/Beets History by Diane Beets Moore

Joseph Beets, Sr. was born around 1782 in Pennsylvania. His parents were George (abt. 1740- abt. 1807)and Maria Eva Bitz. Bitz is a German name pronounced Beets. George Bitz (also spelled Bitts) and other Bitz families lived and owned land in Northampton County, Pennsylvania from abt 1760 to 1784. Their children Annaa, Peter, George, Adam, Anna Margaretha, John,, Joseph and Daniel were born here. The connection to the Bitz family was confirmed in 2009 through DNA testing. The spelling changed to Beats then to Beets because that is the way it sounded to those taking the census or taking a name for a deed.

George and family left Northampton County, Pennsylvania around 1784 and moved to Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. In 1792 they sold this land and moved to Rockbridge County, Virginia. In 1798 George (including Joseph Sr) and most of the family moved to Hawkins County, Tennessee. George presumably died there in 1807 or so after selling his land to George, Jr. Joseph Beets, Sr is next seen with his son Joseph Beets, Jr in the 1841 tax list for Grainger County, Tennesee. This is the county next to Hawkins.

Family history says Joseph Sr and Jr and Jesse Green McDaniel and wife Anna Beets McDaniel and others polled a flat boat from the Tennessee River to the Ohio, to the Missisippi to the Missouri and ended up in Cass County Missouri near Independence around 1841. The families of Joseph Beets, Sr and Joseph Beets, Jr are seen in the Cass County, Missouri 1850 census. Joseph Sr is 69 and Joseph Jr is 30. In 1855 Joseph Beets bought land in the newly opened Kansas in Miami County (then called Lykins County). They were some of the first white settlers in Kansas. Joseph Beets, Sr and Jr are listed in the 1860 census of Marysville township, Miami County (then called Lykins). Joseph Sr is 78.

Joseph Sr is in the 1865 Miami Co census where he is 83 years old. He died sometime that year. The name of his wife is unknown.

    "Incorrect Beets Information

    Cjenkins1972 added this on 21 January 2011 to ancestery.com

We are trying to reach as many people with family trees on Ancestry.com to help clarify some of the mis-information that is floating around the internet regarding the Beets family.

1st - George Beats/Bitz Sr.?s wife?s name was Maria Eva ?Eve?. Her maiden name is unknown. It is not Williams.

2nd - It is not known when Eve died. There are posting that have her death as 1836. There is no proof of when she died.

3rd - George and Eve did have 2 daughter?s but they were not Catherine or Emeline. There is a Family Ancestry CD that has this mis-information on it. This CD has been in circulation since the late 1990's.

4th - Peter Beets, son of George and Eve did not died in His, Haute-Garonne, Midi-Pyrenees, France, but died in Highland Co. Ohio.

5th - Joseph Beets son of Peter Beets did not die in Samoa, America in 1866. He was still alive in 1870 living in an asylum for the insane in Montgomery Co. Ohio.

6th - Joseph Beets Sr.?s wife?s name is unknown and Joseph?s name is not Thomas Joseph Beets. There are posting that have Joseph?s wife?s name as Elizabeth Williams. The confusion came from the research of Don E. Beets that has the following statement - According to research of Janet Eileen Beets Dugger, descendant of George Washington Beets E-1, Joseph Beets Sr. first name was Thomas and his wife's name was Elizabeth Williams. (There was a Thomas Beets that was married to an Elizabeth Williams, but this Thomas Beets was the grandson of Joseph Beets Sr.)

    Thank you,

    Cindy and Diane Beets Moore"
