Notes |
- LV: Uriah said in 1850 that he was born in LA and in 1860 that it was NC. His brother Zedekiah
said in 1850 that he was born in SC, and we have some reason to believe that these boys belonged to a Gibson family that was in Craven Co, SC in the same general area that a number of other early LA settler families came from.
First Settlers of Jefferson Co, Texas by Gifford White
Land Grants in Texas: 22nd applicant: Uriah Gibson took and Subscribed to the oath required by the 12th Secretary of Land Law that he emigrated to Texas in 1835. It was proven that he was a citizen of Texas at the date of the Declaration of Independence by the oath of Nathaniel Bouten and Elisha Allen.
_____
from LV: I seem to recall reading somewhere that Uriah and Elizabeth had no kids, and certainly none appear on the censuses available to me. According to the Peveto book, they did take in some of her sister Rhoda's children after Rhoda died somewhere in the timeframe 1834-38.
The Pevoto book sez "Uriah came to Jefferson County, Texas, in 1836 and was one of the first qualified voters of the county in 1837. He had a land grant in Chambers County, Texas, in 1848" Since he was listed on the 1840-60 Calcasieu cens, maybe he had residences in both states.
