  		Spaights 11th Calvary & Infantry Battalion The 11th was a mixed command organized with 400 men in April 1862 and served in the Department of Texas, formerly known as the 6th Texas Infantry Battalion it can trace its origins to the “Sabine Pass Guards” Militia formed in 1861. Some of Colonel Ashley Spaight’s Texas Confederate volunteer companies were also known as the “Swamp Angels,” all of which served to defend the Texas gulf coast and Louisiana borders from Federal incursions. ~~ One of the 400 was my 3gr-grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Court.(d)

Served in "A" company, 11th (Spaight's) Battallion Texas Volunteers (formerly 6th (Likens') Batt'n TX infantry) as a private. Died in the war. SQ pg 3357: "Albert Sparks, son of John and Malinda (Jones) Sparks, was born on March 21, 1841. He served in Likens Battalion Texas Volunteers, Confederate States Army. This unit was reorganized and changed to A . W. Spaights Battalion Texas Volunteers. Albert Sparks died while on a military campaign in 1865. *************** See the December 1969 issue of THE SPARKS QUARTERLY, Whole No. 68, pg. 1280, for a record of his military service: ALBERT SPARKS (born about 1841) Albert, Sparks enlisted for the duration of the war at Sabine Pass on September 20, 1861 by S. B. Davis, as a private. On October 1, 1861, he joined and was enrolled in Capt. J. N. Blair?s Company of what was initially called Capt. J. M. Blair ?s Company in Likens' Battalion Texas Volunteers. He gave his age as 20 years. This company subsequently became Company A, 11th Battalion Texas Volunteers. Albert Sparks?s name appears on the company?s muster roll from September through December 1862, The official history of this battalion reads as follows: This battalion was organized in the latter part of 1861, with one cavalry, one artillery and two infantry companies and known in that field as Likens? Battalion Texas Volunteers. Early in 1862 an infantry company and a cavalry company were added and it was designated the 6th Battalion Texas Infantry. It was reorganized June 17, 1862, and known in the field as A. W. Spaight ?s Battalion Texas Volunteers.
