Notes |
- David Luke Simmons moved from Louisiana to Tarkington Prairie near Liberty ,Texas in Liberty County. They moved there with his Uncle David D. Forman and Aunt Polly (Mary Simmons) Forman.
It was while living in Tarkington Prairie a party was formed to rescue the Indians in East Texas (Alabama-Coushatta). These had suffered a severe loss of lives as a result of a double tragedy: starvation caused by a severe drought and an epidemic of fever. The Indians were fast dying. This wagon train was organized and supervised by Rev. D.D. Forman. Two drivers of the oxen drawn wagons were David Luke and his brother James Colbert Simmons. Their Indian friends were brought to Liberty County and there settled on the Trinity River. They remained there until they moved back to East Texas, on a reservation furnished by the U.S. Government.
David Luke operated a general merchandise store at Tarkington Prairie, it is still standing (1973) and is known as the Wells Antique Store. David Luke Simmons is next found in Liberty Hill, Texas. Three brothers moved together with their Uncle D.D. Forman and Aunt Polly. They were D.L., James Colbert, and Abner Simmons.
David Luke Simmons helped to operate the lumber yard and hardware store, originally built and owned by D.D. Forman. It was located just across the railroad tracks from the Liberty Hill depot.
On Feb. 4, 1864, he married Eliza Hall, in Calcasieu Parish, La. at her residence.
David Luke Simmons was in the Confederate Army, 16th Louisiana Infantry Co. K.
