Breckenridge's in Arkansas from about 1842
Posted by: Roger Breckenridge (ID *****7493) Date: December 18, 2005 at 03:15:51

I have a certain amount of information on the descendent's of John and Elizabeth Breckenridge, Scottish background, who emigrated from Ireland to South Carolina. John died before 2 March, 1796. Family records indicates he was killed by a falling tree. They had three sons, Robert (b. 28 Sept, 1792), James (b. 1786) and David (b. 1788). Eventually all three settled in Jackson County, Arkansas.

I have the records of their descendent's if anyone needs them.

Just let me know.

(follow ups say James married a Nancy had a daughter Sarah who married Bryant W. Jones born in 1822, died 1902.

2318 1810 Census - Orford, Grafton Co, New Hampshire.

1810. The chief event this year was "Cold Friday," which occurred Jan. 19. The early part of the preceding day the weather was mild, but later a cold wind sprang up and the thermometer began to drop. The next morning the wind blew a gale and the thermometer had fallen fifty degrees. At Sanbornton the record was made of twenty-five degrees below zero and several lives were lost. The gale did much damage to timber, and the intense cold caused much suffering, but there were no fatalities in this town. The great wind increased the severity of the weather, piercing the heaviest clothing, and finding a ready entrance to the rude homes of the people. (History of Bristol, Grafton Co, NH, Vol I Annals of the Town - note: Bristol was only about 20 mi from Orford)

1811 - Mar 14 - living in Orford, Grafton Co, NH; certified that he "embraces a belief in the Religious tenets of the denomination of Christians called Methodists and does pay for the support the gospel in that order."

1812 War of 1812 a Jacob H Sherman enlisted from New Hampshire.

Roll Exct.: 602

1814. Monday, Dec. 6, heavy shock of earthquake, continuing forty-five seconds.

1815. Spotted fever prevailed to considerable extent this year and there were many fatalities. People stricken with this disease were frequently carried off within twenty-four hours. Among the fatal cases were four children of John Favor.

1815. The great gale of Sept. 23, which did great damage in the central portion of the state, appears to have visited New Chester and Bridgewater more lightly, though much damage was done to fruit trees and buildings.

1816. Spotted fever again raged. In January, Ephraim Quimby lost six children in five days. All were buried in two graves.

1816. The first months of this year were remarkable for the small amount of snow that fell and the warm weather that prevailed, the summer months as the coldest on record in this state. Snow fell and ice formed every month of the year. June 11, two inches of snow came.{1} So great was the damage done and suffering caused that the year was called "Poverty year." Farmers made heroic efforts to save their crops, and whole nights were spent in feeding huge bonfires near the corn to keep the frost from at least a part; but on the night of Aug. 19, there came a frost that bonfires could not drive away and all the corn in town was killed. There was not enough raised for seed the next year, and provisions of all kinds went to fabulous prices. The next March hay was worth from $25 to $30 per ton; corn, $2 per bushel, and other articles in proportion. Many had no hay at all the latter part of the winter, and could not obtain any, and many cattle died. (History of the Town of Bristol)

1817. This season the crops were plenteous and farmers prospered. The weather was propitious and no frost came till the 29th of September. Sunday morning, Oct. 5, while the people were at church, a heavy earthquake shock was felt. (History of the Town of Bristol)

1818 - aft Mar, moved to New York. The family fell onto hard times, and Jacob was put in debtor's prison in Madison Co, NY during 1818. To occupy his time in prison, he carved a beautiful wooden box, which is still in the family today. During their sojurn in NY, the family embraced the Catholic faith. (Desc of Jacob Haven Sherman - Linda Stewart)

1820 Census - Sherburne, Chenango County, New York. 1st four children baptized here: Lucinda, William Smith, Rebecca, and Leverett. Sherburne, New York, is about 15 miles from Lebanon, New York, where Mary stayed until her death. Lebanon is in Madison Co.
Late 1820s - family left New York

1830 Census - Mentor Township, Geauga County, Ohio.
Possibly went to Chardon, Geauge Co, Ohio with Aaron Stebbins, brother to Rebecca, or joined him there.

1840 - Lee County, Ohio. Willis and Rebecca Sherman Barnes are shown to be living next door.

1842 - in Springfield, Illinois

1850 St Louis Co, Missouri, St. Ferdinands Township, 17 September.

Died 18 November 1850.
Family still in Missouri in December 1853 when Jacob, Jr., married Magdelena Summers there. 1853 Leverett R & his wife Margaret had gone ahead of the family to Chambers Co (then Liberty Co) He received 160 acres of preempted land on Turtle Bay.
1854 Richard & Lothrop and their families arrived by ox-drawn wagons and settled on Turtle Bay.
1855 Rebecca, Jacob Jr, John, William Barnes and their families had joined the others on Turtle Bay. The Turtle Bay community was located near the town of Wallisville. Leverett sold land to his brothers and sister so they could establish themselves in their new home.

1813

Source:records found in Union Co. Courthouse 1949:
June 9, 1813 A final division into 10 shares which were minus the deductions made in his life time to the ten heirs were:
Thomas Draper a share
James Draper a share
Phillip Draper a share
Daniel Draper a share
Travis Draper a share
William Draper a share
Joshua Draper a share
John Burgess a share for his wife, Catherine Burgess
Thomas Dean a share for his children
Abraham Toney a share for his children who were heirs, minus what Wm. Toney bought at the sale.

Each share was less the amounts bought at the sale. James and Travis had no portion deducted for amounts bought at the sale, nor did Thomas Dean, who was then residing in Edgefield, SC. The portion bought by Wm. Toney was deducted from the part paid to Abraham Toney for his children.
No grandchildren?s names were listed.

It would appear that Anne Draper Dean had died before June, 1813. Sarah Draper Stubblefield and/or her husband and children are noticeably absent from the final settlement. There are Stubblefield?s whose family trees list Sarah Draper as wife of Edward and mother. Who mothered Abraham Toney?s children and therefore was considered eligible for a share of the estate?

2365 1819 - EARLY SETTLERS IN LAFAYETTE COUNTY, MISSOURI, 1881 (no publisher information, but probably a Goodspeed History),
[Lafayette Co., Missouri] CLAY TOWNSHIP: The first settlement in that portion of Lafayette County now known as ClayTownship, appears to have been made on or near the present town and site of the town of Wellington, in 1819. Colonel Henry Renick, William Renick, Ruth, widow of Samuel Renick, and Young Ewing, clerk of the first County Court, were the first settlers, all from Barren County, Kentucky. Thomas Hopper and two sons-in-law, Killion and John Young, appeared at about the same date, from Indiana, and Jonathan Hicklin with three sons, James, Jonathan and John, and three sons-in-law, Reddin Crisp, Dick Edmonson and William Edmonson, from East Tennessee. The above mentioned were nearly all heads of families, and opened farms. This settlement was further increased in 1820 or '21 by the arrival of Colonel William C. Ewing, Gen. McRay, John Wallace, Baker Martin and William Young and three sons - James, William and John.

2372 1820 census shows a Jacob in Jackson County;
a couple 26-44 (1776-1794) and one 1 male over 45 (bef 1775).
Jacob could be either younger or elder. There's an Abraham in 1840 Greene - so assuming he is younger and Jacob is the elder. Abraham is old enough to be taxpayer in 1812.
also 2 males under 10 (1810-1820), 1 f 10-15

Our Abraham could possibly be a male under 10 since he gave a wide range of ages in his census records.
other son is David.
David is in 1840 census, on tax list in 1836, and is in 1850 census with Catherine, age 74 next door - probably his mother.

Tombstone reads as follows:
In Memory of John L Lovelady
Feb 12, 1781
April 19, 1858
This stone is barely readable, the weather has withered away most of it.

In a paper titled: "First settlers of Nacoochee Valley - 1822" It states the following:
This paper was read by Henry Williams at a lawn party given at the Starlight House in 1922.
Following are the names of the sixty-two families who came to Nacoochee Valley, Habersham County, Georgia March 10, 1822. This group left Burke County, North Carolina on the first day of March 1822, arriving at Nacoochee Valley on the 10th day of March. They purchased land from the indians, who were later carried to Indian Territory (Oklahoma) in 1838, leaving Georgia in April of 1837. These sixty-two families came in two parties one just a day behind the other, often using the same camp fires at night. One party came from Burke County, NC and the other came from Rutherford County, NC.
15th Party: John Lovelady and family, settled near the Mauldin Family. (The Mauldin Familty is not listed on the paper)
50th Party: Benjamin West and Family & Frank West and Family.
23rd Family: Job Sosebee & Abram Sosebee and their Mother "Aunt Patsy", who had seven boys and four girls in the family.
13th Party: Wilkes T. Leonard and family, settled across the river near what is known as Robertstown Mine, later they moved to what is known today as the "Dover Mill Place" where he built a mill which is known today as the "Stoval Mill".

Although this paper states that they left North Carolina in 1822, I have to question the date. John Lovelady is listed on the 1820 Federal Census of Habersham County, Georgia.

Hopefully the following information will help you zero in on your Stephen Jones. Nicholas Smith was married to a Mary Jones (B: 8-9-1764 D:2-10-1847) on 11-16-1784 by the minister Alexander Balmain. Family biography tells that the father was Stephen Jones of Frederick County, VA. In 1802 Nicholas served as Stephen Jones' attorney on some land transactions in Kentucky. Stephen Jones was listed in the 1782 tax list for Frederick County, VA.

unk who he is. Doubtful that he is Robert's brother as records show Robert did have a brother William (1745-1782) being killed at Battle of Blue Licks.

This William is also there in 1810, seemingly the only Shannon in Henry Co. He was living between Israel Jones and Thomas Jones, brothers, sons of Stephen Jones who also named a son Mabra M. Robert's daughter Lilly husband was also named Mabra M. Jones.
