Starting with Peter through Amanda Mary Renfro. Dennis is a direct descendant and researches the Stephen Renfro line.
He received an scanned copy of an actual old Knoxville newspaper article showing Stephen, Jr. dying at the hands of the Creeks during their repulse from east Tn by McClellan. He also has Stephen, Jr.'s probate, dated 1794 which lists his wife Margaret Renfro; however no maiden name was given. He also stated that Stephen, Sr. was more than likely not the son of William and Elizabeth Renfro but he and other researchers think Stephen, Sr. the sibling of Peter, ca later 1690/1700. I have used his information for this line through Amanda Mary, 1828 md."

Rentfroe's home place became the Preston home, Greenfield, in 1761 and remained to this day. One part of the house are thought to be logs of the original pioneer home. Preston's son, John, became proprietor of the Greenfield estate.

On December 19, 1802, Stephen Rentphrow [Sr.] made his Will, which was recorded when it was probated in Knox County, Tennessee. It reads:

In the name of God amen, I Stephen Renfrow of Knox County and State of Tennessee, being of sound and perfect mind and memory and blessed by God, do this Nintheenth day of December 1802 publish this my last will and Testament,
that is to say, first I do hereby set free my Negro winch Jean and her forth child named Will on account of singular service performed to me.
2. I give and bequaith to the Lawful heirs of John and Stephen Renfrow my beloved sons both deceased an equal share with Elizabeth Looney, Ester Looney, also Moses Looney son of my beloved wife.
3. My Plantation and all my Personal and Real estate to be sold to the highest advantage and divided amoung the Legatees after the decease of my Wife, and further that it may be fully understood the Heirs of John and Stephen Renfrow be considered as two Heirs, and their Heirs to receive there shar[e] or fifth part of said estate when they are of full age from the Executioner, all Debts and Funeral expense being paid off.
4. And lastly I do const[it]ute appoint, and ordain Moses Looney son of my Wife to be my whole and sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament in witness whereof I Stephen Rentfrow have set my hand and affixed my seal this 19th day of Decemr. 1802.

On the second Monday in July 1804 in the Knox County Court Moses Looney was appointed the executor as follows:

Whereas it appears to the Court here that Stephen Rentphrow Late of this County is dead and hath made his last Will and Testament in Writing in which he hath appointed Moses Looney his Executor which Will hath been exhibited into Court and proved as the Law directs, It is therefore Ordered by the said Court that Letters Testamentory of all and singular the Goods and chattels rights and credits which were of the said Stephen Rentphrow deceased issue to the said Moses Looney he having qualified agreeable to Law ...

By late 1805 the Knox County Court ordered James White and Thomas Brown "commissioners to make settlement with the Administrator of the estate of Stephen Rentphrow deceased and make report thereof to next Court." (Know County
Estates, Book 1, p. 182). At the January 1806 session of the Court the commissioners filed their report and by this time Stephen Bishop was administrator of Stephen Rentphrow's estate.

Looney. Moses (3) Looney, who Stephen mentions, was a son of Robert (2) Looney, Jr. and Margaret Rhea Looney (who as a widow, married Stephen Renfro). Moses would have been Stephen's step-son. Capt. John (3) Looney would have been both his son-in-law and step-son.

[Judy Lee ] Keziah JONES married a Mr. BERRY, (date of marriage unknown), and had 4 more children: Nellie BERRY, Mary Polly BERRY, Keziah BERRY and Anna BERRY. I do not have birth dates on any of these children except Anna BERRY who was born abt. 1795 in Davidson Co., TN. I believe that Anna was the youngest child. I suspect Keziah JONES married Mr. BERRY abt. 1786-88. Keziah JONES-BERRY was deceased by 1804 as proven in a deed I have. This deed also proves that Betsy JONES, Shadrack JONES, Isaac MAYFIELD, Nellie, Mary Polly, Keziah and Anna BERRY were all heirs of Keziah JONES-BERRY.

Incidentally, I'm descended from the China Renfro who married John Word.
She would be my ggg grandmother. She was daughter of James Renfro and Charity Huff (Hough). James being the son of Moses and Hannah Renfro (dau. of Willia m Renfro & Eliz. Cheney), and Moses being son of Joseph Renfro and Mary Owens (Randolph). I've run across several other cousin marriages like this,, and quite a few where brother & sister married sister & brother,etc. Wonder we're not all simple minded! James Renfro and Charity Huff were my 6th great-grand parents. The pictures of their gravesites were taken in Pineville, Bell Co, Kentucky. It used to be called Cumberland Ford. James ran the ferry across the Ford and was also the tollkeeper for the Wilderness Road from 1822 until his death in 1835. They had 12 children. Charity died 1831 and James remarried to Dorcas Collier in 1832. They had one daughter, Mary Anne. (James was 70 at the time!) Their tombstones and that of their daughter, Mary (Polly) Renfro Moss were moved to the Moss plot in Pineville, due to flooding of the original si te. I am not sure if the bodies were moved. There is a small park at the site of Cumberland Ford, where their brick house was (destroyed during Civil War) . It now contains only illegible sandstone markers, which were for slaves. (J ames had 23 slaves). He was killed in a lightning storm while out searching for Swift's Silver Mine.

Shadrack JONES b. abt 1772/73 in NC. He married Cilia DOWLEN. We believe that Celia was a sister to Harris DOWLEN Sr. and the full spelling of her name was Urcilla. This family came from Warren Co., NC. The JONES-WATTS families were very close to the DOWLEN families. I have several deeds on Shadrack JONES which date from 1793 to 1804. The last record I have on him is the 1812 Militia list of Davidson Co., TN. He was in Capt. Dempsy Morris's company along with other family: James REEVES, Daniel REEVES, Elijah REEVES, Elisha REEVES, Isaac MAYFIELD, Thomas WATTS, Samuel HOWE, Harris DOWLEN Sr., Lewis WILLIAMS, Dempsy MORRIS, Edmond HYDE, and a few others that were in close contact with the family. The FELTS were also close family members. In an old letter we have from a collection of several family members there is one from William LEE who is a nephew of Shadrack's and Betsy's by marriage in which he states he had heard from "Uncle Shadrack Jones" and he was living in Mississippi. This letter was dated 1834.

Records of the Red River Settlement (Renfro Station) indicate that Abraham Jones was killed along with his mother and father and his brother was taken prisoner by the Indians. Accounts say that he and Mary "Polly" Rentfro had three children almost grown when he was killed and she
escaped with Shadrack and Betsy. However the date of Betsy's birth would make her an infant at the time of the Indian attack.

Tuesday, November 05, 2002 5:39 PM: Dear Delores, I came across you gedcom on worldconnect on the Abraham JONES family. I'm the g/g/g/g/g granddaughter of Abraham JONES by way of Elizabeth Betsy JONES.
I was delighted to see there was someone else who was researching this line!
Elizabeth Betsy Jones's birth date has always been a mystery. We think it was around 1775 in NC. I have a deed dated 15 Feb 1798 in Davidson Co., TN on Shadrack Jones and Betsy Jones is the witness. I don't know exactly how old she would had to have been in order to be considered an adult and witness the deed but, I'm thinking she would have, at least, been 21 which would put her being born around 1777. But, I think she was born before that. Betsy JONES-WATTS is in the 1850 Robetson Co., TN census as a widow. Her three spinster daughters are still living with her. It list her age as 65 which would put her being born abt. 1785 but, I know that is absolutely incorrect. The ages of her daughters are also incorrect.
First, let me give you the info I have on Betsy Jones.....
Elizabeth Betsy JONES b. abt. 1774-1775 in NC and died on 10 Jun 1863 in Robertson Co., TN. She married Thomas WATTS on 19 Nov 1807 in Davidson Co., TN. Thomas WATTS was born bet. 1770-1775 in NC and died 19 Sept 1837 in Robertson Co., TN. Children of Betsy JONES and Thomas WATTS are:

1. James WATTS, b.CTN and died after 1880 in Montgomery Co., TN. (Married twice and had 17 known children. James is my g/g/g grandfather).

2. Eliza WATTS, b. 29 Mar 1810 in Davidson Co., TN and died on the 22 Jul 1812 in Davidson Co., TN.

3. Mary "Polly" WATTS, b. 15 Jan 1812 and died 1 Mar 1885 in Robertson Co., TN. (Polly never married)

4. Elizabeth WATTS, b. 2 Mar 1814 in Davidson Co., TN and died 16 May 1876 in Robertson Co., TN. (Eliza never married)

All of the above info come from the WATTS family bible which belonged to Betsy JONES-WATTS and is now owned by my cousin, Roger WATTS.
I find it very interesting that you list Betsy's and Shadrack's mother as Mary Polly RENFRO. All the records I have indicate her name was Keziah but, we have never found her maiden name. How did you come by your information? I'm wondering if her middle name may have been Keziah???

Hello. I am descended from Marth a Renfro, born ca. 1847, daughter of
Lydia (Holcomb) Renfro. I had always be en told that Nathaniel was her
father. However, during a research trip to Ga rrard Co, Kentucky in September,
I found Nathaniel Renfro's estate probate, first paper filed 15 March
1837, with final settlement on 14 August 1841. It name d James Renfro as
guardian of Nathaniel and Lydia's children, James, Polly, Hyatt,
William, Elizabeth, and Riley. There is no mention of any other
ch ildren, including Elbert, born in 1838, or my Martha...born 10 years
after Na thaniel's death. I was unable to find any other marriage record
for Martha in Garrard. She is also listed as head of household on the
1840 census (no adult male her age in household), she's also alone on the
1850 and 1860 censu s. Who is the father of her several children born

This was "Polly" Rentfro and Living Brown. Polly is nickname for Mary and don't know where "Living" came from but probably some program glitch somewhere. Could he be David??? Gladys was born 25 October 1903 the fourth of eight children of Marion Arthur "Bud" Kirk and Lilia Bell Fritts.

George and Gladys made their home on the farm where George was born near the community of Hebron, Crittenden County. Some of their neighbors at the time were Jackson Winders, Sam Lucas, Tom and Frank Belt and Robert Underdown, in fact Jane Underdown was midwife to many of George and Gladys' eleven children.
