As mentioned in the book, REMINISCENCES OF THE BOYS IN GRAY, 1861-1865, J. L. HANCOCK, Hempstead, Texas-Born Oct. 20, 1839 near Huntsville, Ala. Enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1862, in Mississippi, as private in Morland's Company, Warren's Regiment. Was changed from Mississippi to Alabama. Was in the battles of Chehaw, Ala.; Day's Gap, Colliersville, Tenn. Went into East Tennessee and tore up railroads. From there went into West Tennessee. He made a raid on Jackson, Tenn. Information taken from military records. He enlisted at Fort Henry, Tennessee, 8 Dec. 1861. He was captured at Fort Donelson, 16 February 1862 and on the roll of Prisoners of War at Camp Morton, Indiana, June 1862. He was captured at Big Black near Vicksburg, by the Army of the Tennessee, 17 May 1863 and sent to Memphis, Tenn. May 25, 1863. His name appears on the register of Prisoners of War at Fort Delaware, Del, 9 June 1863. He was paroled at Fort Delaware, Del, 3 July 1863. His name appears on the Roll of Prisoners of War at Nashville, Tenn. captured by forces under Maj. Gen. Thomas, 16 December 1864. He arrived at Military Prison, Louisville, Ky, during 5 days ending 25 Dec. 1864. He appears on a Roll of Prisoners of War at Camp Douglas, Ill, applying for oath of allegiance, Feb'y 1865. He was mustered into 6th U.S. Vols. March 25, 1865..
