Morgan" arrived today from Texas Dept. of Health. Date of Birth: 12 August 1867 Jefferson Co., TX Date of Death: 28 Sep 1943 Beaumont, Jefferson Co., TX Father: ALVIN MORGAN Mother: ELIZA MEYERS Informant: Mrs. H. H. Brinchman (dgt. Florence) Place of Burial: Forest Lawn Cemetery, Beaumont Ruth A. McVey mac@lcc.net _________ Jefferson County and Beaumont in particular are where my Morgan's are from. My GF Morgan was born in Hamshire and after returning to the area in 1882 spent the remainder of his life there. My Dad was born in Beaumont 22 Sept 1893 s/o O. A. Morgan & Alice Frezia (original spelling Fruge' also spelled Fregia, Frugia, Fruger, Frusha etc.). My GF Morgan also applied for a Confederate Pension 5 June 1941 as Oliver Alvin Morgan age 93 born August 12, 1847. No proof of service so the pension was rejected. The statement read: "Before me, a Notary Public, on this day personally appeared Oliver A. Morgan, commonly known as Bud Morgan, who being by me first duly sworn, on his oath says: That he was born on the 12th day of August, 1847. That hs joined the Army in 1862 and served in what is known as the Civil War and was discharged from the Army in July or July, 1865. That in the Civil War he served in Fates Battalion; that his Captain was George W. O'Bryan; that his Major's name was McReynolds; that his First Lieutenant was J. F. Keith. That this affiant was a butcher during the war, providing meat for the soldiers; That his associates were Captain Dick Dowlen, Jake Dallier, Oscar Hayes, Mark Wiese, J. B. Chambles, Alvin Stephenson, B. J. Johnson and Uriah Johnson. That he served with Martin Hebert, who was a member of the Calvery. That he was in the Battle of Sabine Pass when the Confederates blew up the boats and put the "Yankees" to flight. That others with whom he served were Jack Chriswell and Dan Daniels. That this affiant worked under Jim McCall and John McCall, who were in charge of the Butcher Department for the soldiers." The two witnesses to the affidavit were: M. G. GALLIER & W. A. HEBERT, SR. Needless to say my GF Morgan was about four or five years old at this time. Ruth McVey ------------------------ From: radmweed Date: Friday, January 17, 2003 08:30:39 PM To: Sherry Sharp Subject: Misc Info Hi Sherry, My grandfather O. A. (Oliver Alvin) "Bud" Morgan couldn't or wouldn't give his correct age for reasons known only to him. He was 2 on the 1860 Sabine Pass census making his birth year 1858 while his death certificate listed his year of birth 8/12/1867, Hamshire, Jefferson Co., TX. I have two typed copies of his obit's from the Beaumont Enterprise, Sept 30, 1943, pg 7:1 & Beaumont Journal, Sept 30, 1943, pg :1, the informant was Mrs. H. W. (Florence) Brinchman (dgt). Someone had a vivid imagination as to his life story. Stated he served as sheriff of Jefferson County a half-century ago, patrolled the Mexican border as a Texas Ranger in the early days, and his great-grandfather was one of the first landowners in the part of the Mexican state of Coahuila. Claimed to have been one of the first to congratulate Captain Lucas on bringing in the Lucas gusher in 1901, tales of breaking wild horses for Confederate soldiers in the Civil War and was a Confederate soldier (he wasn't old enough and was denied a pension for that reason). 1st marriage: Oliver MUGAN (sic) Mrs. Florence (Guthrie) HARDING 2 Jul 1877 Bee Co., TX. Also mentioned in GF Morgan's obit was a sister, Mrs. Renie PERRY of Crowley, LA. that I've never been able to find. My grandmother Mrs. Alice (Frugia) MORGAN married Charles A SEGELHURST 4 Oct 1916 at Beaumont. She was born 6 May 1868 Johnsons Bayou, LA and died 7 Dec 1921 buried Magnolia Cemetery. She was 14 when she married GF Morgan and he was 24. More later, Love ya, Ruth _______________________________ From: radmweed (Ruth) Date: 12/31/04 18:50:46 To: Sherry Sharp Subject: Happy New Year! I wish you a Happy New Year too! Forgot to tell you in the latest issue of Yellowed Pages they had printed a newspaper article from the Beaumont Enterprise published around 1941 and it was about Uncle Bud Morgan, my grandfather! The old fart lied about his age saying he was 96 when he wasn't. Then said he supplied beef for Dick Dowling's men during the civil war when he wasn't but about 6. Said he was born on Moise Broussard ranchstead near the village of Hamshire (this is true). Stated his great grandfather was one of the first American landholders in what was the Mexican state of Coahuila (this is true - Bennett Blackman). Said he was the father of 17 children (I know of 13) and after the death of his mother Moise Broussard took him in. That his father lived to be 104 years and eight days old (not true). To top everything off he said his grandfather Dr. Archie Morgan was the first man to settle on Morgan's Point and it was named for him. That the land has never been transferred to anyone. His grandfather was named Archibald and may have been called Archie but I don't believe he was a doctor nor was Morgan's Point named after him. I'll have to give him credit he told a good story and I guess in the 40's it made good reading. | Morgan, Almond Oliver Alvin "Bud" (I8924)

Note from Lois Culver: No concrete proof that Alzena Hayes is member of this family (James Hayes Sr & Marie Johnson), only circumstantial. 1830 census shows a child under 5. Family history shows she had a brother Leonard. Family History sas 1st or 2nd cousin to husband. Education, census shows she could read and write. She smoked a pipe with an amber stem, and tobacco imported from Ireland. She is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, Victoria, Victoria Co, Texas. | Hayes, Alzena (I7409)

Page 72: Capt Willis Hargrave's company of rangers, by camping one night just north of the present town of Fairfield, furnished the first settlers for this portion of the conty. In his company were some of the Barnhill family, after whom Barnhill Township takes its name and they remembering the beautiful camp returned and settled here as soon as peace was proclaimed and the Indian was out of the way." Page 78 The company from Wayne Co was Company F, Third Regiment in the Mexican war, and the roster of the company is as follows:... Musician Jefferson W. Barnhill, Privates, Rigdon S. Barnhill ..." Barnhill 1858 to 1865 Page 179 - It is accepted tradition - a tradition borne out by local facts - that the first house in Fairfield was built by the Barnhills. They had entered the land from the Government, upon which the town was laid out, and had lived there for some time before, and thus may be termed the first settlers of the town, as well as the first of the township. This first house stood a little north of the present bank building, but on the opposite side of the street, near the marble factory. It has passed away with other landmarks of the pioneer days, and the spot now is only known by a few of the older citizens..... John Barnhill built the second residence in Fairfield on the lot where Mr. Thomas L. Cooper's handsome brick residence now stands. It was of logs, and was built by Barnhill just after his marriage which took place about the time of laying out the town. The elder Barnhill, the patriarch of the Barnhill family, died in Gallatin County before any of the family moved to this section, as we have stated in a preceding chapter, and his widow came here with her children among the earliest settlers of the county. Hardin Barnhill was the eldest son, and John, mentioned above, was the second, while Andley was the third and youngest. The family at one time was a rather numerous and prominant one - prominant in business and local affairs but of no particular pre-eminence. they were honest, industrious, honorable, faithful and accommodating - kings among their kind, fine types of their class, with instincts keenly whetted in their struggle for existence against the wild game, the ferocious beasts and the murderous savage. The Barnhills have now been dead for many years, with no lineal descendants surviving them nearer than the grandson of the Widow Barnhill - "Jeff" Barnhill, as he is called. Even he is growing old and is becoming bent with age and infirmity. There is much in the history of the Barnhills that recalls a type of that day. They had been admirably trained, or had trained themselves, for their place in life and in security and content had lived out their span, tilling to fullness their measure of ambition." Was the directory published after he died, and she was a widow by the time of the census? Is this surmised error on the part of the census taker what happened, or was Sophia someplace else and the kids were with Henry and Ellen for some reason? They are not Henry's natural children. Could he have had a brief marriage with Sophia and they were his steps? Sophia later is in New York with her children and going by the name Blumenthal. There was a Sophie Belke through the city directories shown as a widow to interchangeably Henry or Frederick Belke - this Sophie? As it turns out, there is a Sophie Balke whose death record in Galveston County is consistent with her being the widow of Henry's father, Frederick - probably named Frederick Henry, which seems much more likely than Sophia Blumenthal being that widow. Neverthless, since it is confusing in the census, and there's no absolutes, the children will remain attached to Henry, but they are not his children. ~ss | Cuniff, Ellen (I24157)
