| 2635 | 1840s and 1850s Pike Counties Missouri and Illinois In approximately the mid 20th century two ladies came to the Waggoner Family Cemetery, which is located about four miles south of Pittsfield in Pike County, Illinois. They claimed that the Doaks were tall people and prone to TB, which was then usually fatal. The Doaks came to Pike County, Illinois from the area of Frankfurd, Missouri in Pike County, Missouri. Like the Waggoners, they left Missouri and crossed into Pike County, Illinois. The Doaks were a pioneer family and the members of the family of John and Lydia Doak left Missouri and followed the Oregon Trail in the 1830's and settled in Oregon. It is thought that one of the Doaks died on the trail before reaching Oregon. John and Lydia Doak and, at least their daughter Caroline, crossed with them into Pike County, Illinois and settled in Martinsburg Township. Caroline married Green Caston Waggoner in 1845 in Pittsfield, Illinois. http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/24994679/person/1589752955/media/1?pgnum=1&pg=0&pgpl=pid|pgNum From: Ralph Sent: Monday, September 22, 2014 9:52 PM To: lumoto1@gmail.com Subject: Proposed Change: John Doak, (son of who?) | 2640 | 1848 DEATH: An account of her death, written by her husband Thomas Wheat, appears in a letter to her son Charles Patterson 1848 DEATH: An account of her death, written by her husband Thomas Wheat, appears in a letter to her son Charles Patterson reproduced in Randle, Genealogy of the Patterson, Wheat, and Hearn Families, 1926, pp239-240. Portland, Jay County, Indiana, February 12, 1848. Mr. Charles Patterson: Dear Sir: I am under painful necessity of announcing to you the death of your dear mother. She died the first day of February, at 11:00 o'clock in the evening. The circumstances of her death is as fol lows: The third day of January, she took a severe attack of the apoplexy and, by the assistance of medical aid, she apparently got better on Monday. The last day of the month, Cecilia found her behind the corn crib helpless and speechless. The doctor was called in and she appeared to get better; continued so until Tuesday morning, when she took the last fit, which terminated her earthly existence. Although we have great reason to mourn the loss of her, yet our loss is her eternal gain, for she died in full faith of the Gospel of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. She was a woman of deep piety, her suffering was great, but they are over and she has entered into that rest that remains for the people of God. As to her virtues and fidelity in her different departments of her life, I need not comment, for they are well known to you. She was fifty-seven years, eleven months and five days old. As you had not the pleasure of seeing her for many years, I herein send to you a little of her hair, that you may have some idea of her looks. Farewell. A pen word on the matter: When John W. Wheat was at your house on his way to Mexico, you commenced to send us your paper and it was a welcome message. We received three numbers and it stopped. Why, we don't know. John informs us that the reason it stopped before was the Postmaster informed you that no such people lived here. We still live in Jay County, Indiana, and I think we will continue to live here. In your communications to us, direct them to Jay County Court House, Jay County, Indiana; then they will not miss. There is another Portland in the State of Indiana - it is information. We are all well at present - that is all at home. I am at home at present, with Cecilia and Jane, your two youngest sisters, whom you have never seen. Robert A. Wheat makes his home here, but is away now on his circuit - in Ohio. The last heard from B. Wheat and family, all were well. Thomas T. and William R. Wheat and families are well. Mary McClelland and family are well. Have not heard from John since he left Fort Leavenworth. Samuel J. Wheat, the last I heard, he was in Louisiana. He informed me that he was coming to see you this spring. I wish you would come to see us as soon as convenient. No more at present, and I remain your step-father in the bonds of love. February 12, 1848. THOMAS WHEAT. http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=marcwheat&id=I00026 | Patterson, Hannah Bonham (I40597)

| 2662 | 1850 - 20 Nov - Census - Harris Co, Texas It appears that the Curtis children could be the grandchildren of Abijah and Anne. Probably a daughter who married a Curtis and both parents have died pre 1850. Not sure if there's a way to find these people. Nothing is showing up in census records that I can find other than the one entry in 1860 and the one in 1870 -- both in Lynchburg - which seems to be the area where the Clark and White families were living. There have been a couple of Curtis family members marrying into the family, as well.
