Whitman, FLH #038364, they have John married to Ann, daughter of Thomas Moreton of Croton in Warwickshire. And listed their children as John, Theodore, Edward, and Elizabeth. He sold the manor of Wykin and removed to Hinckley.

He was a minister of the Six-Principle Baptist Church, which later became the faith of the first church founded in Rhode Island and the first Baptist church organized in America, the oldest First Baptist Church of Providence, 1638. Being a no-conformist of the radical wing, the separatists, he was pesecuted, and twice burned for his religious views, 9 March 1612 and 11 April 1612. On the last date, he was by order of James I, burned to death in Manchuet Place, Lichfield, in Staffordshire, being the last of the religious martyrs in England to be so destroyed.

My 10g grandfather, Edward Wightman, has the rather unenvied distinction of being the last of the religious martyrs in England to be burned at the stake. He was a Separatist (the same religion as the Mayflower passengers followed), which did not go over well with the Church of England, the ONLY accepted religion of England back in the early 1600's.

Preaching his "heresies" quickly got the attention of the authorities, including King James I himself, who issued the order for his execution. On the appointed date, Edward was taken to the stake, tied up, and set on fire. Immediately he started screaming (can't imagine WHY) and shouting out unintelligible words. For some strange reason, the townsfolk and the sheriffs got it into their heads that he was recanting his religious beliefs, so they quickly doused out the flames, untied him and cooled him off.

Once released, he continued to preach his heresies even more strongly than before, so a few days later they tied him back to the stake, and THIS time burned him to ashes. [One of my friends upon hearing this story dubbed him my "twice-baked" ancestor.]

The following is a copy of the written order issued by the King for the death of Edward Wightman. The language alone is worth a giggle.

"The King to the sheriff of our city of Litchfield, Greeting. Whereas, the reverend father in Christ, Richard, by divine providence, of Coventry and Litchfield, Bishop, hath signified unto us, that he judicially proceeding, according to the exigence of ecclesiastical canons and of the laws and customs of this kingdon of Burton-upon-Trent, in the diocese of Coventry and Litchfield, of and upon the wicked heresies of Ebion, Cirinthus, Valintian, Arrius, Macedonius, Simon, Magnus, of Manes, Manichees, Photinus, and of the Anabaptists, and other arch-heriticks; and moreover of other cursed opinions, belched by the instance of Satan, excogitated and here to forunheard of; the aforesaid Edward Wightman appearing before the aforesaid reverend father, and other divines and learned in the law, assisting him in judgment, the aforesaid wicked crimes, heresies and other detestable blasphemies and errors, stubbornly and perniciously, knowingly and maliciously, and with a hardened heart, published, defended and dispersed, by definite sentence of the said divine father, with the consent of divines, learned in the law aforesaid, justly, lawfully and canonically, against the said Edward Wightman in that part brought, stands adjudged and pronounced a heretick, and therefore as a diseased sheep out of the flock of the Lord, lest our subjects he do infect by his contagion, he hath decreed to be cast out, and cut off. Whereas, the holy mother church hath not further in this part what it ought more to do and prosecute, the same reverend father hath left to our secular power the same Edward Wightman as a blasphemous and condemned heritick to be punished with the condign punishment as by the letters patent of the aforesaid reverend father, the bishop of Coventry and Litchfield, in this behalf thereupon made, as certified unto us in our Chancery. We, therefore, as the zealot of justice and the defender of the Catholick faith, and williing the holy church, and the rights and liberties of the same, and the Catholick faith to maintain and defend, and such like heresies and errors everywhere, so convict and condemn to punish with consign punishment, holding that such a heritick in the aforesaid form convicted and condemned, according to the customs and laws of this our Kingdom of England in this part accustomed, out to be burned with fire. We command thee that thou cause the said Edward Wightman, being in thy custody, to be committed to fire in some publick and open place below the city aforesaid, for the cause aforesaid before people; and the same Edward Wightman in the same fire cause really to be burned in destation of said crime, and for the manifest example of other Christians, that they may not fall into the same crime. And this no ways omit, under the peril that shall follow thereon."

(2) Edward Wightman, born on 20 December 1566 in Burbage, Leicestershire, England, died 9 March 1612 in Lichfield, Staffordshire, England. He married Francis Darbye.
Edward was a minister of the Six-Principle Baptist Church, which later became the faith of the first church founded in Rhode Island and the first Baptist church organized in America, the old First Baptist Church of Providence, founded 16hich Roger Williams was founder.
Being a non-conformist of the radical wing, the Separatists, he was destined to be persecuted. In the Spring of 1611 he was condemned to burn at the stake in the following Spring on the 9th March 1612, this through awarrant issued by Ki. The drawing at right is an artist's rendering of Edward's burning in the Market Square.
Edward was reportedly the last person punished in such a manor in England.

And that, that place of Isaiah, 'I alone, have trodden the winepress;' and that place, 'Whose fan is in his hand,' are proper and personal to him, the said Edward Wightman.
And that he the said Wightman is that person of the Holy Ghost spoken of in the Scriptures; and the Comforter spoken of in the 16th of St. John's Gospel.
And that those words of our Savior Christ of the Sin of Blasphemy against the Holy Ghost, are meant of his person.
And that, that place, the fourth of Malachi, of Elias to come, is likewise meant of his person.
That the soul doth sleep in the sleep of the first death, as well as the body, and is mortal as touching the sleep of the first death, as the body is; and that the soul of our Savior Jesus Christ did sleep in that sleep of death as well as his body.
That the souls of the elect saints departed, are not members possessed of the triumphant Church in Heaven.
That the baptizing of infants is an abominable custom.

That God hath ordained and sent him, the said Edward Wightman, to perform his part in the work of the Salvation of the world, to deliver it by his teaching, or admonition, from the heresy of the Nicolaitanes; as Christ was ordained and sent to save the world, and by his death to deliver it from sin, and to reconcile it to God.
And that Christianity is not wholly professed and preached in the Church of England, but only in part.

John with four of his five sons, his wife probably having died in England, reached Newport in Rhode Island in 1654 and made their way to Richard Smith's trading post at Wickford in the Narragansett country, where Valentine Whiteman, eldest son of John, had been employed for six years as an interpreter to the Indians. In the Quidnesset section, shortly North of Wickford, he, along with his youngest son George, purchased land from Richard Smith and setted on a farm tract there.

This will in no doubt, explain why the father, John, and his other sons arrived in Newport and immediately went to the Wickford area of Rhode Island."
Probably came to America in 1648, since he had been employed for six years at Richard Smith's trading post at Wickford in the Narragansett country when his father and four of his brothers joined him.

Of Valentine Whitman, Savage says ?he was much employed as an Indian interpreter.? The first mention I find of him upon the records is a sale by him to Henry Fowler, April 28, 1654, of a 5 acre lot near Waybasett north of the highway. Jan. 28, 1655, he bought a parcel of meadow and 25 acres of upland of Robert Coles at Mashapaug; and, Aug. 27,1656, of John Greene, Sen., a house lot lying between the lot of William Harris on the north and Edward Manton on the south, which was confirmed by Philip Greene, widow of John, May 13, 1659. He was admitted a freeman of Providence, May 18, 1658. His name is also attached to an agreement, dated October 18, 1654, between the United Colonies and Ninegret, and upon the list of those who stayed in Providence through Phillip?s war. His death is thus recorded : ? Valentine Whittman Senior, of this Towne of Providence died the 26?11 day of January 1701 about the breakeing of ye day or a little before, as his Son Valentine Whittman Gives an account.? He married Elizabeth Updike in Quidnessett, Kings Co, Rhode Island about 1663.
Family Bible: George Wightman bible, printed in London by John Wolfe in 1587 is now owned by Mr. George W. Wightman of Brookline, Massachusetts. Soon after reaching Rhode Island, he, with his father, settled on a farm tract in the Quidnesset ction, purchasing the land from Richard Smith. After 59 years of wedded life, he and his wife died early in the year 1722. There are numerous records of his activities in the colony, and the town, where he was member of the council for many years, and in the old family burial ground on his farm, he and his wife and many of their posterity are buried, a huge boulder, suitably inscribed having been placed there since 1919 by their descendants.

George Wightman was born November 4, 1632 in England (possibly London) and died 7 Jan 1721/2 in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. He married Elizabeth Updike, daughter of Gilbert and Katherine (Smith) Updike. Upon arrival to Rhode Island in 1654, they settled on a farm located on a tract that was purchased from Richard Smith in the Quidnesset section, north of Wickford near North Kingstown where they reared a family of five sons and three daughters. The land they purchased was handed down intact through six generations and was known for more than two hundred years as the Wightman Homestead.

During this time as Rhode Island was being settled, there were some land disputes among the various Companys, much confusion over property titles, and much difficulty for all settlers in Kings Province regarding their political allegiance. In 1669 George Wightman and others were arrested and taken to Hartford, CT because of their allegiance to the government of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. They were kept in jail some time.

On 25 July 1670 George Wightman appears assisting a neighbor, Samuel Dyer, witnessing an agreement on the part of Samuel Dyer and Henry Dyer "sons of William Dyer" to pay to their sister, Mary Dyer, "eldest daughter of William Dyer" £100 within three years. In 1671 an Oath of Allegiance was taken by those adhering to the jurisdiction of Rhode Island. George Wightman was among the number. On 6 May 1673 the Assembly elected George Wightman (together with others) freeman of Kings Province.

On 29 July 1679 George Wightman and forty-one others of Narragansett petitioned the King praying he "would put an end to these differences about the government thereof which has been so fatal to the prosperity of the place, animosities still arising in people's minds as they stand affected to this or that government." In 1686 George was elected Constable.

On 6 March 1687/8, Court met at Rochester "upon complaint to this court made by Robert Spink and others of the town of Rochester that several highways in said town are stopped up - it is ordered that the highway which leads from George Wightman's to the country road and comes out to the said road between the land of James Reynolds and John Briggs be forthwith laid open." On 14 September 1687 Court sitting at Rochester, members of the Grand Jury were sworn, George Wightman being one of the number.

The land records from Kingston (Town Hall at Wickford) do not begin until 1686. That George Wightman had acquired several parcels of land before that date is evident from later conveyances in his name as grantor and from his will. The deed to the Quidnessett homestead bears the date of May 1682 and the deed itself is kept in the town book. He possessed lands totalling some 2,000 acres. His "Great Bible", printed in 1587 in London is now owned by a direct descendant of his oldest grandson, George Wightman, to whom he himself bequeathed it.

The will of George Wightman of Quidnessett, dated 26 April 1716, was presented for probate on 2 February 1722. The record of the will and codicil is now only partly legible. On 16 December 1870 an attempt to rob the bank at Wickford in which the town records for North Kingstown were kept, resulted in an explosion and fire in which the books were badly damaged. Not only were the margins of the pages charred and broken, but some pages were scorched entirely clean, and many pages are gone. Fortunately, George Wightman's will was transcribed from the town book by a Wightman descendant before the robbery.

To all Christian people before whom these presents shall come, I, George Wightman of Kingston, in the colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations in New England...

Know ye that the aforesaid George Wightman being aged and grown very weak in body yet through the mercy of God at present I have my perfect understanding Praised be God for it But not knowing how soon it may please God to call me out of this world, do make, ordaine and declare this Instrument in writing to be my last will and Testament in manner and form following, hereby revoking and making void all other Will or Wills by me heretofore made either by word or Writing.

Imprimis. I commit my soul to Almighty God and to my everblessed Savior, Jesus Christ, through whose merits and precious blood I hope to obtain the foregiveness of all my sins, and to obtain eternal life in the world to come, and my body to be buried in a decent manner by my Executor. And as to my outward and temporal Estate which the Lord has given me, I do hereby order, bequeath and dispose of as is Hereinafter mentioned.

Item. My will is that all my debts be truly and duly paid by my executor or Executors hereinafter mentioned in convenient time after my decease.

Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Daniel Wightman and the heirs lawfully begotten of his body, forever, all my farm and homestead herein at Quitnessit, with my house and barn and outhouses, orchards, fences, rights and privileges and appurtenances to the farm belonging or in any way appertaining (together) with the land I bought of James Green of Quitnessit also (to) be and remain unto the heirs lawfully begotten of his body Forever.

As for my son George Wightman, I have given him all the money which I had for the farm at Matunuck for to buy the farm where he, my son George Wightman now dwells.

It is my will, although the deed of sale be made in my son George Wightman's name that the said farm and house, outhouses with all privileges and appurtenances to the same belonging or in any way appertaining to be and remain unto my son George Wightman, and the heirs lawfully begotten of his body forever.

Item. I give and bequeath to my son John Wightman three hundred acres of land where he now dwells with the house, outhouses, fences, orchards, rights, privileges and appurtenances to the same belonging or in any way appertaining to be and remain unto my said son John Wightman and the heirs lawfully begotten of his body forever.

Item. I give and bequeath to my son Samuel Wightman, Four Hundred acres of land which I bought of the committee of the colony of Rhode Island with the houses, outhouses, orchards and fences, rights and privilegs and appurtenances to the same belonging or in any ways appertaining to be and remain to my son Samuel Wightman and the heirs lawfully begotten of his body forever.

Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Valentine Wightman all the land I bought of Joseph Doliver Jun., deceased, the number of acres and bounds of the lands is mentioned in the deed of sale together with the privileges and appurtenances to the same belonging or in any way appertaining to be and remain to my son Valentine Wightman and to the heirs lawfully begotten of his body forever.

Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Daniel Wightman the remaining part of my land upon the great plain, bounded southerly upon the land of William Browning and Mr. Sewal, westerly upon the land of my son John Wightman, northerly upon the land belonging to the Gardners, easterly to the Hills, with the rights, privileges and appurtenances to the same belonging or in any ways appertaining to be and remain unto my son Daniel, and the heirs lawfully begotten of his body forever. I give also to my son Daniel my log chain, four chain boxes and two pairs of snip bits, one shear and colter cider mill, iron bar and grindestone to remain upon said farm and homestead for the use thereof.

Item. I give unto my son George Wightman 20 shillings in money, and forty shillings to his three sons to be equally divided between them.

Item. I give and bequeath to my son John Wightman 20 pounds in money and the worsted Combs.

Item. It give unto my son John's daughter Aylice my chest of drawers. Item. I give unto my son Samuel Wightman Twenty pounds in money.

Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Valentine Wightman, Forty pounds in money and Twenty shillings apiece to his three sons Daniel, Valentine and Abraham Wightman.

Item. I give and bequeath to my Grandson George Wightman, the son of my son Daniel Wightman, ten pounds in money, my silver hat band, gun, and all my wearing clothes, both woolen and linen, my chest also which I brought out of England, and my great bible, and to the other two children of my son Daniel Wightman I give fifty shillings apiece, that is Daniel and Elizabeth Wightman.

Item. I give and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth Huling twenty pounds in money.

Item. I give and bequeath to my daughter Aylice Weight thirty pounds in money.

Item. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sarah Peterson twenty pounds in money.

Item. I give and bequeath to my son Valentine Wightman, my silver drinking cup and my (other?) chest which I brought out of England. Item. I give to my son John Wightman's two sons twenty shillings apiece. There is due me from John Moss five pounds in money by bill.

Item. I give forty shillings of it to my friend Richard Sweet, and twenty shillings of it to buy bread and wine for the congregation to celebrate the Lord's Supper, the other forty shillings of it I give to my said friend John Moss.

Item. I give and bequeath to my friend John Fones forty shillings in money to be paid to him by my executors.

Item. It is my desire that all my dear children would endeavor to be contented with what I have given them and take all things according to the true intent and meaning herein and my desire is that you would endeavor to live in the fear of God, and live in peace among yourselves, and the peace of God will be with you. Farewell.

Item. My will is and I do constitute and appoint my two sons Daniel and Valentine Wightman to be my executors to this my last Will and testament and I desire my friend John Fones to aid and assist them as an Overseer to this my will, and the true intent and my will is that my within named executors shall pay all my legacies which I have given to my children so far as my estate shall be found to go, but if there shall not be enough of my estate, then my children shall all of them abate of the legacies according to proportion.

And for the ratification and confirmation of this my last will and testament I set my hand and seal this 26th day of April, A.D. 1716 and in the 2nd year of the reign of George, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland....

Capt. Valentine Whitman, Jun., lived in that part of the town afterward called Smithfield, and the first meeting for the organization of the new town was held in his house, March 17, 1730.
There was another Valentine Wightman or Whitman born in NOrth Kingstown, 1681, who organized the first Baptist Church at Groton, Conn., and also in New York city. The similarity of the names leads to the belief that they were of the same family and descendants of Edward Wightman, who was burned for heresy at Litchfield, England, in 1612.

(5) John Wightman, born 16 April 1674 in North Kingstown, Washington Co., Rhode Island, died about April 1750 in Exeter, Washington Co., Rhode Island. He married Jane Bentley, born in 1683 in Kingston, Rhode Island. Jane was the daughter ofilliam Bentley, a currier, who had come from England on the ship Arabella, sailing from Gravesend on 27 May 1671. William died in 1720. Her mother's family name may have been Leithfield.
John Wightman, yeoman, lived on the so-called Great Plaine in the northern part of Kingstowne. His homestead, a tract of about three hundred acres, was inherited from his father under the latter's will, proved 2 February 1722, but he hady lived there since his marriage in 1700. Following the division of the town in 1722 into North and South Kingstown, this three hundred acre tract fell within the limits of the former; and when in 1742/1743 the western part of North Kingstown was set off as Exeter, the farm was crossed by the dividing line, the greater part lying in Exeter, being located about two miles northwest of the present [1939] station of Slocums. He acquired other parcels of land by purchase, and established his two oldest sons, John, Jr. and James on farms, the latter being taken off from the homestead.
The records show him serving office on the Town Council; he was Overseer of the Poor; and was Town Treasurer in North Kingstown from 1729 until the division of the town in 1743. In 1724 he was administrator of the estate of his brother, ightman, and was guardian of the latter's heir, a minor, as late as 1727. He also served for a time as guardian of the widow Sarah Wightman. "Guardian" in this context means someone charged with looking after the property rights of a minor, widow, etc., not a substitute parent as we might interpret the word today.
John Wightman was a Baptist, his name and that of Jane, his first wife, appearing in the membership of the rural Six-Principle Baptist Church, called Stony Lane Church, situated about five miles to the northeast in North Kingstown. He liee his second son, James, installed as pastor of this church about 1740, some ten years before John's death. He was one of the signers of a Petition from the Association of Baptist Churches meeting with this North Kingstown Church, 8 September 1729, praying the General Court in Connecticut for exemption from unjust taxation for the Baptist Churches there.
The 300-acre homestead passed to the oldest son, John, the farm of 112 acres taken off in 1732 and deeded to the second son, James, having been deeded back to the estate when the latter removed to East Greenwich. John sold this homesteo parts: the 112-acre tract to Samuel A. Boone, and 1688 acres to Ezekiel Gardner.

Valentine Wightman, born in 1717 in North Kingstown, Washington Co., Rhode Island, died in December 1786 in North Kingstown, Washington Co., Rhode Island.
Valentine Wightman left home when a young man, finding employment in South Kingstown, which was his residence at the time of his marriage. He was married to Rebecca Jamain in Newport by Rev. Nicholas Eyres, assistant pastor of the Secont Church of which his own uncle, Rev. Daniel Wightman, was the pastor. In the marriage record his wife's family name (hardly legible) appears to be Jayman (Newport rec., Vol. I). It seems probable that her name was Jamain but spelled phonetically in the record as it had come to be pronounced.
Rebecca Jamain was born in 1720 probably in Newport, Rhode Island. In 1686, a colony of French Huguenots, comprising 45 families from western Normandy, emigrated to America and located in Rhode Island. Purchasing some 5000 acres of Nart lands in the southeastern part of East Greenwich from the Atherton Land Co., they allotted their farms, planted trees and hedgerows and began raising crops. The venture proved an unhappy one. Speaking a foreign tongue, clanishly serving their own interests within their own domain, and particularly keeping to some of the forms of their ancient religion, especially the altar, they were held in suspicion, and friction developed. In 1687, Gov. Andrus tried to settle the aggravating contention over meadows and hay, but disaffection grew, and by 1692 most of them had left. As they were originally largely of the merchant class, they went to New York, Boston, and some to Newport.
Among these Huguenot families was one by the name of Jamain, the head of which was Etienne (Stephen) Jamain. As the dispersion of the Jamain family took place some 28 years before Rebecca Jamain's birth, she was probably a granddaughter;hing is known of her immediate parentage.
Following marriage, Valentine and Rebecca located in Wickford, and in 1770 were living on the post road "between Lodowyck Updike's gate and Boone's Mill" (town meeting records). In the census of 1774 Valentine is shown as head of a houseprising eight males over sixteen, suggesting that Valentine may have been a tailor with apprentices, or an innkeeper. In 1782 (R. I. Census) his household numbered three females between twenty-two and fifty, besides himself and wife.
Both Valentine and Rebecca were members of Stony Lane Baptist Church, located two miles north and west from their corner on the post road, their names appearing in the membership list of 3 July 1766. The pastor of this Church was Valentither, Rev. James Wightman. In 1784 they were residents of Exeter, but called "of No. Kingstown" (town meeting records). Valentine died in North Kingstown two years later. As he left no will, the "son John" was appointed administrator on 22 December 1786, with his brother Paul and brother-in-law Benjamin Cole as bondsmen (No. Kings. Prob., xii, 56). The inventory, filling a page, is entirely illegible.
Their descendants in several branches of the Wightman family changed their name to Whitman. His daughter Patience adopted the name Whitman later in life, and changed her son's name to Whitman "Whit" Valentine Cole.
Rebecca was living in Exeter, Rhode Island in 1784, but that is the last record of her.

William Gibbs Comstock states: It appears that David Comstock occupied his father Samuel's homestead at the northeast corner of the village. It is perhaps 60 rods easterly from the Branch bridge, southerly from David's some 60 rods is the hstead of his grandfather, Capt Samuel (1654-1727). David's son George Comstock, a Quaker, succeeded to the occupancy of David's home, and after George, it passed into the hands of Nathan C. Aldrich.

William Comstock went to Hopewell, Va. and from there to Kentucky (by 1787 when Miriam was born ?? she seems to have married in 1787).

They were associated with the Harned family in Nelson Co., KY. See the "Harned Family of KY." by Arthur L. Keith, in he Kentucky State History. Soc. Register, Vol 29, No. 87.

It is not known when William Comstock came to Louisiana. Daughter Esther was baptised in St. Landry Church at Opelouses 11 June 1786.

Am searching for a William Comstock who was the father of Rosalie Marianne Comstock in the early 1800's. Rosalie is listed in Father Hebert's books as being from New Orleans but married Ursin Augustin Aucoin in 1840 in Thibodaux. She lateried Jean Charles Naquin in

Hi. Just wanted to let you know that I went to the Ascension Parish Courthouse today and found some records on the Comstocks who lived in Ascension. Sadly, most of the documents are in French (and written very, very small). I can make out e of it, but I'll need to get help with the entire documents.
I have found that most of the witnesses on these documents that I told you about were the "elite" of Donaldsonville. They were the people who ran the show, so to speak. John Louis Comstock Sr. listed himself on his marriage record as being fm New Orleans. Also, there is a William V. Comstock listed as a witness.
I have been in touch with the JOHNLYONS group at Rootsweb, who will probably be very helpful in our search for the Merriman connection. I've had some contacts through them who have shown interest and knowledge.
I'll get back with you when I find out more.

New information on the Ascension Parish Comstocks. They definitely were related to a William V. Comstock, as he appears several times in documents associated with them. I was contacted by someone who is researching confederate naval officernd wanted info on William Van
Renaulme Comstock and John H. Comstock of New Orleans. The
Donaldsonville Comstocks definitely had an "in" in New Orleans because several of the children were married in New Orleans.
I think I have found out why this particular Comstock family left the area! John Louis Comstock, Jr. who married Zulmee Landry was interdicted a few years after the Civil War and spent the rest of his life in an insane asylum in New Orleans.dward Comstock (who I think
may be Philippe Edward) was also interdicted after the Civil War. In 1802 Zulmee Landry Comstock applied to the court for permission to sell land which she owned as separate property and stated that she needed a court order because her husband had been placed in an asylum for thirty
years. I also have copies of the orders placing both John and Edward into state custody. Edward went to Jackson.
It seems they were a well respected family because the people of the area took care of the children afterwards. Joseph St. Martin became their tutor under the succession proceedings of John Sr. Most of the witnesses on the documents, as I st to you, were the "in crowd" of
Ascension and Assumption Parishes, as I think I told you. There were judges, legislators, plantation owners, etc.
I'll keep you posted as I find new info. I think we have really discovered MY William. Now if I can just prove it. See ya, Patty.

I think the wife of the guy in our local group is descended from Hester (Ester), if I recall what he told me correctly. I'll let you know for sure when I talk back with him.
I'm lucky for all of this treasure hunting. I was born and raised in Terrebonne Parish (Houma). I live in Lafourche Parish (Thibodaux). And I work in St. James (Convent), Ascension (Donaldsonville and Gonzales),
and Assumption (Napoleonville) Parishes. As a district court reporter, I work in all of these courthouses so it's a snap to run downstairs on my lunch hour and look up stuff. That's why I was so excited when I realized my stubborn little Comstock line was linked to Ascension
Parish.
Also, I'm a member of the Terrebonne Parish Genealogical Society,which is really well promoted and helpful. The genealogy section of the Terrebonne Parish Library is quite extensive. And, they just had a new
tax passed, so they will be adding lots of new stuff to it! They're asking for people to recommend what books they would like bought for the library. That's only 15 minutes away from my house.
Also, Thibodaux, where I live, has Nicholls State University, which has a wonderful section on genealogy and local history. They have archives on most of the local people/events/history from the southern section of the state.
Also, Thibodaux is the home of the Diocesan Archives for the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux, the repository of all of these old records from Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishes.
I've only been hooked on genealogy for about three or four months, so I still don't know how to look up the really good stuff yet, but I'm learning. Sadly, I do have to work for a living, so my time is limited. I would rather do this 24 hs a day.
Oh, by the way, I would love to see some connection to Edward Douglas White in my line, even if it's not direct. The reason? My oldest son just graduated from and my middle son is a sophomore at, you guessed it,
Edward Douglas White Catholic High School here in Thibodaux. That would be a real kicker.

I am not good at all on the internet, so you can be assured that the reason you couldn't find the JOHNLYONS-L group was because I did something wrong in sending you the address. Sorry! Try USGenWeb.com then go to their archives, select Louina, and type in "Merriman" or
"Lyons." They'll have things about the Lyons group in there.
I found a "Grandinego" (I think is how it's spelled), which is the name of a witness on one of your group's documents, who was given an English land grant in a DeVille book about English land grants in Louisiana. I also found an "Aldridge Plation" mentioned in an
abstract of newspaper articles from Assumption Parish. That may be why the Comstocks came to Louisiana, through Rachel and whoever this Aldridge Plantation belonged to. I'm going to have to do some searching to find out who owned it.
I also found a William Comstock who served in the Confederate Navy and who was buried in Donaldsonville. He listed his next of kin as a daughter named "Gussie." Have you ever run across a "Gussie" or anyone whose name would transpose itself o the nickname "Gussie"?
By the way, the wife of one of the guys in our local genealogy group in Terrebonne Parish is a descendant of Hester (Ester) Comstock in your group. He says he has a folder on the Comstocks and we are trying to get copies of everything he . I'll let you know if anything pops up.

Amy was born 10 March 1775 in Rhode Island, where the Comstock family had lived since about 1640. Her father was William Comstock, born about 1730\1740 in Rhode Island. Her mother was Rachel Aldrich born 1742 in Massachusetts. They migrated to St.Martinville, Spanish Louisiana.

Amy married William White about a month before her 16th birthday, 31 Jan.1791, in St. Martin's Church in St. Martinsville, LA. William was 25, having been born 17 December 1766 in North Carolina to John White and Sarah Gambil.

John and Sarah had moved to North Carolina from Culpepper Co.,VA. William died on 8 October 1821 on the Vermillion River but his estate was not placed in probate until 1824. The names of their nine children are listed: Mary, Reuben, Jesse, George, Rachel (Barbara Vernon's ancestor), Henry, Rebecca, William and Julie, the last four being minors. The widow, Amy, was authorized to sell the land, as she was planning to move to Texas to enter Austin's colony.

Stephen F. Austin had taken over the negotiations of his deceased father Moses Austin in order to bring to Texas 300 families to settle between the San Jacinto and Brazos Rivers. On the advice of her brother-in-law, Humphrey Jackson, Amy and all of her children, except Rachel (who had married Mark Lee in Louisiana), and Jesse, left with others (Reuben White and his wife and 3 children, son George and also daughter and son-in-law Mary and Wm. Whitlock and their 4 children) from Louisiana. They probably departed from Berwick Bay (now Morgan City), where they had family connections.(Amy's sister, Rachel, had married Thomas Berwick in 1795, whose family Berwick Bay was named.)

By sailboat they could be taken as far as Lynchburg on the San Jacinto River. Before settling on their land (4428 acres to a family), conditions had to be met. The Roman Catholic Church was the established church of the land and each new applicant for the land had to agree to support it, prove good moral character, and an oath had to be taken to become a citizen of Mexico and to respect their laws. Marriages had to be performed by priests, but since no priest was a resident in the Colony, a few marriages were recognized by civil bonds in which the parties agreed to be married when a priest became available.

After the organization of the Republic in 1837, this was no longer required. Slavery was not legal in Mexico but this law was gotten around by changing the slaves to indentured servants. The black population was at least 30% of the whites. It does not appear that Amy brought any slaves with her to Texas.

(from Lori London) There is a paragraph in her book taken from her title to the land that goes like this: "Amy White went to the aforesaid league which by the preceding decree we have granted to this last party, etc........ We put the saidow Amy White in possession of said land, taking her by the hand and leading her over it, telling her in a loud voice and understanding voice that by virtue of the Commissioner and the authority vested in us, etc...... Amy White, as a token of finding herself in real and personal possession of said land without any opposition, shouted, pulled grass, threw stones, set stakes and performed the other necessary ceremonies, being notified of her obligation to cultivate it within the two-year term prescribed by law."

Amy Comstock White, early settler, was born on March 10, 1775, in Rhode Island to William and Rachel (Aldrich) Comstock, who migrated to St. Martinville in Spanish Louisiana. She was baptized a Catholic in the church at Opelousas on July 25, 1789, and married William White, older brother of James Taylor Whiteqv in St. Martin's Church on January 31, 1791. She and her husband settled near his brothers on the lower Vermillion River below Abbeville, where she bore eleven children between 1792 and 1819 and became a widow on October 8, 1821. On the advice of Humphrey Jackson,qv her widowed brother-in-law, Amy White decided to move in 1824 to Galveston Bay, where she and her married sons could each receive a league of land. She claimed her 4,428 acres on the west side of the San Jacinto River on August 16, 1824, while her eldest son, Reuben White,qv located his on August 19 on the east bank, opposite his mother and below Jackson's plot. White then returned to Louisiana where she and the other heirs of her husband settled his estate on September 14, 1824. Soon thereafter the widow and her four minor children left for the San Jacinto River in company with Reuben and his wife and three children; son George; and her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and William Whitlockqv and their four children. Another son, Jesse, arrived in 1830. Amy White did not depend on her male relatives to take care of her business, and in June 1825 she wrote to Stephen F. Austinqv that surveyor Isaac Hughesqv had included another person's home in her league without her knowledge, and the man was not willing to sell the improvement. By May 28, 1828, Amy White had married William Swail and deeded her league to him. The couple moved to his league on the west side of the Trinity River, just above Liberty, where Swail probably died some time before 1838. At age sixty-two Amy White Swail petitioned the Liberty board of land commissioners (as Amy White) for her allotted labor of land, which was granted on January 19, 1838. The biographer of the White clan says that she died in 1853 in either Harris County or Liberty County.
