Robert Middleton was transported in 1671 (SOM 16.411). The first mention of him in Charles County land records was on 11 Jan 1674 when he witnessed a deed (CCLR F.79). In 1675 he registered his cattle mark and in 1676 he presented a servant, William Baily age 14 (CCLR).

(Charles County Land Records)He was commissioned as one of two coroners for Prince George's County on May 15, 1696. Born about 1651 in England. Transported to Prince George's Count (then part of Charles County) prior to 1671. Married Mary Wheeler and had 5 sons - three remained Episcopal, as was the father; and two sons became Catholic as was their mother. This accounts for the Middleton's of Charles County being Catholic and the Middleton's of Prince George's County being Episcopal. As a young man about 20, Robert MIDDLETON was transported into Maryland, along with Benjamin ARNOLD and Thomas THORNTON, by Benjamin ROZER, Esq., of Charles County, prior to 2/16/1671. His birthplace has not been determined, but he was born c1651,according to a deposition he filed in August, 1681, stating his age as "about 30 years". In 1672 he married Mary WHEELER, a lass of only 14 and of a prominent Catholic family. Though of a tender age, their happy married life was attested by an issue of five healthy sons. Also he and his wife Mary were given by her father "for fatherly love and natural affections" the plantation "Wheeler's Hope" of 365 acres, lying on a fresh run which emptied into Piscatatway Creek. Besides meeting the challenge of establishing himself on what was then the frontier, he repeatedly evinced a strong will in defending law and order. In1687 through his attorney C. LOMAX he demanded a writ against Richard CLOUDEN in a plea of trespass. He successfully defended himself in a number of other small legal suits. In 1689 he demanded 200 lbs. of tobacco as the price of one wolf's head. Between 1692 and 1707 he shouldered numerous civic responsibilities - jury duty, land boundary commissioner, appraiser, and estate administrator. He was a juror in the Provincial Court in 1680 and 1698. He was appointed a Justice and also coroner for Prince George's County, in 1696, shortly after the founding of that new county. He attested his loyalty to the Crown in 1689 when he signed, with others, the "Address of the Inhabitants of Charles County to their Most Excellent Majesties King William and Queen Mary." He recorded the mark of his cattle in the court term of November, 1704. In 1679 he was one of twelve men of a commission to settle certain property boundaries in the county. He refused to sign the report, which is curious since there was reference there unto Colonel Benjamin ROZER who had brought him into Maryland a few years before. He was a Warden and a Vestryman of St. John's Church of Piscataway Parish at Broad Creek from 1704 to 1708. He died in testate and his administrators Mary MIDDLETON and John MIDDLETON (oldest son) signed the administrative bond on May 6,1708. His third son Thomas was surety for 150 lire sterling since his estate was closed informally, the list of the children cannot be proved complete. Besides the five known sons there may have been daughters, for Benjamin BELT named a son Middleton BELT, and the name MIDDLETON continued in the BELT family for several generations. In 1681 the Council at St. Mary's City commissioned him a cornel in the Mounted Troops under Captain Randolph BRANDT. The MIDDLETON family history will be started with the birth of a daughter to MAJOR JOHN and MARY WHEELER on March 22, 1658, of Charles County, Maryland. This daughter married ROBERT MIDDLETON about 1672, and thus we find the name MIDDLETON in Maryland for the first time. ROBERT MIDDLETON was born about 1651, but the place of his birth has not yet been established at this time. It is believed he is from Somersetshire, England because correspondence is on file in the Maryland Archives between residents of Charles County, Maryland, and the above-mentioned place in England.
ROBERT's father in law, MAJOR JOHN WHEELER, gave to he and his wife, MARY, "for fatherly love and natural affections", his 365 acre plantation, "Wheeler's Hope".
ROBERT MIDDLETON died interstate - the official record is found in a bond dated May 6, 1708, "being the seventh year of Her Majesty's Reign": "ROBERT MIDDLETON, of Prince George's County: MARY MIDDLETON (widow) administratrix, John Middleton (oldest son), administrator; Thomas Middleton (second son) surety; Edward Willott, witness, and WILLIAM MIDDLETON (youngest son),witness.

"Alexander Hamilton of Spy Park", by Lamar Hamilton
Following the surrender of the Jacobite forces at Preston, they were
imprisoned during the winter and spring of 1715/16 - poorly fed, ill-clothed and
badly quartered. Approximately 700 of these "rebels" were transported from
Liverpool to the plantations to be placed under indenture for seven years as
servants. Two of the transport ships made port in Maryland, the first one,
Friendship, on 20 Aug 1716 and the Good Speed on 18 Oct 1716. Daniel
Stewart was among the 54 rebels on the Good Speed. Richard Elgin, a Charles
County planter, was his original purchaser, but his indenture was subsequently
resold to Thomas Orrell, an innkeeper and planter of the Portobacco area. John
Stewart, who married Mary Hamilton, was also transported on the Good Speed;
his indenture was sold to John Middleton, another Charles County planter. It is
likely that John Stewart, apparently in his mid-teens, was related to Daniel
Stewart - perhaps a younger brother, at least a cousin.

Aug 10, 1725 from James Middleton of CC, planter, to James Marr of CC, planter, the lease of part of that tract of land called Jordan, and now in the possession of sd James Middleton, lying on the west side Zachia Swamp below the old usual road that leads from Portobacco [Cr] to the plantation where John Smith at Jordan now dwells, containing about 50 acres. Sd Middleton, by his petition to the General Assembly of Maryland, set forth that he was confined in CC Jail for debt, and that by reason of many misfortunes, he was unable wholly to satisfy his creditors, and prayed, in his petition, that a law might pass to discharge him from further confinement, upon his delivering up all his property for the use of his creditors. Sd General Assembly, at Nov session 1790, passed an act declaring that, if sd Middleton complies with ad act, he shall forever thereafter be released from all debts, promises, contracts, and covenants due from him, and appointed the CC Sheriff as the Trustee in behalf of the creditors of sd Middleton. Also, all that tract I bought of John Barton, Ignatius & Henrietta Mongomery, called Pyes Hardstrife, containing about 39 acres, Also all that tract of land I bought of the State of Maryland, called Mongomerys Adventure, containing about 38 acres, reserving to my son Ignatius the use of a tract of land called Batchelors hope, containing about 180 acres, during the natural life of my sister Sarah Jenkins & also reserving my wife's thirds if she marries.
The rest of my personal estate is to be equally divided between my wife & my children, Ignatius, James, Eleanor, Francis, & Elizabeth. But if my wife does not abide by this bequest, then after her third part is paid, the residue shall he equally divided between my children, Ignatius, James, & Eleanor. My will is that 7 £ 10 shillings current money that Edward Jenkins subscribed for building a chapel shall be paid out of my estate.

Hawkins. The information you sent on the family said Mary Ann married our Ancestor Zachariah Compton. Could this have been a second marriage for Mary? Every thing else fits very nicely so wondered.

THOMAS HAWKINS HANSON (Colonel Samuel, Judge Samuel, [1684-1740], John Hanson [16__-1714]), son of Samuel Hanson and Anne (Hawkins), was born about 1750 in Port Tobacco Hundred, Charles County. At the beginning of the Revolutionary War, he commanded a compnay of the Flying Camp compose dof men from Charles County and saw active service in the early campai gnaround New York. He received a Revolutionary pension claim (no. 1678 3).
On March 2, 1778, he married REBECCA DULANY, daughter of WALTER DULANY and Mary (Grafton) of Annapolis, but more recently the wealthy widow of Thomas Addison, of Oxon Hill Manor, Prince George Co.

ii. Rebecca Hanson, b. Nov. 25, 1784.

THOMAS HAWKINS HANSON5 (1792-18—)
Thomas Hawkins Hanson, son of Thomas Hawkins and Rebecca (Dulany) Hanson, was born March 4, 1792, at Oxon Hill Manor, Prince Georges County. On February 10, 1802, he obtained license in Washington to marry Elizabeth Beall. She was the daughter of Captain William Dent Beall, a distinguished officer of the Revolutionary Army and member of the Society of the Cincinnati.
On May 16, 1831, Thomas H. Hanson and Elizabeth his wife, Issac B. Beall, and Mary Beall, the heirs of William Dent Beall, deceased, of Prince Georges County, received from Clement Smith and Daniel Kurtz, of Georgetown, and Richard Smith, of Washington, the tract "Independence", lying partly in Prince Georges and Charles Counties which the late WilliamDent Beall had conveyed to Clement Smith.1
It is said that Thomas Hawkins Hanson ultimately settled in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where he died leaving a large issue.

It's my husband who's G.G.G Grandfather was George Compton who was married to Sarah Duke. Nancy (their daughter) was married to Thomas Finnell. They are buried on their farm along with their son Charles and his son. We believe their slaves that came with them from Va are also buried on the same property. We walked the cemetery and have pictures of the stones. They are in poor shape and broken. The owner of the property didn't know they were back there.

RICKETTS FUNERAL FRIDAY AFTERNOON AT McGUIRE HOME

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 0'clock at the home of Mrs. Samuel H. McGuire, near Canal Lewisville, for Anthony Ricketts, aged 87, who died Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock after an extended illness of senile gangrene. Mr. Ricketts died at the home of his daughter Mrs. S.H. McGuire. Burial will be made at Oak Ridge Cemetery, this city.
Mr. Ricketts had been bedfast for a year at the home of his daughter.
Anthony W. Ricketts was born on a farm two miles west of Roscoe, March 30, 1834. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Jane Wilkin, Sept. 30, 1856. To this union were born nine children. They are: Mrs. S.H. McGuire, of near Canal Lewisville; Mrs. Henrietta Wolfe, Cleveland,O.; A.J. Ricketts, of this city, Mrs. Delia Bown, of Kansas City; W.A. Ricketts, Nevada, Iowa; Mrs. Anna Hinderlang, Omaha, Neb.; G.W. Ricketts, Coshocton. Two children, Mrs. Dollie Dawson and James Ricketts are dead. His wife preceded him to the grave several years ago.
He followed the occupation of a farmer and lived on the home farm where he was born until he was 60 years old. Long after the death of his first wife, Mr. Ricketts married Mrs. Kate Parks Howell of Linton, Ind. He and his wife moved to Linton, where they lived until six years ago, when they returned to the Canal Lewisville Community. Later they returned to Indiana where Mrs. Ricketts died.
Besides his children, he is survived by his sister, Mrs. Nancy Finnell, aged 89 of Seattle, Wash. and 28 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Among the old settlers and Ieading ciri_ens of Greenwood township is Elisha Compton. He was born in Coshocton county, Ohio, on the 20th of October, 1838. His ancestors were of English descent, and they settled in Old Virginia at a period previous to the Revolutionary war. George W. Compton, his father, was born in Culpeper county, Virginia, and was married there to Amelia Wood, whose ancestors were also early residents of the Old Dominion. Soon after his marriage George W. Compton starred with his young wife for Ohio, and settled in Coshocton county. This was about the year 1818. He chose as his location the point of land running down between the Tuscarawas and Walhonding rivers, which there unite to form the Muskgum. This was the birthplace of Elisha Compton. There were eight children in the family, and the subject of this sketch was the fourth in the order of his birth. He lived in Ohio until about eighteen years of age. For the boys of that day the ordinary district schools were the only means of obtaining an education, and much attention was paid to schooling. The whole family moved to Illinois in 1856, settling in the spring of that year on section 32 of Greenwood township. Ar that rime, this part of the county was but thinly inhabited. The improvements were confined to the edge of the timber. The prairie was almost entirely without settlements. Before the family left Ohio, his father had purchased a thousand acres of land and had a house built ready for occupancy. His father lived in this place till his death, which occured on the 28th of January, 1877. His mother died on the 4th day of April, 1870. George W. Compton was a man of great industry and of superior business management. In his youth he had enjoyed but scanty educational advantages, but possessed good natural abilities, and was known as a shrewd and successful trader. He had no ambition for public life, and was better suited for the plain career of a quiet farmer. He was moral and temperate in his habits, and was respected by everybody who knew him for his many good qualities as a neighbor and a cirieen. He was a member of the United Brethren Church. In his politics he was a republican, and had been a member of that party from its first organirarion. He accumu
lated considerable property.

Elisha Compton was married on the 1st day of November, 1860, to Miss Ardenia Ann Teasley. This marriage took place at Greenville, Bond counrv. Mrs. Compton was born in Bond county, October 30, 1841. Her father, William Teasley, was from Kentucky, and came to Illinois about the year 1836, at the age of twenty-one. Her mother's name before marriage was Martha Ann Jett. After his marriage Elisha Compton began farming for himself, and a couple of years afterward moved on the place where he now lives. He owns I80 acres of land. The names of his children are: Martha A., William G., Mary A., Liutisha B., Henry C., Alfarata, and Albert. In his politics he has always been a member of the republican part}, and his first vote for president was cast for Abraham Lincoln, at his first election in 1860. Although he has been an earnest republican, and on general issues has supported the candi¬dares of that party, yet in local elections and in choosing township officers, he has always felt himself free to vote for the best man for the position without regard to his political proclivities. He was elected justice of the peace in 1878. He is a member of the Methodist Church. As one of the representative citizens of Greenwood township and one of the old settlers ?fthis part of the county, his name deserves a place in this work.
