Lafayette Cemetery 3285 Mount Diablo Blvd Lafayette, Contra Costa, California Lafayette's cemetery was established on 4-1/2 acres of hillside property owned by Medford Gorham. In 1874, he sold the property for $100 to the Cemetery Corporation which was chaired by Elam Brown. The Corporation fenced the property and located the roads as they presently exist. The original Death and Burial Record Book, still on file in the cemetery caretaker's building, shows names of the deceased, date and cause of death, plus age and place of death. A complete copy of the book is in the Lafayette Historical Society file in the Lafayette library. In 1937, the Alamo-Lafayette Cemetery District was formed with county taxation to ensure perpetual care. (findagrave) Lafayette Cemetery is at 3285 Mount Diablo Blvd in Lafayette, between Pleasant Hill Road and the Lafayette Park Hotel. Take Hwy. 24 to the either Central Lafayette exit (and turn left on Mount Diablo Blvd) , or the South Pleasant Hill Exit and turn left on Pleasant Hill and left again onto Mount Diablo. http://coccc.tripod.com/photos3.htm |

Oak Ridge Cemetery 1441 Monument Avenue Springfield, Sangamon Co, Illinois 62702 phone: 217-789-2340 Oak Ridge Cemetery is the largest cemetery in Illinois at 365 acres and is the second most visited cemetery in the United States. Home of President Abraham Lincoln's Tomb, this active cemetery's first burial was in 1858. The cemetery was officially dedicated on May 24, 1860 and it was reported that Abraham Lincoln and his wife were present at the dedication of the cemetery. Oak Ridge is the burial home of many settlers of Springfield and Sangamon County and state and local officials. For many years the cemetery was segregated as to both color and religion so some areas tend to represent one race, religion or social status. There are several war memorials and a newly dedicated area for the Home of the Friendless residents who were buried there in the late 1800s. Several cemeteries were closed and the remains moved to Oak Ridge over a span of many years. Those include: Hutchinson, Old City Graveyard, Avenue, Kelly, Lanterman, Lightfoot, Elliott, Dunn and Schamel cemeteries. Oak Ridge consists of over 50 sections and 75,000 burials. The office is open 8 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. weekdays and 8:00 a.m. – noon on Saturdays (March through November). The staff is very helpful in providing burial locations and should be contacted for plot information when requesting a photo. Other cemeteries that were moved to Oak Ridge Cemetery include Cotton Hill Cemetery, Springfield, Illinois; Clear Lake Cemetery, Springfield, Illinois; Old High School City Cemetery, Springfield, Illinois; Crowder Cemetery, Springfield, Illinois; Home of the Friendless Cemetery. Chicopee Street Burying Ground, Chapin Mausoleum, Chapin, Chester W. (photo kindly provided by Don Calloway) Chester W. Chapin (February 16, 1842 - November 11, 1922) The epitaph "Home is the sailor, home from the sea, and the hunter home from the hill" is from the "Victory Crowned - Requiem" written by Robert Louis Stevenson. In its entirety it is as follows: Under the wide and starry sky, Dig the grave and let me die Glad did I live and gladly die And I lay me down with a will. This be the verse you grave for me- Here lies where he longed to be, Home is the sailor, home from the sea, And the hunter home from the hill. Chicopee Street Burying Grounds Notes: 228 Chicopee Street contact info: Cemetery Department 687 Front Street Chicopee MA 01013 (413)594-3481 Chicopee Street: For more than sixty years, the people of Chicopee continued their connection with the old First Church in Springfield, finding their way on foot, or on horseback, fording the Chicopee River, at the Indian Wading Place, or smetimes going by canoe down the Connecticut. The sabbath services and the weekly lectures were their edification and delight. Their lives were regulated by its ordinances and discipline; and when death came, they were laid to rest in the Old Burying Ground at the foot of Elm Street on the banks of the Connecticut. The names Japhet and Abilene, his wife, may still be seen on the old headstones in Peabody Demetery. They were removed when the building of the railroad made it necessary to discontinue the old burying place. " Annals of Chicopee Street Clara Skeele Palmer Harvard College Library page 20 Rootsweb message board: "Chicopee Cemeteries Notes: The earliest cemetery was established at the foot of Elm Street in Springfield. The "Old Burying Ground" was Chicopee's colonial cemetery on Chicopee Street (where all the Chapins are buried) -- first buried there was Miss Sarah Hitchcock in 1741. Thanks to Gail Ferris for contributing this information. The "Old Burying Ground" was Chicopee's colonial cemetery. The first burial dates back to 1741." |

Lovelady Cemetery Cookesville, Putnam (formerly White) County, Tennessee Located in the southern portion of Putnam Co. From HWY 136 south toward White Co, turn right on Lovelady Rd(abt 5 miles south of intersection of I-40 and HWY 136.Cemetery is 1-2 miles on Lovelady Rd. Stones are located on both sides of the road. Lovelady Cemetery donated by Nichols family. Directions to the site are quite easy. if your coming out of central Cookeville, TN head south on Highway 136 (Jefferson Ave) continue south on past I-40 3 miles until Highway 111 (Old Sparta Rd) joins with Highway 136. Continue south until you reash Lovelady Road in 1 mile. I believe the cemetery is just under 1 mile west on this road on the left just past Johnson Drive or at the interesection of the Drive. There is a very delapidated sign that has the name of the cemetery there on the left. You see right on the right side of the road a couple of more kept up tomstones, but the largest portion of the cemetery is off on the south side of the road. (findagrave description) Transcription of cemetery (Thomas Lovelady's marker from 1830, apparently long ago decayed, is not noted. |

Old Celina Cemetery Information provided by the State of Texas Atlas Site Location: On CR 55, via FM 428, 2.5 M SW of Celina Marker: The town of Celina, settled by natives of Celina, Texas, was founded near this site in 1870. The oldest grave here is that of a child who died in 1884. W.J. Bounds (1830-1886) donated the land as a community cemetery after the death of Elizabeth McWhorter on Feb. 28, 1885. In 1900 residents of Celina began to relocate their homes and businesses along the railroad (2.5 mi. ne). By 1910 only this burial ground remained at the original townsite. A cemetery association was formed in 1918. Several more acres were later added to the cemetery, which contains about 600 graves. ** (1976)*** (historic marker photo by http://www.necropoliscreep.net/ |

McFaddin Cemetery - TF Smith Homestead McFaddin Cemetery was located on property south of Beaumont, in Port Neches, Central Gardens at a location within the grounds of where DuPont is now. The cemetery was discovered in the Fifties, and due to the impending construction of the plant. (See attached newspaper coverage). There were about 30 people buried there whose remains were subsequently placed in four separate concrete boxes and relocated to Forest Lawn Cemetery where they were laid once again to rest in the Garden of Peace section. The headstones for the four graves are all identical, reading simply "TF Smith Homstead Tract Cemetery." The detailed list of occupants only exist on an index card in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park records (see copy attached). All of these people were either residents or descendants of the Sparks Settlement, also called Aurora, (what later became Port Arthur. The families were predominantly the Sparks, Courts and Gentz families and other family names who married into these families. Sparks Settlement was abandoned in late 1800s due to storms and disease; even the houses were moved. Most of them started another community in the Port Neches, Central Gardens area where they started a new cemetery - i.e. what was called the McFaddin Cemetery. Sparks Cemetery was also abandoned. The occupants of that cemetery, those who died while the community was active, were never moved; only recognized by a historical marker placed in a boulevard on DeQueen at Lakeshore (see photo). There is some false information on the Internet that the remains in Sparks Cemetery were removed to Forest Lawn. But what I have been able to discover is that is not the case. It is the later cemetery, McFaddin Cemetery, that was removed. There is also some belief that the cemetery was used even into the 1920s for burial needs; but that also seems to be mistaken information. The were fine and strong and brave pioneers who I am so proud to call my ancestors. They helped build our community here, and somehow, I hope to bring to mind the signifcance of those four plain little headstones marked simply "TF Smith Homestead Tract Cemetery." |

Landrum Cemetery Fannett, Jefferson County, Texas This cemetery is off Hwy 124 in Fannett. The road entering appears to be a private farm, however, just a short distance and you will see the cemetery off to the right. There is no road to it, so either a short walk or drive in the grass. I visited this cemetery on 10/17/10, and I did not see a gate on the front, back or side closest to the road; however there were flowers on some of the graves. I did not walk around on the far side of the cemetery. These photos are just to show the setting of the cemetery. Photos of many of these individuals' personal headstones can be found at findagrave.com |
