- There is confusion about this Robert, Robert's spouse, and Robert's descendants, because there were two "Roberts." Two Robert Matthews were born in North Carolina at about
the same time; two Roberts moved to Maury County about the same time; and two Roberts lived and died in the same area of Maury County. There is no doubt that they were kin to each other, but the exact kinship has not been determined. One Robert was the likely the brother of John,
Joseph, and Martha Hanna, and the other Robert was likely a cousin.
Y-DNA testing has confirmed kinship of the "Cousin Robert" but has not clarified if "Cousin Robert" was indeed a cousin, or was the brother.
One Robert (this Robert, son of James Matthews and Mary Doak) married Mary McKinnon; the other Robert (Cousin) married Mary Ann Stewart. The family of Robert Matthews and Mary Ann Stewart is chronicled in the book, Sampson Stewart, His Royal Ancestors and Some of His Descendants.
