    THOMAS WITHERS COFFER, born 1713, and a Vestryman of Truro from 1765 to his death, in 178I, was a son of Francis Coffer, (born 1683, died I740) and Mary Littlejohn Withers, his wife. His seat was at or near the present residence of M. D. Hall, Esq., whose wife is one of his descendants; so he was one of the "upper" Vestrymen, being a neighbor, as neighbors were accounted then, of Capt. Payne, Mr. Gardner, Mr. Ford and Mr. Ellzey. His wife was Mary Farguson, who was born in 1715 and died in 1758. Their son Francis Coffer was born in 1748, and was a Vestryman from 1776 to 1785. He married a Miss Gunnell. Thomas Coffer, their son, born 1773, was captain of a company from Fairfax in the war of 1812. He married Anne Simpson, and died in 1862, leaving eight children, namely: William Coffer, married Miss Harmed, line extinct; Hannah Coffer, married Silas Burke; Jane Coffer, married Levi Burke; Elizabeth Coffer, married George Selectman; Thomas Coffer, married Jane Selectman; Henry Coffer, married Harriett Taylor; Joshua Coffer, married Hulda Simpson; Armistead Thompson Mason Coffer, died unmarried. The descendants of Hannah, Jane, Henry and Joshua Coffer have restored a pew in Pohick Church in memory of Thomas Withers Coffer.

    Thomas Wither Coffer voted, had accounts at Colchester, and was on the rent rolls for 600 acres 1764-1774. He was a vestryman of Truro Parish 1765-1781. His will, dated 1 January 1781 and admitted to record 16 September 1782, named sons Francis, John and Joshua, daughter Sarah Littlejohn and grandson Thomas Coffer. (Fx. Wills D:260)

    Mary Coffer, in her will recorded 22 February 1741, devised the 378 acre tract to her son Francis. She stated that Francis Coffer, before his death, entered the land and the deed "hath been by and since cleared out of the office and the deed for the said land made out in my said son's name." (Pr.     To Grandson, Josiah Farguson, only son of my oldest son John Farguson, land in King and Queen County, which was bequeathed by my father to be equally divided between my three brothers -- James, Joshua and Joseph -- as tenants for life only and not to them and their heirs forever by which means I became entitled to reversion of the same as eldest son and heir at law of my said father and as two of my brothers have been dead some years and I lived at so great a distance that I never had occasion to make use of the said land I think it proper to mention it thus particularly to show that I never intended to quit or give up my right or claim to the said land having always been of opinion that my father never intended to deprive my heirs of the said land but only to give it to my three brothers during their lives because he was at that time disobliged with me for not settling and living on the said land in his lifetime which he was desirous I should do.
    Item. I do give and bequeath all my Negroes, mulattoes and other estate that I am now possessed of to be equally divided between my son Joshua Farguson and my daughter Mary Coffer only that each of my children Joshua and Mary shall keep the girls which I have already given them to wit: Joshua shall keep Jane Simpson and Mary keep Michol Simpson and the rest to be equally divided between them by my friends William Peake, William Bailey and William Kitchen or any two of them within three months after my decease.
    Lastly, I do constitute and appoint my son Joshua Farguson my sole Executor and revoking all others I do declare this to be my last
    will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 30th day of October 1760.

    At a court held for the County of Fairfax 20 day of January 1761 this will was presented in Court by Joshua Ferguson Executor herein named who made oath thereto and being also proved by the oaths of Charles Green and Robert Lindsay two of the witnesses who also made oath that they saw Mary Willis and Margaret Green the other witnesses subscribe the same is admitted to record and the said Joshua having performed what the law requires a certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.
