Mr. Ward--
I would have responded earlier to your post, but I was unaware of it.
Edward Dale of Lancaster Co., VA belongs to the family of William and Elizabeth (Elliott) Dale of London. He is evidently their son.Edward Dale used William Dale's arms, which were granted in 1613.William Dale's arms appear in a herald's Visitation of London.William Dale's brother Roger Dale received a separate grant of arms in 1602.Robert Dale, the father of three sons--Robert Dale, Roger Dale, and William Dale--did not have a coat of arms.
I know of no connection between Edward Dale and Vincent Stanford. The childless Stanford probably gave Mary Dale the 800 acres out of kindness to provide for her because she was younger than Katherine Dale.Stanford had been Lancaster Co. clerk prior to Edward Dale.
Mary Dale had one proven child, Humphrey Jones Jr. of Middlesex Co., VA.Mary Dale's first husband, Daniel Harrison, was deceased by 11 Jul 1677 when Mary (Dale) Harrison was granted administration on his estate. She was deceased by 11 Apr 1683 when Edward Dale was granted administration on her estate.Edward Dale never acknowledged any of the Harrison children as his grandchildren, so we may presume that they were not.The birth order of the Harrison children was Hannah, Eleanor, and Joseph.Edward Dale did not mention Humphrey Jones Jr. in his will, even though Humphrey Jones Jr. was living at the time.
On 10 Feb 1685/6, Joseph Harrison, Daniel Harrison's youngest child, appeared in the Lancaster Co. court and chose Randolph Seagar as his guardian. The age to choose one's own guardian was 14.Therefore, Joseph Harrison was born ca. 1671/2.
Given the appalling infant mortality rates in colonial VA, it's very unlikely Stanford's gift to Mary Dale in 1658 was made when Mary Dale was an infant.Colonists felt that if a child survived for a few years after birth, their chances of making it to adulthood were increased.I agree that Mary Dale was not a daughter of Diana (Skipwith) Dale.
Although I agree with your conclusion that Katherine (Dale) Carter was not a daughter of Diana (Skipwith) Dale, I felt you did not research Mary Dale sufficiently to discuss the issue.I was also concerned that you used a transcription of the Thomas Carter prayer book as evidence, when the original is in existence and held by the Virginia Historical Society.
This should clarify some issues relating to the family of Maj. Edward Dale of Lancaster Co., VA.
