| 2244 | 1793 On December 24, 1793 a Bond of Marriage of Dickerson Wood II and Hannah Wither was executed and delivered by John Withers, Hannah's father, to Henry Lee, Esquire, Governor of Virginia. The bond read: Dickerson Wood and Hannah Withers Marriage Bond Know all men by these Presents, That we Dickerson Wood and John Withers are held and firmly bound unto his Excellency Henry Lee, Esq. Governor of Virginia, in the just and full sum of one hundred fifty dollars, current money, to which payment well and truly to be made, to the said Governor or his successors, we bind ourselves, our heirs, executors, and administrators, jointly and severally, firmly by these Presents: Sealed with our seal, and dated this 24 day of December 1793. The condition of the above obligation is such, that, whereas there is a marriage suddenly intended to be solemnized, between the above bound Dickerson Wood and Hannah Withers now if there be no lawful cause to obstruct the said Marriage, then the above obligation to be void and of no effect, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue. Sealed and delivered in presence of (illegible) /s/ Dickerson Wood /s/John Withers Dickerson Wood II joined Darnold, in Culpeper County, Virginia, after Dickerson Wood I died in 1803. William Wood seems to have stayed at the home place in Virginia until joining with others leaving for Kentucky in about 1816. It is not known if any other Wood came to Kentucky. The younger Dickerson Wood later settled in what became Marion County, West Virginia. He died between 1799-1864 in Marion County, West Virginia. There are descendents by his name in the 1880 census. Dickerson Wood, Jr. was the son of Dickerson Wood and Mary. The family lived at Leeds Manor, having property leased to them from Lord Thomas Fairfax. They were to take care of the land and have so many apple trees and so many acres of tenable land, paying a yearly rent of 100 pounds. This is all documented. __________________ http://www.nampoppy.com/Wood.htm Notes for DICKERSON WOOD: Copies from LDS Family History Library: Book US/CAN 975.5275 D2a "Fauquier Families 1759-1799; Comprehensive indexed abstracts of Tax and Tithable Lists, Marriage Bonds and Minute, Deed, and Will Books, and Others" by John P. (Gabriel would have been 7 at the time), a boy and 2 girls ages 10-16; he and his wife were 26-45, and they owned one slave. Sealed and delivered in the presence of O. Gwathmey. Dickerson Wood [Seal] John Withers [Seal] December 24, 1793 Hannah's mother, Elizabeth, consented to the marriage. Fauquier County December 24th 1793. This is to certify that I Elizabeth Withers and Hannah Withers do give free liberty to Dickerson Wood to get ought license to join together the holy estate of matrimony as Witness our hands Elizabeth Withers Hannah Withers. (Volume 1-3 Fauquier County, Virginia Marriage Bonds) Dickinson Wood married Hannah Withers September 3, 1786 in Fauquier County, Virginia; Dickinson Wood married Hannah Withers December 24, 1793 in Fauquier County, Virginia. These two different dates of marriage were reflected on a CD. Obviously one of the entries is in error. There is a 7 year difference between the two marriage dates. Note also that the first name is given as Dickinson rather than Dickerson. However, it is proof beyond a reasonable doubt that Dickinson Wood and Dickerson Wood are one and the same because (1) the marriage to a Hannah Withers is common to them and (2) the marriages occurred in Fauquier County, Virginia. ___________________ From LaRita Couch (laritajim@cyberport.com) She states, "All the sons except Gabriel went to Nakomis, Montgomery Co, Illinois (according to my GGrandmother Fannie Wood Cline.)" | 2252 | 1798 Joseph, associated with Curtis (upon his return to the now U.S. Territory of Mississippi) and William Thompson to constitute a church near Natchez, Mississippi. (Chronology of Joseph Willis Sr.) ------------- Mississippi Missionary As mentioned before, Joseph was a member of Head of Enoree in 1797. Late that year or the next, he made his first trip to Mississippi with Richard Curtis, Jr. This trip was made without his family, as was the custom of the time to venture farther west, find a safe place and then return for the family. Baptist historian, W. E. Paxton records the results of this first trip: "They sought not in vain, for soon after their return they were visited by William Thompson, who preached unto them the Gospel of our God: and on the first Saturday in October, 1798, came William Thompson, Richard Curtis and Joseph Willis, who constituted them into a church, subject to the government of the Cole's Creek church, calling the newly constituted arm of Cole's Creek, ?The Baptist Church on Buffaloe." This church was located near Woodville, Mississippi and the Mississippi River east of Alexandria, Louisiana. Joseph returned for his family by 1799, but it would seem he might have made a trip across the river into Louisiana before this date, since this is where he returned with his family. Curtis had already made one trip to this part of the country in 1780. In that year Richard Curtis, Jr. along with his parents, half-brother and three brothers, and all their wives, together with John Courtney and John Stampley and their wives, set out for Mississippi. Mississippi Baptist historian T. C. Schilling wrote that "two brothers by the name of Daniel and William Ogden and a man by the name of Perkins, with their families, most of whom were Baptists" were also along on this first trip. http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/evangeline/bios/willis.txt | Willis, Rev. (This makes the 3rd documented Martin) 24 Apr. 1773: Inventory of the estate of William Middleton as shown by Martin Middleton, administrator, certified by William (x) Middleton, Jr., Gideon Gibson, Gideon Gibson, Jr. SRC: South Carolina Miscellaneous Records Book 94-B, p. 490. NOTE: William Middleton, Jr. was apparently son of Martin Middleton (the 2nd Martin, deceased's brother), for he could not have appraised his father's estate. William Middleton, SENR and by his decease becomes the property of Martin Middleton his son and by his lw&t (ed: Last will and testimate) becomes the porperty of his son Stephen Middleton. - ref:A103-104, A104-106 & C239 dated 19 Apr 1800. Not sure if this is the right William: In 1816 Martin buys, from several different people, their "right to tract granted to William Middleton called Weavers old field." Not sure if this is the William referenced here (but it seems very likely): In 1773 William Middleton of Marion Co. died. Appraisers of the estate (worth 4000 pounds) on April 24 were William Middleton Jr, Gideon Gibson, and Gideon Gibson Jr. On the same day, Joseph Holland's estate was appraised by Gideon Gibson Jr., Martin Middleton, and William W. Middleton, Jr. The following people owed money to the Middleton estate: Wm. Alston Gideon Gibson Sr., George Gibson, John Berry, Jordan Gibson Sr., Benjamin Blackman, Peter Keighley, Thomas Brewinton, Isaac Nevils, Frederick Jones and Jacob Goings http://www.erikson.us/Ged2Html-I/d0010/g0000006.html | Middleton, William (I41581)

| 2291 | 1802, John signed as security to a land sale of his brother Thomas. note by ss: This transaction is said to be sons of Imm David, but it seems more likely they are sons of David Jr. 1802 land sale: Thomas buying, needed security of brother John. If John b low end of 1781-1790; then just turning 21 and probably needed a security. But John who signed the security, son of Imm Dave, was already in his 40s and appeared to be younger than the thomas mentioned in father's will. Why would baby bro be signing for security? No, the John who signed for Thomas (1781-1790 - and would have to be 1781 - not 1790) - would be another John older bro to Thomas, grandsons Imm Dave. It makes more sense that the John who provided security for baby bro Thomas is John (John of Wythe) son of David Jr.; and Thomas is also son of David Jr. that we didn't have yet. To further validate this theory, John, who married Lydia, gave his year of birth as 1781 in 1850 census. | Doak, John (I52954)

Best guess is he went to Indiana sometime between 1819 and 1821. George was b 1818 in KY, and Matilda m in Indiana in 1822. Son Isaac must have returd to Kentucky for his bride in 1823 as he would have been 12 or 14 at the time of removing to Indiana, unless he stayed back with someone, not going with the family. Son Samuel also married in KY in 1828. Apparently they stayed in Indiana until at least after 1836 when Caroline married. Note: Corydon was Indiana's capital from 1813 to 1825 when it became Indianapolis. Settlers began arriving in Harrison County soon after 1800. Most records such as wills, deeds, and marriages begin in 1809. A few genealogies tell of squatting a few years earlier. Streams were the basis of travel and the first settlers found farms near them. Travelling down the Ohio by raft the settlers poured in from Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Many Southerners came to Indiana to avoid the slavery issues. Most slaves were by maters upon crossing into Indiana. Most of Harrison County's earliest settlers found farms along the forty-mile Ohio River border or the tributaries in the southern half of the county. One of the earliest was the well-known Indian fighter, Squire Boone, brother of Daniel. He sled after 1802 and built a large grist mill on Buck Creek. After death his remains were entered in a small cave nearby where he once escaped marauding Indians. Boone relatives built Old Goshen Church in 1813, which is the oldest in the county, and the oldest Baptist church in Indiana. Boone relatives still live in the area. 1837: Settled in Scott Co, Illinois. 1850 Scott Co, Illinois, Naples Census: p 034A LN HN FN (farmer) 29 580 601 Madden John 80 M Do 800 Virginia 30 580 601 Madden Catharine 71 F Virginia 31 580 601 Jones Stephen 55 M Do Virginia 32 580 601 Jones Emeline 16 F Kentucky 33 580 601 Jones John W. 29 M Do Kentucky 1850: Nov 20 died at age 80 yrs 9 months. I just skimmed - not a heck of a lot there. His son George sued the estate of John for work on the farm since 1840. The executor was Henry Steward, who, apparently was a doctor and was owed quite a bit too. Have signatures of Catharine and John (yes Catharine wrote it with an 'A', so I guess that makes it official. John died intestate. Stephen and John W. Jones are barely mentioned. List of personal property comes to $175 or so, way short of the monies owed. Remains to be seen about Real property - did not see anything on it, assuming that he even owned any. I will copy and send soon - I haven't even developed the pictures yet. John By the way, I would guess that the Henry Steward household might be a good place to look for Catharine after 1850. | Madden, John* (I3193)
