• Notes

  Married: Husband of Sarah Frances "Sadie" Byrd/Bird (reportedly American Indian; family lore Cherokee, but not known). John Elbert Shelton reportedly met Sarah F. Byrd when he went into town with his father shopping and her family was also in town, their eyes met and it was love at first sight and he took her from the reservation. We believe John & Sarah likely married in Madison County ca 1868-1869 as they are found in the 1870 Census living as newly weds [1]
