- Census: 1810, Pughtown, Frederick Co, Virginia
- Will: 7 Feb 1844, Frederick Co, Virginia
Notes:
When a young man, John purchased a large tract of land lying between White Post and the Shenandoah River, on which, in 1809, he built a fine, large brick house. So successful was he in business that he named his home "Providence", and at the homestead he rasied 12 children - 6 boys and 6 girls.
All of his sons settled around him, one being a practicing physician, and the others successful farmers and useful citizens. All were members of the Bethel Baptist Church, and previous to the Civil War were old line Whigs. John later moved to "Montmoreny". Montmorency, the old Kerfoot home, is located near the road leading from Delaplane to Upperville. Part of the large brick mansion was built in the early 1820's. John Kerfoot of Frederick County, Virginia, purchased the estate on May 28, 1822, from Charles L. Carter and his wife, of Ridgeville, Fauquier County. Most of the land in this 640-acre (one square mile) farm lies east of Gap Run, which is considered to be the dividing line between the inherited properties of John Carter of Sudley, and Landon Carter of Pittsylvania, Prince William County.
Montmorency was inherited by Daniel F. Kerfoot, a son of John Kerfoot. He married Maria Carr, a daughter of Joseph Carr. The farm was willed to Daniel's son, William, and to his daughters.
