    Hugh emigrated to America from Wales landing at Annapolis, Maryland, and later settling in St. Thomas Parish, Orange County, Virginia in 1747. Hugh first married Elizabeth Morton ca. 1743. They were the parents of eight children. Elizabeth died ca. 1785 and Hugh married Catey (surname unknown) ca. 1787. Hugh died 24 October 1791 in Orange Co., Virginia. Some of his descendants spread to Ohio (son Catlett), Coffee County, Tennessee (son Morton), Wilkes County, North Carolina (sons George and Benjamin and daughter Frances), and along a line from Wilkes County, Georgia (son Hugh) to Bibb County, Alabama (grandson Joseph White Jones) and to the border between Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas.

    In the name of God amen I, Hugh Jones, of Orange Co., being through the mercy and goodness of the Almighty, tho weak in body yet of a sound and perfect understanding and memory do constitute and order this my last will and testament......

    Item - I give to my beloved son George Jones one shlling sterling

    Item - I give to my beloved son Hugh Jones one shilling sterling.

    Item - I give to my beloved son Morton Jones one shilling sterling.

    Item - I give to my beloved daughter Frances Foster one shilling sterling.

    Item - and after her death or marriage my whole estate is to return to my beloved son Catlett Jones with all the improvements to him and his forever except fifty acres of the land I now live on and the said fifty acres to be equal value to any fifty acres in the tract, this said land and its value to be paid by my son Catlett Jones to my grandson Joseph Jones, son of Elizabeth Jones and if he should die without lawful heir, the above mentioned fifty acres of land or its value to return to my son Catlett Jones or his heirs.

    Item - I constitute and appoint my beloved son Catlett Jones and my friend William Morton my Executors of this my last will and testament revoking all wills heretofore by me made and ratifying and confirming this to be my only will. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty-fifth day of October, one thousand seven hundred and eighty eight.

    At a court held for Orange Co., on Monrday, the 24th of Oct. 1791 this last will and testament of Hugh Jones decd was presented into court by Catlett Jones and William Morton, exrs. therein named and proved by the oaths of Urial Mallory and William Mallory, two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded and on the motion of the said exrs. who made oath according to ... certificate is granted them for obtaining probate thereof in due form whereupon they with Urial Mallory, their securities entered into and acknowledged their bond for the same in the sum of 500 pounds.
