    Frederick Co Virginia General Index to Deed (1743-1867)
    Book 11-Pg 202 Indenture on the 6th day of October in the year of our lord 1766 between John Madden, son and heir at law of John Madden, deceased of the county of Frederick & Colony of Virginia on the one part of MayCra [sic] Madden of the same place on the other part. Sold for 5 shillings, 400 acres granted by deed of the proprieter of the northern neck to John Madden, deceased on the 2nd of April 1751. Land is described as near Joe's Hole, about 10 poles along the Fairfax Road.

    Frederick Co. VA Deed Book #11, pp 202-204, Oct 7, 1766 - John Madden Jr.  (and Susannah, his wife) sells 400 acres to Mabra Madden for 100 pounds.

    John MADDEN Jr. On 9 November 1770, John and Susannah Madden sold to John NEVILL 194 acres of land which had been granted to John Madden as son and heir at law to John Madden, late of the County of Frederick, deceased. This tract was part of te tract granted to John Madden I, from Lord Fairfax. On July 1768 John Madden (2nd) made a deed giving power-of-attorney to JOHN MOFFETT of Fauquier County, Virginia, "whereas John Madden is seized of a tract of land lying in Prince William County, Virginia, 173 acres being part of a tract of 673 acres granted to LEONARD HELM the 15th day of January 1760......."

    Mabary Madden and wife Jane; Loughland Madden and Ann, and John Madden of Frederick County, Va., to Robert Rutherford 100 acres between Shenandoah River Opeckon Creek, part of grant to John Madden, decd - Mabra Madden John Madden heirs at law of John Madden, Decd.

    (Note: There was a Richard Evans married to Rebecca Drake (from N.J.) Rebecca Drake g/d of Elizabeth Bonham (m John Drake) dau of Nicholas Bonham and Hannah Fuller!)

    The names JOHN and MABRA MADDEN appear in the Laurens County, South Carolina, records along with other Helm (Hellum) and Hudgens family members where a Mabra Madden married Mary and his brother Abraham Madden married Jane, daughter of Colonelstings Dial and his wife Rebecca Abercombrie. Hastings Dial was the son of Captain Henry Arthur DIAL and Isabella Hastings. Their brother William Madden married Sara PINSON. Their father was JOHN MADDEN whose will was proved in 1795 in Laurens County, South Carolina.

    Laurens County Estate Book A-1: Will of John MADDEN of Laurens County, free holder, being sick...to wife Susannah Madden, while she remains a widow, all my effects; but if any of her sons marry which is now unmarried, I desire she may give tm such necessaries as follows: one feather bed & furniture, two cows & calves to each of them when married; to my son CHARLES MADDEN, the negroe fellow named Jim & to my son ABRAHAM MADDEN, negroe wench named Suse; to son WILLIAM MADDEN, tract of 150 acres on so. side of what we call Burrs' branch; to son JOHN MADDEN, tract of land, houses, etc. where I now dwell, 152 acres; if MAHA [MABRA] MADDEN should be disappointed & now get the land which my son DAVID and I bought, lying over Reedy River, he is to have an equal share with Charles & the rest...wife Susannah and son GEORGE, exrs...28 August 1795; Wit: Richard Pugh, Ann Madden.

    The Maddens were tories: they appear to have served for a time with Bloody Bill Cunningham, along with ISAAC DIAL, JAMES SIMS, and WILLIAM HELMS. [History of Newberry County, SC]
