In 1815 Mr. (W.R.) Padfield's grandfather moved with the family from Kentucky to Illinos, and settled about three miles south of the present town of Summerfield, on the place which was afterwards the residence of Col. Fred Hecker. Mr. Padfield's grandfather made the first improvements on the Hecker farm. He died at this place at the age of seventy-five. The settlement in this neighborhood, called Union Grove, was one of the earliest in that part of the county.
