- Maj. Richard Taliaferro, Sr. married Elizabeth Eggleston of James City County, VA, and lived at Powhatan, the Eggleston ancestral estate where Taliaferro designed and built a new house, Powhatan, in the Georgian style. Powhatan passed out of the Taliaferro family in 1810.
Richard was a planter as well as the colonial architect and builder of Williamsburg, Virginia. Richard built the Wythe house for his daughter, Elizabeth and her husband, George Wythe. This house has been recognized as the most handsome colonial house in Williamsburg--the Wythe House , a Georgian style building that was built in the mid 1750's. Taliaferro's other works were public buildings, including adding a ball room and supper room to the Governor's Palace
in 1752, the Capitol , and the President's House at the College of William & Mary
Feb 3 1775. "In the name of God Amen, I, Richard Taliaferro of the Parish and county of James City, being aged, but of sound mind and memory, do make my last will and testament as forth with. I give and desire my house and lotts in the city of Williamsburg situate on the west side of Palace Street, and on the North side of the Church yard, to my son-in-law Mr. George Wythe and his wife, my daughter Elizabeth during their lives. - and I do hereby constitute and appoint my Son-in-law the said George Wythe and my said son Richard Taliaferro Executors of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills by me made
Virginia Gazette, July 3, 1779, "died Richard Taliaferro, Esq., in the 74th year of his age, with gout in his head." Richard lived in James City, VA. Richard made his will 3-Feb-1775 and it was proved 19 Aug., 1779. Richard was the architect for the Govenors' Palace, the Capitol, and the President's house at William and Mary College. Richard built the beautiful house "Powhatan" outside Williamsburg, VA. The bricks for this house were imported from England."
