Divorce |
- Elizabeth filed for divorce in April 1898 citing "unkind, harsh and tyranical [sic] treatment" toward her. I have a copy of the original complaint which her great, great grandson provided me. According to the complaint they stopped living together in April 1896 as she couldn't stand the ill treatment which had begun within 6 years of their marriage. His treatment of her was "excessive, cruel & outrageous and of such a nature as to render their ever again living together insupportable, and that she is entitled to a divorce."
At the time of the filing, the community property was as follows:
500 acre lot, 80 acre lot, 10 cattle, 50 horses, 25 sheep, one ox wagon, one buggy and buggy-horse, household & kitchen furniture.. all totalling in the aggregate $2330.00.
She asked for $50 quarterly during the suit.
Case #2011 in Jefferson County with a file date of 19 April 1898. Date divorce granted was not given.
