DEWEES, DANIEL J. (1842-1923) D. J. Dewees was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. Not much is known about his early life, but he moved to Port Arthur, Texas in 1858. He joined the 11th Battalion of Texas Volunteers in Companies A and B, also known as Speights Regiment, on October 1, 1861.
Speight's Regiment was organized at Sabine Pass and mostly served in the surrounding areas. In both 1862 and 1864 Dewees served at Beaumont Post and in 1863 served in Houston the first few months of the year and in Central Louisiana the last 8 months. Dewees was taken prisoner at the close of the war and paroled July 12, 1865.
Dewees married after the war, though his wife's name is not known, and worked as a machinist. He moved into the Confederate Home on March 31, 1919. Dewees lived the rest of his days in the Confederate Home until his death on March 1, 1923 at the age of 81.
