- Ephraim Marsh went to Schooley's Mountain in 1816 and from 1820 until 1850 operated an inn. Some authorities believe he named it Heath house for is wife while others claim it recieved its name from Joseph W. Heath. He was manager ofthe Morris Canal, and his business enterprise was credited with making Schooley's Mountain a successful resort at the time. Being active in politics, he represented the county in both branches of the New Jersey Legislature and served as president of the senate. He was a judge of the court of common pleas, a member of the New Jersey constitutional convention, and a candidate for governor.
