This site is tracking Phoebe and her 2nd marriage to Curtis, which the Jersey Settlers, stated that wife of William Jones remarried Curtis.

Curtis:
My 5-g-grandparents, were Richard and Phoebe COURTNEY CURTIS, Sr. Richard Curtis was of Welsh descent. H. Married (1) Martha "Phoebe" Courtney in about 1747, in Half Moon Swamp, Onslow County, NC; (2) Hannah SWAYZE, 1782, Cole's Creek, Jefferson County, MS.
He was born 2/6/1727/28; at age 11, Baltimore, MD,1738, orphan; bound until age 21 to William and Hannah Curtis Courtney; William Cook died before 1739 Hannah married Robert Courtney on 10/2/1739; Richard was bound to Robert and Hannah Courtney until age 21. He was in Onslow County, NC by 1747; 1754-1766, moved to Pee Dee, SC, to a Welsh community near the mouth of the Black River, about 60 miles north of Charleston, SC.
He fought in the American Revolution in SC; in 1780, fled his Tory neighbors. He and family went by wagon to Holston River, TN. They went by flatboats to the Natchez District of the Mississippi Territory, then under Spanish rule. There were 3 boats in the party. In boats 1 & 2: Richard Curtis, Sr., wife, two brothers, William and Benjamin Curtis, and their wives, Richard Curtis, Jr. and his wife, John Courtney and John Stampley and their wives, John Jones and his wife and others. In the 3rd boat were travelers who had joined the Curtis party. They were attacked by Cherokee, all of the people in the 3rd boat were either killed or captured.
They landed at Boyd's Creek (later renamed Cole's Creek) on March 1, 1781. Richard Curtis, Sr., died on 11 20/1784, Cole's Creek, in what would later become Jefferson County, MS.

Richard Curtis, Sr. was born in 1728 but the place of birth is unknown. Richard was bonded to Robert Courtney in Baltimore Co., Md. in 1739.Robert moved his family to Onslow Co., NC in 1744 where he died in 1751. Meanwhile, Richard married Robert's daughter, Phoebe, after the death of her first husband, William Jones. William and Phoebe had one son, John Jones.

William Jones, son of Lane Jones and Anne Barber Jones, m. Phoebe Brown, daughter of Zachariah Brown.
(note: Phoebe Brown disputed - looks like she was Phoebe Courtney - see notes on Phoebe) William Jones Died very young, leaving a widow and an only son by the name of John. Mrs. Jones then married a man named Richard Curtis, Sr. and five sons and three daughters were born to them.

John Jones was educated at William and Mary College and in 1768, married Anna Brown, daughter of Abraham Brown.

At the breaking of the Revolutionary War, the family was found in South Carolina on the Great Pee Dee River about sixty miles from Charleston. John Jones ardently espoused the cause of the Revolutionists. He enlisted in the army, served three campaigns under General Francis Marion and was also in the siege of Charleston. The name of John Jones appears on the marble tablet in the Wren Building of William and Mary College, Williamsburg, Virginia, listing the known members of the College in the Revolution. John Jones is identified as being from Dinwiddie County, Virginia. (Approved DAR line)

At the close of the War, Richard Curtis, Sr., and his family, John Jones and his family, sons and daughters and their families, emigrated to the Mississippi Territory, joined the Jersey Settlers in the Natchez Country, settled on Fairchild's Creek. John Jones is buried at a place called Forty Hills Plantation.

THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH IN MISSISSIPPI

Dr. Richard Aubrey McLemore in his History of Mississippi Baptists concedes: "The first protestant settlement in the Old Natchez region was established at Kingston, about sixteen miles southeast of Natchez in 1773. The community flourished and a Congregational church was established.
In 1781, the Indians became hostile and forced the abandonment of the settlement." But he concludes, "Many of these people later became members of other churches, several of them joining the Baptist Church".

Dr. McLemore describes the beginning of the Baptist church thus: "A group of seven people met at Sister Stampley's home on Cole's Creek," This was in 1791, eighteen years after Reverend Swayze established his Congregational group. The list of this pioneer group as given in the Salem Baptist Church Minutes in the Mississippi Baptist Archives is as follows:
Richard Curtis, Jr., pastor, William Thompson, recording clerk, William Curtis, John Jones, Benjamin Curtis, Ealiff Lanier and Margaret Stampley. Among the seven we note John Jones the forebear of this distinguished Methodist minister and historian John Griffing Jones. This was a group of Baptists from South Carolina but other farm families were among the early members. Several of them with Congregational connections. In fact, Rev. Swayze's daughter Hannah had for her second husband (after the death of Jeremiah Coleman) the Baptist leader Richard Curtis, Sr., whose daughters Hannah and Phoebe with their husbands John Courtney and John Stampley came in the South Carolina party. Other names found on the early church rolls were then or later connected with the Jersey Settler families: Miss. F. Coleman, Elizabeth Chaney, Elizabeth Coleman, Feribu Coleman, Buchner Darden, Maria Darden, Jane Farrar, Elizabeth Farrar, Miss Aleaf Farrow, Sarah Guice, Martha Harper, John Jones, Phebe Jones, Daniel and Jane Perry, James B. Truly, Sarah and William Whitney and Willis McDonald. Then there were Elizabeth R. and M. B. King.

The difficulties suffered by this second Mississippi Protestant group were greater than the Congregationalists. Five factors caused the greater difficulty, first, the river routes were traveled, encountering Indians; second, the situation had not been reconnoitered by scouts as the Swayze brothers and the King brothers had done; third, land was not legally held with authorities notifies; fourth, the rip was made during the Revolutionary War; fifth, the Spaniards, having gained strength in their hold on the colony by 1791 were more daring in prosecution.

The story will be told from the writings of recognized historians, the early Methodist historian, Rev. John Griffing Jones, already memntioned, and the recent Baptist historian, Dr. Richard Aubrey McLemore. Rev. Jones writes: "About the year 1743 there lived in Dinwiddie county, near Petersburg, in Virginia, a newly-married couple, of Welsh descent, by the name of William and Phebe Jones. Mr. Jones soon after died, leaving a young widow and an only son, by the name of John. Within a few years after the death of her husband Mrs. Jones married the man who will hereafter be known in these sketches as Richard Curtis, senior, by which marriage they had five sons and three daughters. After the marriage of Mrs. Jones to Mr. Curtis we have no very satisfactory knowledge of the family for about thirty years.

In the meantime, John Jones, the son of Mrs. Curtis by her first marriage, had grown up to manhood, and on the 28th of June, 1768, had married Miss Anna Brown, daughter of Abraham Brown. At the breaking out of the Revolutionary war the family was found in South Carolina, on the Great Peedee river, not far from the mouth of Black river, and about sixty miles from Charleston... "The Curtis famiy decided to establish their new homes on Cole's Creek, about twenty miles above Natchez. The stories of productive farm lands that were free to all settlers and the peace they would have from the turmoil of the fratricidal strife in South Carolina must have made the prospects of beginning again very enticing. Spain had conquered the Natchez district in 1779, but the emigrants did not anticipate any difficulty from this source.

The route the migrants followed to their new homes was the familiar one used by many who were a part of the great westward migration. They left their homes early in 1780 and traveled to the Holston River. It was not a long journey, but winter weather, bad roads, and the poor transportation equipment available made it a difficult and heart-breaking trip. They arrived on the Holston in the early spring and immediately began the task of raising a crop of corn while building flatboats for the journey down the rivers to their new home.

In the fall of 1780 the revelers were ready to begin their voyage. The party included Richard Curtis, Sr., and his wife; two brothers, William and Benjamin Curtis and their wives; Richard Curtis, Jr. and his wife; John Courtney and John Stampley and their wives (nee Hannah and Phoebe Curtis, respectively, daughters of Richard Curtis, Sr.); John Jones and his wife; and others whose names are unknown. Page 486: PHOEBE JONES MARRIES IN SECRET - SPRING OF 1795

"Richard Curtis who brought his family from Virginia and Charleston to Natchez after 1780, was the first Baptist to operate in the district. They settleed on Cole's Creek, hacked their homes out of the wilderness, and spent most of their Sundays praying and reading scriptures in the privacy of their own homes. Curtis died in 1784, and his son, Richard Curtis, Jr., assumed the preaching duties, ably assissted by John and Jacob Stampley, gifted "natural" preachers. The young Curtis had none of the reserve or respect for the law that his father had shown, and he soon embroiled his sect in an argument with the Catholic priests and Spanish government.

In the Spring of 1795, as the religious situation grew more tense in Natchez, Gayoso called Curtis to government house and asked him to swear that he would not preach in public again, under pain of confiscation of his goods and expulsion from the province. Curtis signed the agreement, but as soon as Gayoso left the province for top secret business up the Mississippi River, the Baptists operated openly. The crisis developed when David Greenleaf, a noted Natchez mechanic who built the first cotton gins in Natchez, decided to marry Phoebe Jones, the daughter of John Jones, who wanted the ceremony performed by her uncle, Richard Curtis, Jr. The couple arranged for an elaborate meeting in the woods. Greenleaf and his companions would ride south from Villa Gayoso, while Miss Jones and her entourage rode north. With a sign and coutersing, they would meet and be married. Practical jokers in Greenleaf's party persuaded him to ride past the meeting without acknowledging the sign (or did he have cold fee?), but they returned within minutes and the couple laughingly rode to William Stampley's plantation and were married by torchlight.

The ceremony was secret, but what married couple are able to live together clandestinely? Greeleaf's fame as a mechanic and his numerous contacts with the Spanish government made him anything but inconspicuous. The secret was uncovered and the Spanish priest demanded to know who had performed the illegal ceremony. When it was discovered that not only had Curtis done the horrors in the Greenleaf-Jones nuptials, but, in addition, had baptized William Haberlin and Stephen deAlvo, acting commandant Grand-Pre issued orders for their arrest. But sentires posted on the roads leading to Curtis' home warned the trio, and they escaped through the wilderness to South Carolina, not to return during the Spanish rule."

On October 16 1779 after raids by so-called patriot, John Willing, into the British West Florida settlements of Natchez, Baton Rouge and Manchac, Edward Forman and 18 others signed oaths of allegiance to the "United Independent States of North America" in the presence of Capt. Pickles who had captured the British armed vessel on Lake Ponchartrain.

Richard Curtis, Sr., and family (there was a stepson, John Jones, who married Anna, daughter of William Brown on 28 Jun 1768, and five sons and three daughters) resided in 1775 on the Great Pee Dee River, near the mouth of Black River, South Carolina, but came to the Natchez Country in 1780, where Richard Curtis, Sr. died near Cole's Creek on November 10, 1784.
Accompanying Richard Curtis, Sr. to the Natchez Country were 3 sons, a stepson (John Jones) and 2 sons-in-law, three of whom later became pioneer citizens of Amite County: (1) son Richard, Jr. and his wife Pattie; (2) Son William Curtis and his wife; (3) and daughter Hannah Curtis, wife of John Courtney.
Richard Curtis, Jr., who had been licensed as a Baptist Minister in South Carolina in 1778, began to preach throughout the Natchez Country but especially in the Salem Community near Cole's Creek. In 1795 he ran afoul of the Spanish authorities for preaching and officiating at the marriage of his niece, Phoebe Jones to David Greenleaf, and he was forced to return to South Carolina, where he was ordained in 1796. He returned to the Mississippi Territory in 1798, and as Moderator helped to organize in due and ancient form Salem Baptist Church on Cole's Creek in Jefferson County as a regular Baptist Church, the first in Mississippi.
On May 9, 1806, Rev. Richard Curtis, Jr., assisted by Rev. Thomas Mercer, Rev. James Courtney from South Carolina, Rev. Isaac Jackson from New Providence Baptist Church and Rev. Jonathan Curtis from Salem Baptist Church, constituted the Ebenezer Baptist Church on Beaver Creek in Amite County and was the first Pastor.
Among the charter members were Mary Curtis, and his brother-in-law, John Courtney, both with letters from Salem Baptist Church on Cole's Creek.
Mary Curtis (wife or daughter?) dismissed by letter on October 1, 1808.
Rev. Richard Curtis, Jr., was Pastor of New Hope Baptist Church in Adams County, Mississippi (organized in 1800 and was the second Baptist Church in Mississippi), and a messenger to the Mississippi Baptist Association in 1808-1811.
Rev. Richard Curtis, Jr., was disallowed a claim of settlement on Beaver Creek in Amite County in 1802, because the land was not improved, but was granted 320 acres there in 1808. He is listed as a citizen of Amite County in the Census of 1805 and 1810. (A relative also named Richard Curtis is listed in the Census of 1810 and 1816.)
Rev. Richard Curtis, Jr. died of cancer on Beaver Creek in Amite County, Mississippi on October 28, 1811, and is buried in the yard of what was years later the residence of Dr. W. b. Kinnabrew, about 1/2 mile from Ebenezer Baptist Church, and there is a marble obelisk in the churchyard.
John Courtney, brother-in-law of Richard Curtis, Sr., was appointed delegate from Ebenezer Baptist Church of Amite County, Mississippi on January 31, 1807, to attend the organization meeting of the Mississippi Baptist Association at Cole's Creek Church.
He settled with his wife, Hannah Curtis, and 7 children on 666 acres on Beaver Creek, Section 30, Township 1 north, range 3 east in November, 1802.
Brother Benjamin Curtis, brother-in-law John Stampley, a Baptist Minister, and half brother John Jones and their families settled in the Cole's Creek area of the Mississippi Territory.

The second Baptist Church organized in Mississippi was located at the confluence of Big Bayou Pierre and Little Bayou Pierre in Claiborne County, Mississippi. This area is not in the city limits of Port Gibson, Mississippi.
The second Baptist Church in Mississippi was organized in 1798, in Claiborne County, Mississippi and was know as Bayou Pierre Baptist Church. It ceased to exist in 1825

Mississippi Missionary

As mentioned before, Joseph was a member of Head of Enoree in 1797. Late that year or the next, he made his first trip to Mississippi with Richard Curtis, Jr. This trip was made without his family, as was the custom of the
time to venture farther west, find a safe place and then return for the family. Baptist historian, W. E. Paxton records the results of this first trip:

"They sought not in vain, for soon after their return they were visited by William Thompson, who preached unto them the Gospel of our God: and on the first Saturday in October, 1798, came William Thompson, Richard Curtis and Joseph Willis, who constituted them into a church, subject to the government of the Cole's Creek church, calling the newly constituted arm of Cole's Creek, ?The Baptist Church on Buffaloe."

This church was located near Woodville, Mississippi and the Mississippi River east of Alexandria, Louisiana. Joseph returned for his family by 1799, but it would seem he might have made a trip across the river into Louisiana
before this date, since this is where he returned with his family.

Curtis had already made one trip to this part of the country in 1780. In that year Richard Curtis, Jr. along with his parents, half-brother and three brothers, and all their wives, together with John Courtney and John Stampley
and their wives, set out for Mississippi. Mississippi Baptist historian T. C. Schilling wrote that "two brothers by the name of Daniel and William Ogden and a man by the name of Perkins, with their families, most of whom were Baptists" were also along on this first trip.

John Coale (1805-1875) was born in St. Landry Parish. His parents were James Coale and Jemima Curtis, who were married in Natchez Territory in Mississippi in 1785. John Coale married Rachel Hayes in Opelousas, Louisiana, on Jul 27, 1823. Both were eighteen years old at the time. Ultimately, they had nine children.
It is believed that he migrated to Texas in 1823 to receive a Mexican Land grand. However, some problem occurred and he never received the final title.
It is known that he lived in the Cow Bayou Settlement. He was mentioned in several documents, although there is no record that he owned land. He was listed with Richard Ballew, John Harmon, and Thomas Hart ona committee to select a suitable place for the seat of justice of the new municipality of Jefferson. George Patillo mentioned him as one of the early citizens that he remembered. Also, he was mentioned by Captain George W. Hargraves as one of the men who served during the Texas Revolution. He therefore turned his interests to cattle and cattle-raising, along with his brother and his children. His older son, David, married Louisa Stephen. His son Joshua died in Apri 1903, and was buried in Orange County. John's other children married Stephensons, Burrells, Mills, and Williamsons. The elder Coale Died on April 20, 1875, and was buried in the John Coale Cem in Orange. His wife, Rachel, died on November 21, 1890, and is buried at the Abshire Ranch Cemetery in Liberty, Texas.

Notes:

Rev. John Griffing Jones was the son of Jonathan Jones and Pheobe Griffing Jones. He married Jane Oliphant Ross Jones and was a Methodist pastor and historian. He authored "A complete history of Methodism as connected with the Mississippi conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South: Written at the unanimous request of the conference." The book chronicles the experiences of the Rev. Tobias Gibson and his successors as they spread the fire of Methodism in the Natchez territory in the late 1700's and early 1800's.

His sermons and journal are kept in the archives of Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. Volumes 1 and 2 of his complete history have been published for some time. In recent years, original transcripts of volumes 3 and 4 were found in the papers of a descendant of a historical society member. These volumes will be published in the near future.

Anson West's "History of Methodism in Alabama" contains the following biography (the Mississippi Conference at that time included the state of Alabama):

"The preacher for the Marengo Circuit for 1827 was the Rev. John Griffing Jones. That was his first and last work in Alabama. He did a good work and made a lasting impression on that Circuit. He was born in Jefferson County, Mississippi Territory, August 23, 1804. Just after he had passed seventeen summers he was, as a seeker of religion, admitted into the Methodist Episcopal Church, and in three or four months thereafter he was pardoned of guilt and filled with love imparted by the Holy Ghost; as the days passed peace gave place to doubts, and then doubts subsided and assurance ensued; and subsequently, though in the same year, he obtained a pure heart. By a District Conference at Bethel Camp-ground, in Wilkinson County, Mississippi, October 9, 1824, he was licensed to preach, and was recommended to the Annual Conference for admission on trial. At the session of the Mississippi Conference in Tuskaloosa, Alabama, December 24, 1824, his recommendation was presented and he was admitted. At the session of the Conference at Tuskaloosa, Alabama, beginning December 14, 1826, he was admitted into full connection, and on Sunday, December 17, he was ordained a deacon by Bishop Robert R. Roberts; and at the session of the Conference at Tuskaloosa on Sunday, December 28, 1828, in the presence of the conference and the congregation, Bishop Joshua Soule ordained him an elder. He was a delegate to a number of General Conferences of his Church. He read, studied, and wrote much. He knew the Scriptures thoroughly. He was a man of prayer and of piety. He wrote a History of Methodism in the Mississippi Conference which is a very valuable work, and well written. He deserves a monument for that work, and it is a monument itself. He continued as a member of the Mississippi Conference till the close of his earthly pilgrimage. On October 1, 1888, he left these earthly shores and entered into the mansions on high."

Paren Hayes was born 4-3-1834 according to yellowed papers left by my gran dmother.

Paren Hayes was administrator of succession of Thomas Hayes opened De c. 9, 1870 and Toliver Hayes was appointed administrator of the esta te of Mary Ann Hayes, for which there was a probate sale on June 9, 1890.

The line of Paren and Toliver Hayes have been traced to England and c an be found on
familysearch.com as line of Guillaume Hayes, b. 1730, Halifax, PA.

Family stories handed down were that Paren served in the Civil War with h is brothers, Toliver and John Hayes. I believe he served in the same compa ny (Brigade 6th, Texas, Ragsdale Regiment, County A, Texas calvary battali on) as his brothers and if he had lived to apply for his pension, it wou ld have been verified since records were lost.

Hayes Maze(Vol. III, No. 2, p. 24)lists Paren's children as Enock L. Hayes ,b. July 12, 1858, Elijah Hayes,b. Sept. 2, 1860, Sarah Eletha Hayes,b. Se pt. 17, 1895, who married "Man" Dolsie Hebert, Lucretia Hayes,b.? who mar r. Rosmond Robhicheau, Emma Hayes,b.? and Paren Black Hayes III,b. Oct. 2 6, 1892, who marr. Eugenia Jeanette "Nettie" Sloane.

1904 Louisiana Western Railroad built a line from Lake Charles to Lake Arthur and a townsite of 40 acres was surveyed and laid out by Toliver Hayes. He sold lots and Hayes, LA, was on the map. Hayes Lumber Company and a rice mill. In 1936 Gf Oil Company discovered oil. in 1946 a natural gas plant and pipeline was installed.
