Notes |
- According to Muhlenberg County, Kentucky; Turner Publishing, Paducah, KY, 1996, p. 120, col. 1 bottom, Elizabeth and William Dukes were the out-of-wedlock children of Sarah Duke. They were awarded to Samuel Dukes, Jr., in a Bute Co., NC, court of law on Feb. 8, 1779, when Elizabeth was five and William was three. Samuel and Wennifred raised the children. Elizabeth came with them to Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.
WFT vol 5, Tree #1716 has Elizabeth marrying John Shutt on Feb. 5, 1825 in Muhlenberg County. However, according to Carol Tefft, ctefft@pacbell.net, on 1 Nov 2000, this appears to be another Elizabeth Groves.
According to Solomon Groves' son, Samson, Elizabeth married George Gates, and they both died about 1825. (Carol Tefft took this from the 1891 Biographical Album of Macoupin County, IL, pp. 831-832.)
