    Notes:

I can tell you that John was Sr. was born in Henrico county VA about 1700. He is the son of the immigrant Bartholomew and Ann Burton Stovall. It is thought that he and Dorcas married sometime around 1733. He and his brother Bartholomew Jr. both had 200 acres in Goochland county Va. John got another 400 on Deep Creek. In 1734 he sold 100 to 400 acres and his wife Dorcas signed her dower rights. Their first son, Bartholomew is believed to have been born in 1733. He is later found in Lunenburg county Va where he paid tithes in 1748-50.
In 1750 he moved from VA to NC where he bought land on Grassy creek in Granville NC. He and two sons John jr. and Bartholomew were part of the militia in 1754. John made his will 29 July 1781 in which he named his wife and children heirs. The will was probated in the November Court of that year. Dorcas died after 1781 in Granville county NC. This will can be found in Granville county N.C. Deed Book I, pp. 313-314.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Education: 1684, Henrico Co, Virginia

    Notes:

One Stovall researcher and author has remarked : ".....Bartholome's indenture arrangement indicated he was a very promising young man or he had enough money to pay part of his passage, for a four-year indenture period was quite short....".

It is believed Bartholomew continued to maintain Quaker associations when he lived in Virginia. Stephen Hughes, a known Quaker of the time, witnessed Bartholomew's Will. Third Generation Stovalls also had ties to the Society of Friends..

By August 8, 1693, Bartholomew's endeavors and enterprise had improved his status enough to allow him to take a bride, Anne Burton, a daughter of the late Thomas Burton and his wife Susannah. Susannah, then married to John Stewart, was the surety for Anne's marriage..

The young couple, by 1704, had accumulated some properties of their own, in addition to Anne's part of the estate of her father. In 1715 they received a land patent for large acreage on the south side of the James River between Deep Creek and Solomon's Creek, in Henrico county, Virginia, (now Powhatan county). .

On May 1, 1721, the Will of Bartholomew Stovall was probated in Henrico county. In addition to Stephen Hughes, the Will made on January 14, 1718, was witnessed by Ezekell Sulberry and Ashford Hughes..

    Bartholomew's widow, Anne, married John Saunders before October 1725;
she died circa October 1736. John Saunders purchased many of the parcels of land left by Bartholomew to his children..

Bartholomew and Anne Burton Stovall were the parents of seven children:....
George Stovall (Sr); William Stovall ; Thomas Stovall ; Hannah Stovall ; BARTHOLOMEW STOVALL, JR. ; John Stovall (Sr) ; and Margaret Stovall..

Bartholomew got a marriage license August 6, 1693 and married Ann Burton two days later at
St. John's Church (Episcopal). This church, located near the town of Curle, Virginia is gone, however, some original items may be at the new church, 2401 E. Broad Street, Richmond, Virginia. .

They lived on 318 acres next to Deep Creek and the James River in what is now Powhatan County, Virginia. This land is owned by the Catholic Church and was the site of a school, St. Emma's Academy, which is now unoccupied and condemned. A family reunion was held here in 1984. The picture was taken in the early 1990's from the main gate. The river is on the opposite side of the building seen here. Additional photos include a aerial image showing the land and river. .

Ann Burton was born around 1670 to Thomas Burton and Susannah Hatcher on the former "Cobbs" plantation on the Appomattox River. Thomas and Susannah had five children; Ann was the youngest. The other children included: Thomas Burton, born in 1663/64; John Burton, born in 1666; Isaac Burton, born in 1667/68; and Abraham Burton, born in 1669. .

This is the Indenture document that Bartholomew signed to obtain passage aboard the ship BOOTH to the New World.

Bartholomew was a Husbandman, until his death (about 1721) in Powhatan County, VA. He left a Will dated January 14, 1718/19 probated on May 1, 1721. The witnesses were Ezekile Sudbury, Ashford Hughes and Stephen Hughes (who was a Quaker). The Will is on file but seriously deteriorated in the Virginia St. Library, Henrico Co. Misc. Court Records, Vol. 3, page 543. The Will mentions his wife Ann, sons; George, William and Thomas and daughter named Hannah. .

His other two sons; John and Bartholomew, Jr. were listed in several land deeds. In 1725, Ann Burton Stovall married a widower named John Saunders and she died before October 2, 1736. .

The Children of Bartholomew and Ann include:

George; born circa 1695 in Henrico County, Virginia and died 1786 in Campbell Co., VA. He married (A) Elizabeth (?) and B) Elisabeth (Landon?).
William; born circa 1697 in Virginia, died in 1736 in Goochland Co., Va. He married Judith (Twitty?).
Hannah; born circa 1699 in Virginia and died after 1773 there. Married John Learwood of Goochland County.
