John, yeoman, Roxbury, resided for some time, then rem. to Sudbury, where he was a deacon. [E.] Propr. and selectman, 1639. Son John also propr. Com. to end small causes, 1640. He m. Aug. 9, 1660, Annis, widow of Wm. Chandler and of John Dane. She d. March 15, 1683; he d. 1 (3) 1671, ae. 83.
Will dated 25 March, prob. 25 (5) 1671, beq. to gr. son John P.; to wife Annie; to dau. Woods and son-in-law John Wood of "Mal-bery." Cousin Cheerers, shoemaker, in Boston, one of the execs.; cousin John STIBBINS one of the overseers. The widow's will, dated Nov. 1, 1672, prob. Nov. 15, 1683, beq. to her son John Chandler the estate left her by her husband Dane; he to pay to John Dane, and to her sons Thomas and William Chandler, certain sums; to her daus. Hannah Abbot and Sarah Cleaves. Cousin Elizabeth Deni-son, Anna Stebbins and sister Wise to aid in division of estate. Sons Thomas and John Chandler, execs.; sons Wm. John Stebbins was chosen in 1652 and sworn to the office of a Constable in the Town of Springfield for a year. A John Stebbins was bound into court in May 1655 to answer the charge of misbehaving and calling his elderly father an "Old Foole and uttering other unseemly words towards him." Under colony laws a disobedient and disorderly child might be punished by whipping of up to ten stripes or fined. In this case John was fined forty pounds but due to lack of evidence, he was released and discharged of his bond. This John is most likely the same John as the one from Northampton who appeared in court 25 Sep 1660 to prosecute Robert Lyman for "misdeameaninge himselfe towards his, the said John Stebbin?s wife: he the said John Stebbins complaynes to this Court for that the said Robert frequentinge the said John?s house did use very evil and unseemly behavior towards his wife enticing her several times that he might ly with her, takinge her in his arms and otherwise venting his unchast desires." Robert Lyman was fined and required to pay Deborah Bartlett and Robert Bartlett for coming as witnesses. These witnesses tie John to the above mentioned Rowland Stebbins--as his daughter-in-law was Abigail Bartlett. .
Occupations: farmer, fur-trader, laborer. He strung a lot of wampum and sold agricultural produce at John Pynchon?s general store even after he moved to Northampton in 1656. .
Sergeant Stebbins?s lot on the hill was selected for the building of the new meetinghouse in 1674. In exchange he was to have four acres north of Round Hill. John Stebbins is not on map of early land owners, but his father, Rowland?s land bordered Morgan Johns and John Dibble. .

Thomas Bliss, who was born October 26, 1742, was one of the ancestors of Mrs. John A. Mead (Mary Sherman, daughter of Wm Northup and Mary Bliss). He was sergeant in Captain Chapin's company, Colonel Woodbridge's regiment, in Gate's Continentl northern army, in 1777. He was a descendant of Thomas Bliss, who was compelled to leave England on account of religious persecution, and embarked with his family at Plymouth, for the wilderness of America, in 1635, and whose father was Thomas Bliss, a weathy landowner and staunch Puritan of Devonshire, England born in 1550.
Judge John Holbrook (great grandfather of Mrs. Mead), of Abington, Connecticut, fed the patriot troops while they were n on their way to Boston to engage in the battle of Bunker Hill. The elm tree under the shade of which the citizen soldiers e their food, became historic, and still guards the old Holbrook mansion as it did more than a century and a quarter ago.
Mrs. John A. Mead is a member of the Colonial Dames, through her lineal descent from Hon. Phillip Sherman, who was a commissioner of bondaries, state recorder, member of assembly many terms and a noted man of affairs in the colonial period of ode Island. Upon her mother's side, Mrs. Mead belongs to the Choate family, and has in her possession an immense pewter platter (the silver of olden times) with the coat of arms and "R.C." (Rebecca Choate) engraved thereon. Hon. Rufus Choate, the distinguished jurist, and Hon. Joseph H. Choate, the present American ambassador at the court of St. James, are relatives. Mrs. mead says, "I am sure we are not proud to be the descendants of Henry VIII, but such we know is a fact." Mrs. Mead was prsident of the auxilary to the Rutland Young Men's Christian Association for seven years, is ex-president of the Progressive Shakespeare Club, is a member of The Fortnightly, a church organization, and has written many papers for it and served on its committees. She is a treasurer of the Ladies' Aid Associtiaon of the Rutland City Hospital,and is also a member of the Oread Association, composed of the alumni of the Oread Collegiate Institute, located at Worcester, Massachusetts.
Dr. and Mrs. mead are the parents of one child, a daughter Mary Sherman, born October 12 1878 in Rutland Vermont. She was educated at the Orgontz school for young ladies, near Philadelphia, and at Miss Anne Brown's school on Fifth avenue in w York city. She has been for several years secretary and treasurer of the Progressive Shakespeare Club and chairman of the membership committee of the auxiliary to the Young Men's Christian Association and a member of the Fortnightly Club. She was one of the charter members of the Mercy Holmes Mead Chapter of the Society of the Children of the American Revolution, and its name is that of her ancestress. She is also a member of the Ann StoryChapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. She was married June 25, 1902, to Carl Bingham Hinsman, vice president of the Howe Scale Company, and director in the Borden & Selleck Company, Chicago. Mr. Hinsman represented ward nine of the city of Rutland as alderman on the municipal board ni 1901, and 1902, the latter year being unanimously elected president by the council.
