In the name of God amen I John HOWARD being sick & weak of body but of sound and perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto god herefore do make and ordain this my last will & testament in manner & humbly and first I give and command my soul into the hands of God that gave it hoping, this the merits and inserusion of Christ Jesus my God & Savior for afield and free jurisdiction of all rights and my body to be buried in the Earth in advent manner at the direction of my Executrix hereafter named and as to what world by Estate it hath pleased God to bless me with all I give & bequeath the same in manner & form following.
Item. I give and bequeath to my loving son Thomas HOWARD all that motey of piece of land to me belonging called "Partners Purchase" lying on Potomac River inCharles County to be to him & his heirs forever but in case he dies without heirs thy will is that the said tract of land shall them forward be and belong to my son Baker HOWARD to him and his heirs forever.
Item. I give & bequeath to my loving son John HOWARD all that tract of land on which I now live being part of a tract of land called the "Three Brothers" to be to him & his heirs but in case he dies without heirs then my will is that the saract of land from thence forward shall be and belong to my son Baker HOWARD and to his heirs forever.
Item. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Eleanor DOUGLAS wife of John DOUGLAS one mulatto girl named Patience with all her increase during the term of the natural life of my said daughter Eleanor and after her decease I will that the saidtto with all her increase shall be and belong to my grandson John DOUGLAS which said bequest to my said daughter Eleanor I design as above exclude her from claiming any other part or share of my estate.
Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Baker HOWARD one negro boy named James over and above his share of my personal estate.
Item. I give to my daughter Jane one negro girl called Penelope over and above her share of my personal estate.
Item. My will it that my son Baker be kept to school from the age of six years until he arrive to the age of fourteen years and then to be bound apprentice either to the sea or some handy craft or trade as he likes best.
Item. My will is that my negro wench called Little Nell in some reasonable time after my decease be sold by my executrix in order to discharge such debts as I owe in sterling money and after my debts & funeral charges are paid and dischargy my executrix her after named the remainder of my estate goods & chattels not before given I have and bequeathed unto my wife & children to be divided amongst them as the law decrees.
Item. I do hereby constitute ordain & appoint my loving wife Rebecca HOWARD whole and sole executrix of this my last will & testament and I do here by disanounce and make void all former wills & testaments by me made hereby appointing & confng this to be my last will & testament in write of where of I have hereunto set my hand and seal this second day of February in the year of our lord Christ one Thousand Seven hundred & forty two.

Edmund Howard, of Charles County, Cornelius Howard of Baltimore County and Mathew Howard of Anne Arundel County all in some manner can claim descent from the family ranking next to the Royal House of England, but how they fit in is a puzzle yet to be solved -- all three were conscious of their armorial rights and used the trappings in Maryland after they emigrated from their native England."

I Edmund HOWARD of Charles County in the providence of Maryland gent. being now in health and of sound and perfect memory, Blessed by almighty God for the same but considering its hath and uncertainty of this transitory mortal life l flesh must yield when God by deal is plain to hold donate publish and declare this to be my last will and testament hereby multiplying and mastering vow all former & other wills by me testify made and or give and bequeath as followth viz. Imprimes I give and bequeath my soul to almighty God my merciful Creator hoping for full pardon and compassion of my sins through the precious blood and intercession of my beloved savior and redeemer Jesus Christ my body commit to the earth to be decently buried as to my Executors hereafter named shall seem neat and convent and as for natural worldly estate it shall please almighty God to bestow upon me after my just debts personal charges being first paid I give & bequeath as followth Viz.
Item. I give bequeath and confirm unto my well beloved eldest son Wm. Stevens HOWARD one hundred acres of land where upon he now lives to have & to hold the same during his natural life and after his decease to his heirs lawfully beo be begotten and for default of such heirs then I give the same unto my dear only daughter Elizabeth HOWARD of the heirs of her body lawfully to be begotten and for default of such heirs then I give the same to my son John HOWARD and to his heirs forever. I also give and bequeath to my said well beloved son Wm. Stevens HOWARD and his heirs or assignees one negro lad named Peter already in his possession also one mulatto man and woman named Scipio and Florence also one mulatto girl named Bess, one gold seal ring & my silver headed cane.
Item. I give and bequeath to my well beloved son Thomas HOWARD the plantation I now live on together with the supplement or addition where on my negro Sambo lives to be divided by a line and to contain as near as can be one hundred anes both tracts I give the same to the sd Thomas HOWARD and to his lineal lawful heirs begotten of his body and for default of such then I give the same to my youngest son George HOWARD and his heirs forever also give and bequeath to said second son Thomas my negro Sambo and Grace his wife and Patience my negro woman also the best feather bed and furniture. Viz. bead, bolsters, pillows, rug, blanket, curtains, and wallings which I shall die possessed with.
Item. I give and bequeath unto my well beloved third son John HOWARD one hundred acres of land laid out by Mr. Joseph MANNING Surveyor and joining upon the land where on my eldest son now lives according to the bound meet. There of I gme unto my said son John HOWARD and to the lawful heirs of his body and for default of such heirs then I give the same to my eldest son Wm. Stevens HOWARD and his heirs forever also I give and bequeath unto my said John HOWARD my second best feather bed and furniture as before excepted in my legacy to my son Thomas, I likewise give and bequeath to my said son John HOWARD one negro man named George and one negro girl called Kate the said land negroes & beds to be delivered him when he shall arrive to one and twenty years of age and not sooner.
Item. I give and bequeath unto my dear and well beloved daughter Elizabeth HOWARD what part of a parcel of land called "Saturdays Worke" shall appear to be my just right the whole is said to be one hundred and fifty acres tract of it o land by me given to my eldest son where he now lives I give the same to my said Daughter Elizabeth and to her lawful issue borne of her body and for default of such issue then I give the same to my youngest son George HOWARD and to his lineal lawful heirs forever I do also give and bequeath unto my said daughter Elizabeth one negro girl named Nan formerly made over by deed of gift and ensettled in Charles County Records one negro boy named Jack one mulatto boy named Benjamin one large silver tankard six silver spoons a feather bed & furniture now in her possession a seal skin trunk with her name in letters at length with her own & mothers Cloths therein as also a Diaper Table cloth and twelve Diaper napkins my Great Bible & warming pan and a chamber looking glass it comes in neat shipping.
Item. I do also give and bequeath to my said dear & well beloved daughter Elizabeth HOWARD the sum of twenty pounds sterling to be paid her in good bills of Exchange at her arrival to sixteen years of age or marriage which shall firr in the lieu there of to be paid in tobacco at one penny a pound to the convince of my Executor hereafter named the said twenty pounds sterling or the value there of in Tobacco as aforesaid to be raised out of the sale of my land in Somerset County which I hereby order my Executors to sell and dispose of for the use of aforesaid & the remainder of the money or tobacco if the said land shall be sold for I do give and bequeath to my three sons Thomas, John, & George HOWARD to be equally divided amongst them it is also my will and desire that my said Daughter shall not receive her portion until her arrival to sixteen years of age or marriage which shall first happen.
Item I give & bequeath to my well beloved youngest son George HOWARD the remaining part of my land not already given and bequeathed and lying in the middle of his three brothers aforementioned I give the same to the said George HOWARD awful issue as aforementioned and for default of such heirs then I give the same to my second son Thomas HOWARD & his heirs for ever. I also give to my said son George HOWARD one negro lad named Dick one negro girl named Ellinor and one mulatto girl named Alice also one feather bed and furniture as aforementioned to my other children to be delivered to my said son George HOWARD at his arrival to twenty one years of age.
Item. (so far wrote after I was taken sick) I give and bequeath unto my four sons & daughter and my little Grand Daughter Margaret one silver spoon it being marked with MH and one gold ring to each of them it being a legacy left eachy their late dear & tender mother and grandmother.
Item. I give and bequeath to my little GrandDaughter Margarett HOWARD one cow and calf besides a black two year old heifer to have & to hold the said cow & calf & heifer & their female increase until twelve years and after that time te whole increase both male and female I all so give said Grand Daughter my mourning ring in memory of my late dear Brother Mr George DENT.
Item. I give and bequeath unto my dear and well beloved brother Mr. Richard EYTON merchant in London and to his wife and all so to my dear and only sister Mrs. Hester TINSDALE wife to Mr. Athetstone TINDALE upholster in Bristol & tod I give to each of them twenty shillings sterling to buy each of them a mourning ring if they be in the land of the living at the time of my decease.
Item. I give and bequeath unto the Reverend Minister whose toll it shall be to present my funeral sermon five hundred pounds of tobacco for his labors there in and I also desire that the text my be taken out of the thirty fourth psalm terse.
Item. I give & bequeath all the remaining part of my estate of what sort so ever and where so ever it shall or may be found not already given & bequeathed I give the same to be equally divided amongst my four, son's and my little Daugy each a share alike and if it should happen that either of my son's or my Daughters husband (if married) should play the prodigal or extravagant (which God of his infinite mercy forbid) if it should so happen my will & pleasure & also my humble request & desire is that two Gent. members of Charles County court be empowered appointed to enter upon the Tract or parcel of land by me given to such extravagant child as aforesaid & be assess and let aprell there on to gather with natural negroes shall be left & what other part of estate shall be left belonging to such Prodegate and award of the said two gent. to be final & after it is applied some one of my sons to have the referral to the said land & premises he paying so far fourth as the price assessed of time of payment given my said son for payment of the same for it is my expressed will & desire that none of my land doe pass out of the name of the Howards while there is a male surviving.
Lastly I do nominate constitute and appoint my two eldest and dear & well beloved sons William Stevens & Thomas HOWARD to be jointly the executors of all of this my Last will and Testament and to do & perform all & every article thereined as all so my further will and desire to them expressed in words & upon the desires & condition of a dying parent I do will require & strictly charge & command all my dear children to hear God and to live in all brotherly & sisterly love to each other as they will answer the failure there of before the Great Tribunals at the general judgment day and that this is my last will testament hereby revoking all former & other wills testaments by me heretofore made done in witness there of I have sit & affixed my hand and seal the third day of December in the eighth year of the reign of our sovereign Lady Queen Anne over England Viz. For whereas hath almighty God since the writing of my above mentioned last will and testament to add to my estate one negro boy more commonly called & known by the name of Black Will as a further addition to my son Thomas HOWARDS portion, I ive & bequeath the said negro boy to the said Thomas HOWARD and his heirs & upon such conditions and terms as hereafter expected viz: If it should please God that my negro woman Patience should at any time after my decease bring forth and bare of female child shall be at age convent to wean by a good & firm deed of gift duly to be enrolled in Charles County records shall make over and confirm the sd. female negro child to my grand son Edmund HOWARD the son of my eldest son William Stevens HOWARD & Elizabeth his wife the whole property of the said female negro with all her future increase to rest years & until the said Edmund HOWARD shall arrive to the age of one & twenty years at the meres of the said female negro to be equally divided between him & his sister Margarett HOWARD the possession of the said negro child, when fit to be weaned to be delivered into the custody of the said William HOWARD for the use and benefit of his children aforesaid when they shall arrive to their several and respective ages and if it shall come to their respective ages then it is my will and desire that my daughter Elizabeth mother of the said children if then living shall have the possession of the said negro & her increase if any there be and for the use aforesaid for and during such time as we shall remain a widow or longer provided it be with the advice nonserve of her Elizabeth that might prove unknown either to her will or my dear grand children as aforesaid then it is my express will & desire that my son Thomas & John HOWARD or one of them doe require & take in to either of their possessions the said female negro & her increase (if any there be) and keep them for the use aforesaid until my said grandchildren shall arrive to their several and respective ages and if it should happen to either of my said grand children should die before they arrive to their respective ages or without issue lawfully begotten or borne of either of their bodies then I give the said female negro & all her increase as aforesaid to the survivor and if it should please God that both of my grand children as aforesaid should dye as aforesaid (which God for bid then it is my will & desire that the said negro to be disposed of such child or children or shall here after be lawfully begotten by the said Wm. Stevens HOWARD and as he in his Discretion shall think fit and not to return to any other of my heirs upon any pretense what so ever and if after my desire that birth of said female negro child as aforesaid my son Thomas should either neglect or refuse to perform the part of my will undo revoke & make over this part of my bequests & bequeath to him and do hereby order & give power to my son William to take possession of the said negro boy more & sell him or exchange him for a female e negro child for the use and benefit of his children as aforesaid this codicil I do ordain and annex to my last will & testament before mentioned and it is my will & pleasure that it be deemed taken & construed to be as full firm & valid in the law to all intents & purpose what so ever & in any other warrant or paragraph in my said last will and testament.

The deposition of Terrence Bryan, age about 64, who declares that about 20 years ago, Mr Edmd Howard Sr showed a tree fallen down and rotten, on a stony knoll on the south side of a branch, and put his cane thereon and told him it was a gum and was the beginning tree of his land and that he intended to put a locust post in the place thereof, which knoll is now shown by this deponent. Also, this deponent further says that he lived upon the plantation and land about 7 years.

Research Notes:
Be advised that parental relationship is nothing more than semi-educated guessing. Researchers have been trying to draw conclusions of Edmund's parents and his relationship to William Stevens forever. This is only an exercise in exploring possibilities with both known facts and then conjecture in an attempt to at least get the pieces out on the table.

Facts we know:
1. Edmund Howard named his first son after William Stevens.

2. 1678 William Stevens willed 400 acres to Edmund Howard and to his son William Stevens Howard.
(William Stevens had no issue of his own)
(comment: Conflict of dates here because William Stevens Howard was born 3 Nov 1684 - 6 years after the date suggested when the will would have been written.
(it appears some records transposed the date 1687 to 1678. If so, then William Stevens Howard was 3 yrs old ~ss)

3. 3 Oct 1685: John White, in his will, probated 3 Oct 1685, calls William Stevens Howard "my cousin." The relationship is unexplained beyond the reference. (William Stevens Howard would be 11 mos old!)

4. 1691: There was a Benjamin Keizer (or Keyser) of Somerset County (who died in 1691), who in his will names "my father George Keizer," brothers Elizer and John Keizer, sister May Mould and "my cousins [Nieces and Nephews?] Tabitha White, Priscilla White, Sarah White, Stevens White and William White". He also left small legacies to Lawrence Crawford (bro-in-law) and George Layfield (bro-in-law), and refers to land which Col. William Stevens, of "Rehoboth", in his will, also devised property to Edmund Howard and his son William Stevens Howard, not mentioning any relationship. John White m Sarah Keyser.

comment: I really question b.d. of WSH because of these facts. Why would John White refer to a baby cousin in his will??? Why would Benjamin Keizer leave property to a father and a son who would be only 7 years old?

But taking the "known" information and allowing for typos or something to explain date discrepancies, to get the relationships to all fit as described, and a little guesswork on those that aren't documented, about the only way this would work are are two options:
1. I think Edmund might have had a 1st wife before Dent, and that first wife would have been a Keyser daughter. But dates don't exactly add up for that to be logical.
2. Edmund's mother was a sister to George Keyser and aunt to the Keyser children, and their spouses. That would give John White a 1st cousin, once removed relationship.

Well, it ain't all worked out -- and it's doubtful it ever will be. But at least this does have the Keyser and White families somewhat recorded, along with their relationship to William Stevens -- and conjectured relationship to Edmund. As I said, at least some puzzle pieces are laid out for more scrutiny.

Colonel Thomas Brooke, Jr., of Brookefield (1659 ? 1730/1731) was President of the Council in Maryland and acting 13th Proprietary Governor of the Province of Maryland. He was the son of Major Thomas Brooke, Sr. and Esquire, (1632?1676) and his second wife Eleanor Hatton, (1642?1725), who later re-married Col. Henry Darnall, (1645-1711).

In 1720, he was elected President of the Governor's Council, (upper house of the colonial Maryland General Assembly)[1] and acting (12th), Governor of Maryland from the departure of 11th Gov. John Hart until the arrival of Charles Calvert, fifth Lord Baltimore, (1699-1751). Brooke, jr. was replaced as the 14th governor by Captain Charles Calvert, (1638-1754), cousin of the Lord Baltimore, and a Calvert family loyalist

Thomas was one of the Justices for Calvert County. Thomas was a justice of the peace for Calvert County in 1679-1681; 1685-1689. Thomas was a vestryman of St. Paul?s Parish, Calvert County. He was removed from his justiceship probably due to his opposition to the revolution Protestant Associators in 1689. He was nominated by Charles Calvert (1637?1715), 3rd Lord Baltimore to become a member of the first royal Council, commonly known as the Upper House, on August 26, 1691. He was probably appointed in an effort to mollify the proprietor after his loss of the colony. Thomas served as a member of the Council of Maryland from 1692-1707. He took the oath of office as a justice of the Provincial Court on May 1, 1694. He was appointed Deputy Secretary of Maryland the following year, and in 1699 was Commissary General of the Province.

Thomas was dismissed from all offices by the Governor of Maryland, John Seymour, (1649?1709), in 1708 as a result of close Roman Catholic ties - his brothers were Jesuits and Col. Henry Darnall (1645?1711) was his stepfather-and for poor Council attendance, although his attendance had been very regular prior to Seymour?s governorship. Brooke was reappointed to the same position after the colony reverted to proprietary control, and served from 1715-1722.

Governor of Maryland[edit]

In 1720 he was elected President of the Council,[1] and acting Governor of Maryland from the departure of Gov. John Hart until the arrival of Charles Calvert, 5th Baron Baltimore. He was replaced as governor by Captain Charles Calvert, cousin of Lord Baltimore, and a Calvert family loyalist.[2]

The reason for his second dismissal from the Council in 1722, is unclear. Unlike his parents and brothers, he was a member of the Church of England and reared his family in that faith. He was one of the first vestryman of St. Paul's Parish.

Thomas resided at "Brookefield", his estate on Mattaponi Creek near the Patuxent River, which he inherited from his father. The land was formerly in Calvert County, but became Prince George's County when it was formed. In addition to "Brookefield", Col. Brooke also laid out several other tracts of land in Calvert County including: "The Gore", laid out on June 10, 1680; "Brookes Chance", on July 13, 1680; "Addition to Brooke Chance", on June 10, 1685; "Hogg Pen", on June 12, 1685; "Addition to Brookefield", on March 29, 1688; "The Grove Landing", on July 10, 1688; "The Forrest", on Sep. 5, 1694; "Dan" on September 6, 1694; "Brookes Discovery", on Dec. 10, 1695; and "The Prospect", on Dec. 11, 1695. At the time of his death on January 7, 1730 at ?Brookefield?, Thomas had amassed over 7,000 acres (28 km²) of land, in which a majority was heavily mortgaged. His estate value was listed at 1,374 pounds, including proceeds of the sale of land, and 36 slaves.

In about 1680 he married Anne Addison. He had by her four children,[3] and she died in about 1684.

Thomas married as his second wife, Barbara Dent (1676?1754). Barbara was born in 1676 in St. Mary?s Co., Maryland, and died June 26, 1754 in Calvert Co., Maryland.

Barbara Dent was born 1676, after her father's death, and is therefore not named in his will, but her mother conveys land to trustees for her benefit, 20 Nov 1676, and the deed is confirmed, 6 Jun 1704, by Barbara's mother and the latter's second husband, Col. John Addison (Charles Co. Lib. 21, fol. 116, 121). In the deed of confirmation it is recited that Barbara "is now married to the Hon Thomas Brooke, Esq." The marriage too, place before 4 Jan 1699, when Col. Thomas Brooke and Barbara, his wife, executed a deed together. The will of Col. Thomas Brooke is dated 30 Nov 730 and wa sproved 25 Jan 1730/1. His wife Barbara survived him, and died in 1754. Her will, dated 24, Feb 1748/9 was proved 26 Jun 1754. Several of Brooke's children are not mentioned in his will, but were provided for by deeds executed in their father's life time.

The Dent Family
Perhaps no family of Southern Maryland is better known than the Dent Family, which in the formative years of the Province produced some of the most prominent and outstanding colonial subjects of Lord Baltimore and the Crown. They were conss for thier public services, and high military offices.
Thomas Dent, Gentleman (1630-1676)
Thomas Dent was born about 1630 in the Parish of Guisbough, Yorkshire, England, making him less than 30 years old when he arrived in America. Not long afterwards he married Rebecca Wilkinson, the Virginia born daughter of Rev. William Wiln, and his wife Naomi. He arrived in Maryland in 1658. In 1659 he was Justice of St. Mary's Court, St. Mary's Co, Maryland. And on March 26, 1663, Thomas Dent, Gent. entered his rights for transporting John Dent, John Winnie, Constant Stephensen, George Athley, John Venable and himself to be layed out for him by September 30, 1663. In 1664 he was High Sheriff St. Mary's County, Maryland. He was also delegate for St. Mary's County, Maryland.
On May 26, 1673 he applied at the land office in St. Mary's City for additional 600 acres for transporting Jerman Shyn, John Moderman, John Akers, John James, William Rutter, Charles Wheeler, Edward Crouch, Mary Evans, Sarah Caes, Ann Flethn, Elizabeth Danset, and John Dent into the Province to inhabit.
Thomas Dent's English background seems to have been from a market town on River Dee in West Riding of Yorkshire, called Dent, and the family derived its name from this town. About 1318 Willielmus filius de Dent deeded land in the village otheny for use of Knights Templars, which revereted back to the Dent family - and according to Historical and Archaeological Journal of Yorkshire in 1889 was still held by descendants. A list of freeman records of Yorkshire in 1365 records is name of Willielmus de Dente, parchemener.
The fact that Judge Thomas Dent came from Gisborough in Yorkshire is authenticated by his land patents given the name of "Guisborough", it being characteristic of the Maryland gentry to name their plantations after ancestral estate in old Ed. "Gisbourough" is a town and parish situated in North Riding - about six miles northwest of Ormsby, the more ancient estates of the forebearers of Thomas Dent. His parentage has been proven by Peter Dent, naturalist and professor of Cambridge University, and is in the Hereld's College, London under Cambridgeshire pedigrees, in 1684.
Thomas Dent established residence in St. Mary's County where most of his children were born and spent their childhood. He was the first alderman of St. Mary's City and a acre of land was patented to honor him called "The Lawyer's Lodginge was also engaged in mercantile pursuits as well as cultivation of the soil. Thomas Dent lived in Aldermansbury Street (now extinct) and his next door neighbor was Governor Thomas Notley.
On September 4, 1663, Thomas Dent was issued a warrant for 850 acres patented under the name of "Gisborough" lying on the east side of the Anacostia River, a branch of the river called Eastern Branch in Charles County standing by a little blled Gisborough Bay.
In March 20, 1671 a warrant from the Secretary office ordered a tract of land called "Brothers Joint Interest" layed out in Charles Co. in woods above Piscataway, for William Hatton and Thomas Dent.
Thomas Dent was appointed High Sheriff of St. Mary's and Deputy Surveyor in 1664 and in August 19, 1668 - as a Gentleman of Quorum, he was appointed Commissioner of Peace and represented the County of St. Mary's at the General Assembly in 1674-1675 and perhaps other years. He was engaged with some conflicts with the Indians- and was comissioned to secure 28 barrels of corn and 4,000 weight of meat for the Colonial forces in the Indian campaign against the Susquehanna Indians.

Received several large land grants from Lord Baltimore in parts of what is now Virginia and Maryland, including the land opposite the city of Washington, across the eastern branch of the Potomac [known as Gisboro Point after Thomas' home tosborogh, England on the river Tees]. Thomas built his house, "Westbury" manor, near the current town of Dentsville, Maryland, and old Fort Tobacco.

Sometime after Thomas Dent died in 1646 she remarried Capt John Addison in 1646. He held rank of Colonel, Judge of the Provincial Court and Privy Councillor and died in England. They had a son, Thomas Addison.
