- Pension Application dated 30 Jul 1818:
William enlisted in the army in 1776 in Botetourt Co, Virginia in the company commanded by Captain Thomas Posey of the 7th VA regiment commanded by Colonel Elis McClenachan. Signed up for two years. He was discharged from service in 1778. He delivered his discharge papers to Colonel Georg eHancock at Valley Forge in order to draw his pay but never received i t.He was in a skirmish in the regiment commanded by Colonel Morgan at Piscataway in the army and he received "a most dangerous" wound.
" It is known that, William, the oldest son of our John I returned to Front Royal where he married the daughter of John Tuckwyller, who was an early resident of that town. The daughter, Civilla Tuckwyller, removed soon afterward with her husban, William, to the Greenbrier river home where they lived with or near the John Hansons. Records have been found that the Tuckwyllers moved their land holdings and families to a farm near Lewisburg in Greenbriar County. This land was prominently involved i nCivil War when a battle was fought within its confines and is today h eldby the Tuckwyller family."
