AN EARLY VAN BIBBER FAMILY

The Van Bibber family that was the first to settle in the New World was the family of Isaacs Jacob Van Bibber who came to Philadelphia in 1687. He came to America to prepare the way for his parents and the rest of the family that would soon follow. The Van Bibbers were residents of Krefeld (now Germany) and had been persecuted in Europe because they were followers of Menno Simons. Other Mennonites from Krefeld had come to Philadelphia in 1684 at the invitation of William Penn including Herman op den Graff, who was the husband of two of the sisters of Isaacs Jacob. Isaacs Jacob Van Bibber moved to Germantown (now a suburb of Philadelphia) and was engaged in commerce.
It was not long before the rest of the family immigrated to Germantown and resided there and in Philadelphia until moving to Cecil County Maryland. While in Germantown the family got involved in a religious dispute and perhaps that is what caused the migration to Maryland.

The VAN BEBBERs were originally Mennonites, and came to this Province as such at an early date. The first to arrive was Isaac Jacob VAN BEBBER in 1684. He was a native of Crefeldt on the Rhine. In 1687 he was joined by his father, Jacob Isaac VAN BEBBER, and his brother Matthias, and later by other members of the family.

They first settled in Germantown, but did not all remain there. The elder removed to Philadelphia in 1698 and engaged in mercantile pursuits. Matthias settled on the Schippach in 1702, and in 1704, together with his elder brother Isaac Jacob, and a number of others from Germantown, removed to the Bohemia Manor.

From the fact that these men are frequently referred to as Isaac Jacobs, Jacob Isaacs and Matthias Jacobs, some writers have assumed that they were German Jews. Such, however, is not the case. They were Mennonites, but, like many others of the early settlers, after their sojourn in the Province, they became somewhat unsettled as to their faith. This is shown by the report sent by Johnan Gottfried SEELIG, one of the original Pietists, who arrived in 1694, to SPENER, wherein, writing of Jacob Isaac VAN BEBBER, he states: "He was formerly a Mennonite, but he desirtes to depart with his whole house, to acknowledge and abandon the follies, scandals, shortcomings and stains of his former religion."

It was this spiritual unrest which evidently induced the VAN BEBBERs to remove to the Bohemia Manor, where at that time the Labidist Community was at the height of its development.

Upon the arrival of the party at the Bohemia Manor they at once stated to erect several buildings, the chief one being known as the "Great House."

HENDRICK/HEINRICH VAN BEBBER was a brother of Isaac Jacobs and Matthias Jacobs, born in Utrech, Holland, and came to America in 1720­1721. He had been a wealthy coffee merchant in Holland before coming. He was very wealthy. He settled in Cecil County, Maryland where he died in 1733, leaving a will there that is written in Dutch. The English name is Henry VAN BEBBER.

This Henry VAN BEBBER had an oldest son names Jacobus, (James in English), that married Ann LARONS/LAROUN. Jacobus died at Bohemia Manor in Cecil County, Maryland. Henry's will was recorded in Cecil Co., MD.

Jacobus (James) had a son named Henry VAN BEBBER, born July 22, 1729 in Cecil Co., Maryland. He married Hester GOODING (1737 ­ Nov 16, 1802), the daughter of Jacob GOODING. Hester is buried in Northend Cemetery, Mathews Co., VA. They had children: Andrew, James, and Henry, Jr. VAN BEBBER.

Jacobus also had children: Catherine, Anna, Jacob, Isaac, and Abraham. Many of these people can be seen among the records of the wealthy of the county, dealing in shipping and other industries of the area.

Upon the arrival of the party at the Bohemia Manor they at once stated to erect several buildings, the chief one being known as the "Great House." Several families soon arrived from Wiewerd followed by SLUYTER's wife, who, as abbess, presided over the women. Some converts also came from New York. Thus was founded in North America a branch of the Labadist Community of Waltahouse, of which SLUYTER proclaimed himself bishop, under YVON, Archbishop of Wiewerd.

The settlement at Bohemia never numbered over one hundred, men , women and children all told, mostly novices of probationers, whose faith was to be tried by a very sever system of discipline and mortification. Fire, for example, was not permitted in their cells in the coldest weather, though there was so much wood about them that they were forced to burn it in order to be rid of it.

They were to live hidden in Christ. All desires of the flesh were to be subdued. A former minister herded cattle; a young man of good family carted stone or bent over a wash­tub. Food to which they had repugnance must be eaten, and sins confessed in open assembly. There were different grades to be attained in conformity to the principles and discipline of the society.

Punishments were the deprivation of clothes, taking a lower seat at the table and expulsion. The highest rank, that of brother, was gained by total separation from the world. They took their meals in silence, so that men ate together for months at the same table without knowing each other's names. The men and women ate at different tables. They slept in different rooms which the head or his substitute might visit at all times for examination or instruction.

They labored on the land, and at different trades or employments assigned by the head. Their dress was plain, all worldly fashions being prohibited as well as luxuries of all kinds. They worked for the Lord and not for themselves­­not to gratify their desires, but merely to sustain life. All property was held as common stock, into which all joining the community put what they owned and left it when they withdrew.

The geographical position f the Labidist settlement was originally in Baltimore county, now Cecil county, on the north bank of the Bohemia river, embracing several thousands of fertile acres. The Bohemia river empties into the Elk, which flows into Chesapeake bay. The house or mansion of Herrman was destroyed by fire, but the foundations are visible within a few hundred feet of the river. The remains of his deer park can also be seen. His body was removed to the Bayard vault, a short distance from the old mansion, and when this was abandoned for another vault in Wilmington. No mark was left of his burial place. An oolite slab in the yard of another house, built after the burning of the first, records the memorial of "Augustine HERRMAN, Founder and Seater of Bohemia Manor."

It has been stated, upon different occasions, that here was some similarity in doctrine between the Labadists and the Quakers; also that LABADIE and William PENN were at Oley and Frederick as a recluse. Becoming acquainted with the Moravians, he removed to Bethlehem in 1746. Two years later, Oct 15, 1748, he died, and was buried among the single men on the hill.

In the meantime VAN BEBBER's health became impaired by the rigorous life pursued by BEISSEL and his companions, so he, too, felt constrained to leave the cabin on the Muhlbach. BEISSEL was loth to lose him, and the parting was a painful one, as noted in the "Chronicon":

"He took leave of the Superintendent (BEISSEL) with much love, and protested that it was not possible for him live in that way. The former gave him the following counsel to take with him: 'Know that when you are successful in the world, God has forsaken you; but when all misfortune comes upon you here, then know that God still loves you.' After many years he froze both hands and feet in s shipwreck and was put under the care of Christopher WITT in

Germantown. There he remembered this farewell, and sent his last greeting to his old friend."

Members of the Van Bebber family arrived at Philadelphia shortly after William Penn, having been recruited by him in Europe. Isaac Jacobbs Van Bebber was one of the original immigrants from Krefeld, Germany (a few miles from the Holland border), who arrived in Germantown, then a separate settlement from Philadelphia, on November 8, 1684.

Peter's sons, Peter, John, and Isaac, fought in the Battle of Point Pleasant at Point Pleasant, Mason County, Virginia against Indians under the command of Cornstalk. This battle has often been recognized as the first battle of the American Revolution. Isaac died in the battle. John was a Captain and served in Indian wars, Dunmore's War, Colonial wars, and the Revolutionary War. Peter Jr. died in Mason County and John died in Kanawha County, Virginia.

I am still seeking confirmation of a marriage between a James Renfro and Esther Van Bibber. They were in various counties in VA in the mid to late 1700's and both died in Barren Co. KY. I have very little information on this couple.

Customers at the Greenbrier trading post of Sampson & George Matthews included: Isaac Van Bibber 6-1771 & 10-1772.
Those who paid with deerskins were Isaac Van Bibber, who killed the most deer, & Joseph & james Davis. Van Bibber selling at least 230 deerskins. Davis' sold more than 100 deerskins.
In 1774, Isaac Van Bibber, an Old Side Baptist Minister, served in the Southern Division of General Andrew Lewis, under command of Colonel Charles Lewis. Isaac was wounded in the Battle of Point Pleasant, on October 10, 1774, he died about 30 hours later, making his actual death date as October 11, 1774. He was buried beside Colonel Charles Lewis, & later moved, along with others, that were killed in the battle, to a nearby resting place.
An inventory of his possessions is found in Botetourt County, Virginia, his widoe, Sarah (Davis) Van Bibber, administrator.

Dear Sherry,
Isaac Michael Van Bibber 1725-1774 was killed in what is proclaimed one of the first battles - Battle of Point Pleasant in what was then Virginia. His son James Sr. is my line. Sometime after James Sr. they spelled it Van Bebber and that is how it is today.
Isaac was 49 when he was killed and left his family the youngest one under two I think.

GREENBRIER COUNTY VA COURT RECORDS
Pg 20 Sept 1790 On motion of Conrad Keller a commission is given him to take the acknowledgement of Cloe VanBibber wife of John VanBibber [son of Peter & Margery] her relinquishment of dower in land sold by her husband to said Keller. [NOTE: Capt. John VanBibber lived near Kellers now Summers County WV. They move to Point Pleasant after this date. Brother Peter had already settled there about 1781. The Indians were still a problem on the frontier which continued till the Anthony Wayne Treaty 1795.]

John Van Bibber had wandered over much of the eastern wilderness from Pennsylvania to Tennessee seeking a suitable place to settle & thoroughly enjoying his nomadic freedom. Through some misadventure, he lost his way & all his possessions including his survive-or-die flintlock rifle. That was not a very healthy situation - with Indians lurking everywhere, who were taking an increasinly-dim view of the invading hordes of whites - & with no way to slay game for a growling stomach.
Just about to give up in despair, Van Bibber spotted smoke curling skyward from what could only have been a chimney. He was certain it was no Indian campfire.
Charging through the underbrush, joy of joys, he found a pioneer cabin which was little more than a lean-to. Whooping & hollering - in English so he wouldn't be shot for an Indian - he greeted the inhabitant, who welcomed him only as a lonioneer & hospitable Southerners can do. The man introduced himselft as Dan Boone, who fed & bedded Van Bibber, beginning a friendship lasting for decades.
Finally, Van Bibber felt he must take his leave, & Boone loaded him up with light trail food, probably including jerky & rockahominy, or parched corn, such as the Indians used, & forced upon him, against his protests, one of his prized flins. It was a beautiful piece, with carved wood stock & fancy brass plating, plus a silver sight made by gunsmith, Michael Kimberlin, of whom research disappointingly fails to turn up any record.
It is entirely probable that several of Chief Cornstalk's braves on the other end of it said, "Ow, that smarts," since the piece had a bore of about 60 caliber.
John later passed the now-famous Van Bibber rifle to his son, Mathias (Mathias was not a son of john, but a nephew through brother Peter) reputed to have been one of the 1st sheriffs of Kanawha County, who scratched his monogram in the brasck plate.

John & Peter Van Bibber settled in 1781 on the bank of the Ohio river, just below the mouth of the Great Kanawha. Their sister, Brigetta, who had married Isaac Robinson, lived on the north side of the Kanawha, near the mouth of Crooked Creek, now Point Pleasant.
It was only a few weeks after the murder of Rhoda Van Bibber that Indians attacked the Robinsons at their home. Isaac Robinson, a man who was helping him with the farm work, & a baby boy some 2 years old, were slain. The house was burned,igetta & 2 sons were taken prisoners. The older boy, Isaac, was about 8 & John some 4 years old. The latter, unable to stand the strain of rapid travel, was slain by the Indians & his little body was left by the roadside where his father's brother, John Robinson, found it a few days later. Two days & 2 nights, without resting, the prisoners were forced to march & though he tried, Robinson could not overtake them.
One night after a long day's march & before the Indians had reached their destination, somewhere in the vicinity of Detroit, Brigetta Robinson gave birth to a child. Carrying the little one in her arms, she was compelled to keep on the mare next & several other succeeding days. Then the Indians thought the babe too great a burden for the weakened woman, so they beat its head against a tree, threw the body at her feet & left it there as prey for the wild beast as they kept on their way.
Mrs. Robinson was kept for 5 years in virtual slavery before a French trader bought her release & sent her back to her girlhood home in Botetourt County, Virginia. Meanwhile, Isaac had been carried away to some other habitation of the trio she had to leave him behind, when she started for her old home.
But, 3 years later, during a period of peace between the Indians & the whites, this woman of iron nerve started back to hunt for her son. Two of her children had been brutally killed before her eyes, a 3rd was held a captive by the Indiansr heart yearned for him. In one of the Indian villages where she sought him, smallpox was raging & taking its prey by thousands, & she was stricken. It was many months before she could go on, & she too had to make her temporary home among the Indians.
After his 8 years of life among the wild tribe of Indians, she found her son, Isaac, so weaned away from civilization that he refused to return to the white habitations & all the restrictions of convential life. But, the heroic mother finaon him over after weeks of persuasion, she induced her son to return with her to Point Pleasant. There his health gave way & he lived but a few years, though his mother, Brigetta Van Bibber, born of heroic mold, lived until almost a hundred years of age, & delighted in telling the descendants of her brothers the stories of her early adventures.

March 1983: James and Esther?s daughter Hester m. Vachel Dillingham ca. 1765 in Halifax or Pittsylvania Co., Va. They are said to have moved to N.C. with relations of Hester.

In Washington Co. and Sullivan Co. N.C. I find land grants to Vachel and next to his land Stephen and William Rentfro. In the same general area I find grants to James, Joseph, Peter, Isaac and Moses. This area later became a part of Tennessee. Vachel and Hesters son went back to that area and settled.

In 1765 James Rentfro deeded land in Halifax Co. to Vachel Dillingham who was later recorded in Pittsylvania Co. then even later in Franklin Co. They did not move it was only the counties which changed. They were just east of the Blue Ridge, south of the Roanoke River.

{There is mention of Vachel Dillingham and wife Hester's moving from North Caroliona to Eastern Tennessee and Kentucky with some of her relatives}

Isaac's son, John, owned 3250 acres in Claiborne County. His father-in-law was killed by Indians. John was a Lieutenant of the Russell County, Tennessee militia in 1786 and was appointed Captain of a company in Powell Valley in the state militia by the governor. He was instrumental in organizing Claiborne County in 1801 and was its first Justice of the Peace. He was also Justice of the Peace in Granger County.

Isaac Jr. married Boones granddaughter, Elizabeth Hay, who is generally recognized as the first white child born in Kentucky. He became wealthy operating a health spa with hotels and cabins in Montgomery County, Missouri.
During the Indian wars, at age 13, Isaac Jr. served as a scout against the Indians in Virginia and was appointed a Major of the militia under Colonel Boone during the Indian wars. During the War of 1812, he was a spy for Major Dodge.
Isaac Jr. was an eccentric man. An interesting story about Isaac Jr. was told in the Missouri Historical Review: "Isaac Van Bibber was very eccentric. He omitted no opportunity to declare and enforce his belief that every six thousand yearsre was a recurrence of the same events in the worlds history, and of course, in the history of its inhabitants. He was active and persistent in the defense of this peculiar philosophy. One morning three young Kentuckians, having spent the night at the tavern and having heard Van Bibber's philosophy boldly declared, concluded to subject his professed faith to a business test.
Accordingly, they said, Now, Mr. Van Bibber, you believe we will all be here again, just as we are now, six thousand years hence. To test your belief in this doctrine we propose to give you our joint note for the amount of our bills, at teent interest, payable six thousand years after date. For a moment Van Bibber was in an embarrassing dilemma, but soon recovering, he replied, You are smart young fellows all the way from old Kaintuck, and I would at once accept your note and let you keep on, but I remember that all three of you were here six thousand years ago and left without paying your bills, and now I am afraid to trust you. So you will have to shell out. And shell out they did.

Isaac married Elizabeth Hays in 1797 in Kentucky. Elizabeth (daughter of William Hays and Susannah Boone) was born on 12 Jun 1776 in Fort Boonesborough, Kentucky; died on 3 Aug 1828. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Matthias was friends with famous frontiersman Daniel Boone and named one of his children after him. He went with Boone to Missouri but soon returned east. Matthias uncle, Peter, was appointed guardian of Matthias, along with some of Isaacs other children, on 11-24-1774, after Isaac died at the battle of Point Pleasant on 10-10-1774. Some researchers believe that Peter was the genetic father of Matthias. Also, some researchers believe Matthias wife, Margaret to be the daughter of David Robinson and Miriam Hamilton.

Matthias sons were well-known citizens of Nicholas County. Matthias is buried on the old Van Bibber farm, now owned by the heirs of Frank Grose, in Nicholas County.

In our "Reminiscences, No. 1," we spoke of Peter Van Bibber, as one of the first half dozen settlers in Lawrence County, and who built a cabin in 1798, below Union Landing. The next year, 1799, James and Jacob Van Bibber, brothers of Peter, settled and built cabins just below the mouth of Ice Creek. The Van Bibbers were from the Kanawha.
Jacob afterwards settled and lived for many years on Little Sandy; and we suppose died there.

During the Indian wars, while the Van Bibber family was living on Kanawha, James and Jacob, then small boys, went out to hunt their horse, in the "range." A bell had been put on the horse, but as it appears two Indians had taken the bell off, and used it as a decoy; they jingled and the boys followed and finally they sprung upon the boys. One of them seized Jacob, but James, the older, darted from the other Indian, and ran so fast that he escaped. Jacob was taken to the Indian towns as a prisoner. Some years afterwards the Indians were hunting on Raccoon, within the present limits of Gallia County, and had young Van Bibber along. At one time they sent him out for their horses and becoming lost he wandered to the bank of the Raccoon, which he knew would lead him to the Ohio, when he conceived the idea of returning home. He came to the Ohio, and a boat soon appeared, coming down. Those it were afraid of his being an Indian decoy, but
finally, after his telling who he was, etc., they landed their women on the Virginia side and went over for him. Once on the Virginia shore he soon made his way to his home on Kanawha. Some years afterward, the young Van Bibbers settled in Lawrence County, as before mentioned.

There was a rumor that the Indians in years before had buried treasure at the Rock. To get whisky the Indian favored this rumor. For a glass he would tell them where to look, but it would always happen that they did not look just at the right place, but for another glass he would tell them the exact spot and so on. On one occasion while hunting for the treasure they found an Indian's bones, two thick bars of copper and a shell drinking cup under a rock near where Z. Hall now lives; at another time they found another Indian's bones under a rock near the same place. At last the Indian told them to go higher up and they would find a tree with certain marks on it, and there they would find the sought for riches. And sure enough they did find a tree, a buckeye with the marks the Indians had made on it some years before; this tree stood at the foot of the hill just above where the rolling mill now stands. For this the Indian got a double drink; but no treasure was yet to be found. The Indian then thinking that he had got about all the whisky he could, was all at once among the missing.

After leaving below, the Indian, as it appears, went up to the cabins of the Van Bibbers, below Ice Creek. He told the Van Bibbers that he was going to Kanawha, and they replied they used to live there. The Indian said he had been there before. "I tell you," said he, "so you see Indian no lie. Indian was there with another Indian, and two
little boys came hunt horse. We took bell off horse and lied with it to boys and when we got 'em 'bout right we jump at 'em, but my boy flew like bird and me no catch him." "Why, law me," exclaimed old lady Van Bibber, "that was you, James." The Indian seeing that he had exposed himself kept silence, and began to look for the door. James
Van Bibber laughed, and told him that it was peace and that he would not hurt him. The Indian, however, was ill at ease, and would not utter a syllable. They coaxed him to stay all night, but long before daylight, he got up and went out, the last seen of him.

Rhoda, the attractive daughter of John Van Bibber, 19 years of age & possessed of an abundant suit of auburn hair, was killed by Indians in 1787 & her brother, Joseph, was taken prisoner. The girl was scalped & her scalp with its long red hair was taken to Detroit & the British commander of the fort there paid the Indians a bounty of $60 for it. Joseph said afterwards that he saw many barrels filled with scalps of women & children during the years of his captivity.

Last I heard, Cole researchers had not been able to place Elizabeth, but I think you're right that she probably was Solomon's sister, both being children of James Cole II and Mary Rentfroe. The reason I think so is because James and Benjamin's father owned land on/near Cole's Creek in MS Territory, giving the kiddies probable opportunity to get acquainted.
The fact that Elizabeth is listed as being from Lancaster Co, PA & SC. & Solomon from NC - more reason to think that she was James II's and Mary Rentfroe's little girl. James II was born in DE, baptized in PA at age 2, married Mary in VA,d briefly in NC, relocated to SC, and then made an extraordinary voyage of around 1,500 miles by river boat from northeastern TN to MS Territory. Depending on when Elizabeth was born, her birth place could have been VA, NC, or SC.

Carole thinks that Elizabeth's father is a James, but she & her siblings would have been adults by 1788. Who is this James?

Solomon Cole, son of James Cole and Mary Rentfroe was born about 1760 in Ashpole Swamp, Bladen County, North Carolina. The family moved to "Natchez Country," Mississippi in 1772. They located at "Coles Creek," named for our Cole ancestors. Her, Solomon married Elizabeth Davis, widow of Charles Simmons. They had two sons named James Simmons and David D. Simmons (Black Dave). Solomon Cole received a Spanish Land Grant claim #756 of 200 acres, situated on the waters of Coles Creek, Natchez District dated: 4 January 1794. On 12 February 1778, Solomon Cole bought from his brother, Stephen Cole, 300 arpents of land on Coles Creek, for $150.00. A Spanish Grant #1380, donated to Stephen Cole. One month later Solomon Conveyed the 300 arpents to William Thomas for the sum of $600.00, making a nice profit. On February 7, 1804, Solomon and Elizabeth Cole sold their home, the original Spanish Grant #756 of 200 acres to Buckner Darden for $400.00. They moved their family from Coles Creek to St. Landry Parish, Louisiana in 1804. Solomon and his brother James located land on the Plaquemine Brulee. Solomon acquired 529 acres from Isaac Johnson, the original claimant. It was situated on the stream and bounded on the North by James Cole's land grant.

Solomon Cole served as a Police Juror (Justice of the Peace) in St. Landry Parish from 1811 to 1818. He later moved to a vacherie at Prairie Soileau. "When James and Solomon Cole moved from Coles Creek, Mississippi in 1804, they joined former neighbors by names of: Hayes, King, Forman, Simmons, McClelland, Reeves, Bilbo and Roberts. They all settled on each side of the Plaquemine Brulee stream in St. Landry Parish. James Cole was the original claimant by settlement and occupancy of 400 acres. Solomon Cole acquired his 529 acre Spanish Grant from Isaac Johnson, the original grantee. A tributary of Bayou Plaquemine Brulee ran through both James and Solomon's land, named Coles Bayou or Gulley. A certain location was known as Coles Cove. This area was also, "Coles Settlement," since that was the name of the first Post Office established in 1832. Evidently, this Post Office was located on the Solomon Cole land, some five miles north and east of present Crowley, Louisiana. Abraham Cole, son of Solomon was appointed postmaster, January 24, 1938. Two persons who gave bond were Jacob Simmons and William Forman, son-in-law of Solomon Cole. James Cole sold to Malachi Stanton, "a certain tract of land, situated in St. Landry Parish at a place called, Tasse Point, on a Gulley [Coles) of Plaquemine Brulee, containing 400 acres and being in the Western District of the Territory of Orleans, no State of Louisiana...in consideration of the sum of $350.00"

The Coles probably, started moving westward in St. Landry Parish after this date of 1821. Solomon Cole died in 1825 and his Succession papers read, "Judge George King went to the Cole Vacherie [small ranch) in Prairie Soileau on Beaver Creek to make an Inventory of the estate." Our intermarried families of Cole, Forman and Simmons are found together in the 1830 Census of St. Landry Parish in the area of "Bayou Dubonne," 60 miles southwest of Opelousas. This is the western part of the Parish cut off for Calcasieu after selling his grant on the Plaquemine Brulee is not known.

The Court House was burned down and all records were destroyed in Lake Charles in 1910. We cannot check deeds, marriages, conveyances, and probates for our Cole, Forman and Simmons families. The relationship of Solomon's family is established by his Succession Papers filed in Opelousas Court Records. Named is Elizabeth Cole, widow of the deceased, James Cole, a son, James Forman, a son-in-law is requested to "tutor" his minor son, "Stephen Cole," Stephens portion of his father's estate was left in the care of his Uncle James Cole Sr., half-brother, David Simmons, and his brother-in-law William Forman.

The Solomon Cole land was purchased by William Forman with the "reservations that, the widow, Elizabeth Cole and son Stephen Cole were to live on the 'home place." Other children of Solomon Cole were not named in the St. Landry Parish records but, we can identify those who married from the Bonds.

Solomon received a Spanish Land Grant, Claim #756 of 200 acres, situated on the waters of Coles Creek, Natchez District on January 4, 1794.
On February 7, 1804, Solomon and Elizabeth Cole sold their home, the original Spanish grant #756 of 200 acres to Buchner Darden for $400. They moved their family from Coles Creek to St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. Solomon and his brother Jamle, located on land on the Plaquemine Brulee St. Landry Parish. Solomon Cole acquired 529 acres from Isaac Johnson, the original grantee.

The following explanation of the Plaquemine Brulee, St. Landry, Louisiana is taken from "Cole Footprints".
"The name PLAGUEMINE BRULEE is descriptive of the region, meaning burnt Persimine. The word Plaquemine is translated as the fruit of the Persimine tree; and Brulee was used by the Acadian settlers to describe fields burnt over for cleaninh spring. Voila! PLAQUEMINE BRULEE. It is also, the name of a well known stream of water, which covers Southern St. Landry Parish with tributaries of gulleys and bayous. This land area was important to the early settlement of Southwestern Louisiana.

Spanish explorers sailing along the Gulf coast as early as 1519 found the mouth of the mighty Mississippi River. They established Colonies and Forts. It was the French explorer, Robert Cavelier La Salle who claimed for France in 1682, ae land drained by the river and its tributaries. He named the territory, "Louisiana" in honor of King Louie XIV. Louis J. St. Denis founded the first permanent settlements at Natchitoches in 1714, and at New Orleans in 1718. After the Seven Year War in 1763, France ceded Canada and all of the Louisiana Province east of the the Mississippi to England (except the Isle of Orleans). By a secret treaty with Spain, France had ceded all her land west of the Mississippi and Orleans to that country. From his military might, Napolean forced Spain to give Louisiana back to France in 1800. His dream for a French Colonial Empire failed, and in 1803 Napolean sold the Louisiana Territory to the United States for $15,000,000.

During the French regime two Indian Trading Posts were established in the Southwestern section of the Territory, Poste des Attakapas and Poste des Opelousas. Both named for Indian Tribes who lived in the area. Post des Opelousas includet is now St. Landry, Acadia, Allen, Calcasieu, Beauregard Cameron, Jefferson and Evangeline Parishes. Some Anglo-Americans bought land from Indian Chiefs as early as 1780; others received Spanish Land Grants, until the Territory became United States property. She then granted land to Protestants as well as many Acadian families who moved into the area.

A petition from Elizabeth Cole, widow, asks that the community be sold at public sale on July 1, 1825, and that a family council be appointed to provide a tutor for Stephen Cole who is under the age of puberty. She signs with a mark. Wae a Cole, married a Cole??? Elizabeth is appointed the natural tutor.
Attending the family council are James Cole Sr., uncle; David Simmons, half brother; James Cole, Jr., his brother; William Forman his brother-in-law and James Simmons, a friend in lieu of a family member. William Forman was appointed undert. David Simmons signs, as do William Forman and James Simmons; James Cole Jr. makes a mark.

1. Nancy Vanbeber (this is the way it is written in family Bible belonging to Charles C. Renfro), daughter of John & Peggy Vanbeber Nov. 20, 1806, married William Renfro, son of James and Charity Renfro.

Nancy was the daughter of John Vanbeber and Margaret (Peggy) Chrisman, according to my information. I think they were married in Knox Co., KY, later were in TN for a short while and moved in 1834 to Boone Co., MO. I have information on their descendants if anyone needs it.

2. I am still seeking confirmation of a marriage between a James Renfro and Esther Van Bibber. They were in various counties in VA in the mid to late 1700's and both died in Barren Co. KY. I have very little information on this couple.

I Isaac YOAKUM do make and publish this
my last will and testament hereby
revokig and making void all other
Wills by me at any time made

First I direct that my funeral expenses
and all my debts be paid as soon after any
death as posable out of any money that
I may die possessed of or that may first
come in to the hands of my executors

Secondly I give and bequath to my son
George YOAKUM the lower part of my
plantation whare I now live beginning
at the valla Road near the gate at the Pond
thence with the fence near the Barn to a
cross fence on the north of the barn then
with the cross fence down the valla to
oposid the east fence of the peach orchord
thence with Said fence then a Strate line
a cross the rige to a northern cross fence
running with that cross to the new road

Third I bequeath to my son Marcelus
YOAKUM the land whare I now live beginning
at the valla road on the ROOT tract, and neer
the house whare John TREESE now livs and with
a row of Peach Trees until it coms oposit to
a fence that runs up and down the vally thence
eastward with Said fence to the line that was
between MOSS and ROOT before I Bought from
them then with a new fence that I made neer
the line to the new road. Then all the land
on the South Side of the road tract to the River
I wish to have equally divided between George
and Marcellis YOAKUM for the benafit
of the timber to Both their farms.

Fourth I Bequeath to my Son Thomas
YOAKUM Beginning at the valla road at a
corner near the blacksmith shop thence down the
road near near John TREESES house to the line
dissignated as Marcilliseus line thence with Marcel=
=las Said line to the MOSS line or the new fence
spoken of thence with Marcellases to the new
road thence eastwardly with said road to then
dry lot line with said line Northwardly
to the valey road thence with said road to the
Beginning then I wish the balance of MOSS
tract south of the new road to the river
divided equally between Thomas YOAKUM
and Aaron YOAKUM for the timber to both
their farms

Fifth. I bequeath next to my son Aaron
YOAKUM the land he now lives on beginning
on the valy road thence northward with the
dry lot line and with the courses of my deed
so as to incluse all the lands I have on the
North side of the valley road then I wish to
divide the sugar hollow land on Powells river
equally between Geroge and Marcellas and Thomas
and Aaron YOAKUM.

Sixth. Next I bequeath to my son John
YOAKUM one thousand dollars of which
amount he has received five hundred dollars

Seventh next I bequeath to my son Moses
YOAKUM also one thousand dollrs of which
amount he has received five hundred dollars

Eighth I next bequeath to my daughter
Betty Elizabeth VAN BEBBER also one thousand
dollars of which amount she has received
five hundred dollars all to be paid when
or as soon as that amount is made out of any
property after my death and if there should
not be property sufficient to make said fifteen
hundred dollars then in that case George
Marcellas Thomas and Aaron the four that
got the land must equally pay each there portion to
make the balance of any shall lack

Ninth. I next bequeath to my son William
YOAKUM one thousand dollars which is to be
paid out of my estate after my death and it is my wish to
have the above amount placed in the hands
of a guardian to be paid to him as he may
need it as I think he would waste it and not
make a proper use of it I therefore wish to
appoint Isaac THOMAS as his guardian signed
sealed and delivered and acknowledged in
the presence of this the 23rd day of April 1853 his

Gunsmith

. . . Joseph Van Bibber, was born in Greenbriar county, Virginia, in 1797 and was but three years old when brought by his parents to Callaway county, Missouri, and was, therefore, reared in this state, recei ved a common education and was a gunsmith by trade and employed by the United States government at Liberty, Missouri, when there was an Indian agency at that point. He married in St. Charles county, Missouri, Susan Boone, a daughter of Nathan and Olive (Van Bibber) Boone.
. . . After his marriage Joseph Van Bibber lived at Liberty until 1832, when he went to Arkansas and settled in Randolph county, in the wilderness, and was one of the first settlers in that county, and was one of the
surveyors who laid out the tow n of Pocahontas, the county-seat of that county, and there he died at the age of forty-two years, and his wife died a few years previously. They were the parents of four children who lived to
grow up, namely: Letitia, James D., Sarah and Emulus C.
