Born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Scott Herron on April 25, 1882, in Illinois, he was married to Electa, who died in 1965. He is survived by three daughters , Mrs. Elizabeth Groppel of Jerse yville, Mrs. Myrtle Williams of Hardin, and Mrs. LeVeta Bailey of Emporia, Kan; a son, Howar d Herron of Newton, Ill.; five grandchildren , and 13 greatgrandchildren. He also leaves three half-brothers, John Herron of California, Cecil Herron of White Hall, an d Carl Herron. A sister, Lottie Craigmiles of Hardin and a half-sister, Nellie Herron of Whit e Hall are surviving also. Fiends may call at the C.C. Hanks Funeral Home in Hardin after 3 p.m. today. Melton, 53, of 410 Job St., East Alton, who had been ill and a patient in a St. Louis hospital recently, died unexpectedly Monday. He suffered the fatal illness a t home and was moved to Wood River Township Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arriva l at 4:55 p.m. Mr. Melton, a carpenter by trade, had returned home from a St. Louis hospital last week and w as believed to have been making satisfactory progress toward recovery. He resided in Alton area for the past 23 years, and was a member of Wood River Lodge, 1062, A .F. & A.M. He was a membger of the Methodist Church and belonged to Carpenter's Local 73, St . Louis. Born at Westfield, Ill., Dec. 7, 1906, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Willia m Melton. He was married in 1936 to the former Viola Sniders (sic). Surviving are his wife; a brother, Wayne of Monrovia, Calif., and two sisters. The body is at C. C. Hanks Funeral Home in Hardin where friends may call after 1 p.m. today. Mathews who died at her home near Grafton, was taken to Hardin Frida y morning on a yacht for burial. Mrs. Mathews had only been a resident of this city for a few weeks, ha ving moved from Hardln. She was taken ill with pneumonia a few days ago, which proved fatal. Shc leaven to mourn her loss a young husband, four daughters and one son, besides many othe r relatives. With his family he moved from Alton to California in 1939. He had been eomplyed here for a n umber of years by Hyndman Ice and Coal Co. In California he had been in the trucking business . The Jerseyville residents were killed and two others injured seriously in a collision involvi ng two autos and a truck on Rt. 67A in the Jerseyville limits near the Clark Service Statio n Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. Dead are: Joseph Ritter, 46, of 500 North State St., owner of an automobile agency here; Ome r Erdman, 47, and his wife, Mrs. Leavetta Erdman, 41, of East Prairie street. Injured were: Clarence W. Davis, 39, of 501 Fairground, and Mrs. Joseph Ritter, 45. Ritter was apparently killed instantly and Mr. and Mrs. Erdman died several minutes later i n Jersey Community Hospital. According: to state police, a car driven by Gayle Tucker, 33, of 800 Baxter, Jerseyville, wa s traveling north and struck the rear duel wheels of a tractor truck driven by W. L. Evans, 4 3, of Jerseyville. The Tucker vehicle was catapulted through the air and landed on top of th e Ritter auto, which was southbound. Police reported the top of Ritter's car was sheared off. Davis was admitted to the hospital w ith head and chest injuries and Mrs. Ritter with severe lacerations. Both were reported to b e in "fair" condition this morning. Tucker was given emergency treatment, then released. He was arrested at 1 a.m. following hi s release from the hospital and charged with driving a motor vehicle while under the influenc e of intoxicating liquor. He was taken to the county jail where bond was set at $5,000. The c omplaint was signed by State Patrolman Estcs of Jerseyville. Ritter was owner of Jersey County Motor Co., and was recently elected grand knight of the Jer seyville K. of C. Council. Gill, who was a government employe, had been in Alaska when he became ill last January and h e was taken to Mayo Clinic at Rochester, Minn., for treatment and later was moved to Muskogee , Okla., where a brother resides. Gills wife and two children; his wifes uncle, and an airplane pilot were killed in an airpl ane accident two years ago last July when they were on their way from their home in Houston , Tex., to Boston, Mass., to enter the Gills son, John, in a school there. The plane belonged to Mrs. Gills uncle and was being piloted by his pilot. Bodies of the pla ne crash victims were not found for four months after the accident. Gill, whose parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. Gill of Newbern, had visited Alton last Augus t with his aunt, Mrs. Updike, when he was on his way to Anchorage, Alaska. 34149 | [A Snider-from Julie Goheen.FTW] Alton Evening Telegraph 9 Apr 1938 Fieldon Infant Dies As Mother Is Operated On While Mrs. Mabel Mathews Shumake, 32, wife of Melvln Shumake of near Fieldon, was undergoing treatment at St. Joseph's Hospital following an operation, her infant daughter, Mary Jane Shu make, died unexpectedly at the home of an aunt, Mrs. Mildred Worsham, Rosedale township, where it w as being cared for :while the mother was in the hospital. The baby died 'Thursday at 3 a. m., before a physician could be summoned. At an inquest condu cted Thursday afternoon by Coroner H. H. Seely at the Gubser funeral home in Jerseyville, a verdic t of death, probably due to pneumonia, was returned. At the inquest Mrs. Worsham testified that Mary Jane had been suffering with a "croupy cold" since last Thursday, but that on Wednesday her condition seemed improved. It was not though t the child was seriously ill until 1 a. m, Thursday. The location of the Worsham home and we ather conditions prevented a physician from being obtained before the baby died. Because of the serious condition of Mrs. Shumake, she was not told of the death of the baby u ntil yesterday. She will be unable to leave the hospital to attend the funeral, hospital atte ndants said, and may have to remain there for further surgical treatment. The baby's mother is a patient in St. Joseph's Hospital in Alton and the child was being care d for at the home of her aunt, Mrs Mildred Worsham in Rosedale An Inquest was conducted at the Gubser Funeral Home in Jeneyville Thursday afternoon by Coron er H. H. Seely. The baby's aunt, Mrs. Worsham, testified that Mary Jane had been suffering with a "croupy col d" since last Thursday, but that on Wednesday her condition, seemed improved. It was not'thou ght that the child was seriously ill until about 1 o'clock Thursday morning. The location of the Worsham home and weather conditions prevented a physician from being obta ined before the baby died at 3 o'clock. He volunteered for Project Read Illinois Youth Camp and coached numerous youth basebal l leagues. He was a member of Alton Wood River Sportsmans Club, the Fraternal Order of Eagle s Alton Lodge 254 and the Alton Motor Boat Club. Born July 15, 1916, in Fieldon, he was a son of the late August "Gus" and Sarah (Snider) Rush. He leaves behind his loving wife of 60 years, Roberta Inez (Sneed) Rush, whom he married Oct. 15, 1938. Also surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Larry Wayne Rush of Fosterburg and Garry Phillip and Evelyn Marie Rush of Grafton; a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela Rush-Hutto and James Ernest Hutto of Godfrey; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Kelly Jo and Rusty Wittman of Jerseyville; and three great-grandsons, Mitch Russell Wittman and Stone Rush Wittman, both of Jerseyville, and Adam Joseph Damm (Rush) of Alton. Sheff, a veteran of World War II. had been in ill health since his release from the service . Death was due to a gunshot wound, Sheff was born in Alton, Oct. 2, 1912, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Elery Sheff of Los Angeles, Cali f., for many years residents of Alton. Robert Sheff attended the Alton schools and was a student at Alton High School before enlisti ng in the navy at tho age of 17. While residing in California he was employed by MGM studios. During th e time he was In service he had served for 18 months on the Island of Luzon. He was born Aug. 17, 1947, in Carrollton to Lee Alvin and Sylvia Marie (Williams) Decker. He married Audrey Leah (Peeler) Akers on Aug. 6,1982, at the First United Methodist Church in Jerseyville. They have spent the past 21 years together. A 1965 graduate of Jersey Community High School, he entered the U.S. Army serving during the Vietnam War. Upon discharge, he returned to the area, where he was employed at Car gill Corp. in Florence, Ill., before obtaining employment as a truck driver with Century Conc rete, through Ash Grove Corp. in Overland Park, Kan. He was employed with them, while he an d his wife lived in Lee's Summit, Mo., until retiring in April 2001, when they both returned to Jerseyville. In addition to his wife, survivors include six children, among them Dr. Linda Fischer of Waterloo, Ill., Jayne Dandaneau of Clearwater, Fla., James Akers III of East Alto n and Kim and her husband, Jim Story, of Jerseyville; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildr en; one sister and brother-in-law, Sally and Bob Stahlschmidt of Alton; and two brothers and sist ers-in-law, Lee and Sondra Decker Jr. of Branson, Mo., and Samuel and Sharon Decker of Galesb urg, Ill. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Crawford Funeral Home (Jacoby Chapel) in Je rseyville. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville, with military services provided by the J erseyville American Legion Post 492 and VFW Post 4528. He was a member of both. He was born Jan. 15, 1930, in Alton to Willard R. and Gertrude A. (Herchenroeder) Mathews. H e married his high school sweetheart, the former Mary Helen Hunt, on April 16, 1955, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Alton. She survives. The U.S. Marine Corps veteran was honorably discharged as a sergeant in 1952. He retired from Alton Box Board as an electrician after 35 years of service. He was past president of UPP Union Workers Local 976 and a board member for many years at the Al ton Box Board Credit Union. He was a member of Alton Moose Lodge 951 and Alton-Wood River Spo rtsman's Club and managed Little League baseball in Alton for six years. An avid bowler and golfer, he belonged to several leagues. He was a member of SS. Pete r and Paul Catholic Church. In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Julie Ann and Marc Co cozza of Alton; one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas V. and Liz Mathews of Overland Park, Kan. ; five grandchildren, Mitchell Ryan Daniels, Elizabeth Anne Enstall, Rebecca Marie Enstall, G race Helen Mathews and Natalie Rose Mathews; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Dorothy Mae an d Herman Boren of Godfrey and Carol Ann Martenize of Austin, Texas; one brother, Ralph Mathew s, and his wife, Mary Catherine, of Bethalto; one sister-in-law, Kaye Mathews of Alton; numer ous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Richard Mathews; a sister and brother-i n-law, Ruth and Roland Jun Jr.; one niece, Linda Boren; and his inlaws, Victor C. and Helen M . Hunt. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until services at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Gent Funeral Home i n Alton, with Father Roger Schoenhofen officiating. Burial will be at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Godfrey.
