Hi - as a Gorin descendant and historian here in the area of Mammoth Cave- no McClains are ever shown to have owned the cave. I know the author of the Longest Cave book, and have done extensive research into the cave ... name just doesn't appear! Sandi

HISTORY OF THE MAMMOTH CAVE.

As told to me by Mrs. Nancy Maria Barnhill Whitson my Mother in law. (by Marie T Jentzech Whitson; wife of Edward Whitson, son of James Edward Whitson and Nancy Maria Barnhill) Healdsburg, California. April 18, 1922.

"Sometime before the Southern war, just exactly when I can not tell, There were two Brothers by the name of McClane. They came from Europe some where and setteled in Kentuckey, and became very wealthy in real-estate, and I have heard from one of there Granddaughters, that they owned nearly one half of the State of Kentucky. This might have been exagurated, never the less they owned much very much.

As the snake were rather plentiful and dangerious in Kentuckey it was in the Winter time when men dug for Saltpeter, and on one of these ocasions these two McClane Bros. punched a hole into the side of a Hill. When they discovered that it was a large cavity, they made investigations and by letting themselves down in the cave by a rope, they discovered that it was a very large Cave, and found many curiosities on there first visit into the Cave, among which was an Indian woman who sat in a stone arm chair - or a stone that was shaped thus. With her knitting basket on her arm and her needle work in her hands, On close inspection they found that she was dead and petrefide, the two brothers were so amaised over it, that they desided to take the Indian woman out of the Cave and put her on Exebition, and in doing so they were much disapointed when they saw this woman fall to pieces as soon as she got into the open fresh air. As time went on many investigating parties were taken into the Cave, as it was on the land owned by the McClane Bros. They found so many Indian relics and curiosities, that they were assured that at some time the Cave must have been the home of a prominent Indian Chief - There was a large apartment like a dineing room in the center of which was a large stone table, around it were stone chairs just like the one the woman had died in, at the head of the table was a chair somewhat larger than the rest, as though it was a Chief! Chair, from the ceiling hung earth shaped like icidles and various ornaments adorned the walls. There was a river in the Cave with very clear water and in it were fishes without eyes, and many other things I have now forgotten as time rolled on. They found the Cave to be about five miles long and had several enterences. On one accasion while a party of explorers were in the Cave, One of the McClane Bros. Strayed away from the rest of the party and got lost. It tuck them three days to find him, he was almost dead from exposure and hunger when they found him perfectly nude haveing burned up one piece of clothing after another after his torch had burned out. Now all this happened and much more up to fifty years before the Southern war broke out- when the McClane Bros decided to leave Kentuckey I can not remember the given of either of the McClane Bros. But they bothe liberated there negro slaves they hac many and sold all there land - the Cave was sold to two men - who?s names I do not remember althou I have been told, these men were pardners in the agreement of buying the Cave. The deed of the Cave was made out to these two men, by the McClane Bros. And all that was paid down at that time was $25.00. These men were to make regular payments, but never did so. The McClane Bros. Had so much of this worlds goods they did not bother them about it and the full amount is still due. They settled again in Illinois these McClane Bros. One of them had eight children. He was my husbands Great- great grandfather, in some way he received the news that one of the men to whom they sold the Cave was dead - Now comes a case of curcumstancial evidence. It seams that one of these two men was a mean sort who wanter to get the Cave in his own name but could not persuade his pardner to sell - so one day the two men were seen going into the cave - only one came out again and that was the mean one - a week went by - and neighbors began to asked where the other pardner was (the good man) but could find out nothing. Thus a searching party went forth, and found him down in a gulch where they believed the mean pardner had thrown him from the Bank above. And it killed him, as the good man had no relatives there was nothing done about it and the mean man got the cave in his own posesion. I understand that the presant owners of the Cave are his decendents- One of the Daughters of my husbands Great Great Grandfather McClane who setteled in Illinois, who?s name was Elizibeth maried an enterpriseing young man after whom the Town of Barnhill, Ill. was named he built homes and induced people to come there and live - his daughter the oldest married James Whitson - that marrage tuck place in Fairfield or Springfield - Mrs. Nancy Maria Barnhill Whitson brought her husband and one child to Cal. Just about the end of the war 1853 - of that family there are four children liveing - Mrs. Murphy in Oregon. Frank Whitson in Sunsmure Cal. Geo. Whitson Alameda Cal. And Ed Whitson of Healdsburt Cal - who is my husband -

This is about all I can tell you about the Mammouth Cave. Mrs. Marie T. Jentzech Whitson, 426 Nort St Healdsburg Cal.

The births as I know them - McClane came from Europe - Elizibeth McClane his daughter - married Barnhill. Nancy Maria Barnhill his daughter was born in Barnhill Ill - married either in Springfield or Fairfield Ill. I can?t tell the place was not far from Barnhill - to James Whitson who was born in Monrow Co. Kentuckey. About 40 years ago Grandma Whitson recieved a letter from a Lawyer in Fairfield of Springfield Ill. asking her to sign a paper - but I could not induce her to do so - The Lawyer was doing some recearch work and came across the unpaid deed of the Cave - said if she would sign - he would fight the case for half - but she was not interested and distroied the letter. I do not know what year Henry went back- he married into the Turney family- Mrs. Ed. Whitson."

The tree where I found the story about the cave (see notes for Elizabeth McClain) that involved Nancy's family, the McCains, did not show any documentation that she married Felix, but only that she married a Barnhill. Perhaps further research will prove it out. Felix did have a daughter born in this age slot per the census records.
However, the person who has the tree is Keith Andrews; and he is a DNA match to John; so since we descend from Felix, and the actual distance matches the estimated distance of relationship, that is probably good enough evidence.

Page 179 - It is accepted tradition - a tradition borne out by local facts - that the first house in Fairfield was built by the Barnhills. They had entered the land from the Government, upon which the town was laid out, and had lived there for some time before, and thus may be termed the first settlers of the town, as well as the first of the township. This first house stood a little north of the present bank building, but on the opposite side of the street, near the marble factory. It has passed away with other landmarks of the pioneer days, and the spot now is only known by a few of the older citizens..... John Barnhill built the second residence in Fairfield on the lot where Mr. Thomas L. Cooper's handsome brick residence now stands. It was of logs, and was built by Barnhill just after his marriage which took place about the time of laying out the town.
The elder Barnhill, the patriarch of the Barnhill family, died in Gallatin County before any of the family moved to this section, as we have stated in a preceding chapter, and his widow came here with her children among the earliest settlers of the county. Hardin Barnhill was the eldest son, and John, mentioned above, was the second, while Andley was the third and youngest. The family at one time was a rather numerous and prominant one - prominant in business and local affairs but of no particular pre-eminence. they were honest, industrious, honorable, faithful and accommodating - kings among their kind, fine types of their class, with instincts keenly whetted in their struggle for existence against the wild game, the ferocious beasts and the murderous savage. The Barnhills have now been dead for many years, with no lineal descendants surviving them nearer than the grandson of the Widow Barnhill - "Jeff" Barnhill, as he is called. Even he is growing old and is becoming bent with age and infirmity. There is much in the history of the Barnhills that recalls a type of that day. They had been admirably trained, or had trained themselves, for their place in life and in security and content had lived out their span, tilling to fullness their measure of ambition."

Florella Marie died there as a widow in 1950, after which their son Donald and his wife were living there. The address where Flora lived must have been 1233 instead of 1133.
1233 is between Elmira and Barnes streets.

comment: I contacted Indiana State Library 2 or 3 weeks ago with the request that they look for an obit for Flora (my great-grandmother). A follow up call a few days later, and then a week or some days went by and then the lady called to say she found it. Great! She mailed it, and then another week to get here. It came in the mail "today" Friday, May 27, 2011. What is so awesome about this is Flora died on Friday, May 27, 1938! How amazingly cool is that!

Preston F. Breckenridge, 76, Centralia, died in a local hospital early Tuesday evening. He was born June 6, 1890, in Breckenridge, Ill., and had been a Centralia resident for the last 32 years, coming from North Dakota. He was a retired city of Centralia employee, having worked in the park department for 16 years before his 1964 retirement. He was a member of Newaukum Hill Grange. Surviving are his widow, Mary L., of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Lyle (Margaret) Mauermann of Centralia; four sons, Robert A. of Sacramento, Calif.; Charles M. of Opportunity; LaRue P. and Donald, both of Centralia; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. J. Service for Preston F. Breckenridge, 76, who died Tuesday in a Centralia hospital, will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. in Newell-Hoerling's, Centralia, with the Rev. Clinton Alton officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. In addition to other survivors, he is survived by 17 grandchildren. The casket will remain open at the chapel until 1 p.m. Friday.

Bio: William Arthur Moyer was born to Harold and Flora Moyer. His parents were divorced in the1890s, and Will stayed with his mother. After finishing fourth grade, he was taken out of school and put to work chipping mortar off old bricks for ten cents per hundred. Will's brother Preston "Ted" Moyer played drums in the Gold and Silver Convention in Springfield. He listened to Ted's records of the Capitol Band, and using an instrument book learned to read music and play drums. As his skill improved, Will began to play in groups, like the Capitol Band and the Springfield Watch Company Band. Even as he excelled in his music, Will pursued other activities including painting, carpentry and radio.
Will went to work in Springfield at Bressemer's Department Store, where he met Rosa Mae Snider. They were married on Christmas night, 1912, in their new home at 620 S 12th St.
In 1916, Ted called and offered Will a job with the government. Will moved to San Antonio and worked as a timekeeper at the Remount. He was laid off after the Great War and moved back to Springfield for a year. He then returned to San Antonhere he worked for the Postal Service.

In 1925 Will came to Beaumont, Texas, to play in the Magnolia Band. At that time, all the band members were given jobs in the Magnolia refinery (later Mobil), but their band duties were paramount. The band played park concerts, parades, ar many civic affairs. They moved into a house on Fulton Street. Not long after, he moved once more into the house at 1337 Roberts Ave., which would be his home until his death in 1982.

Will stayed on at Magnolia after the band dissolved and retired from the refinery in 1956. At the annual retirement dinner in 1956, most began their speaches with 'When I started working here...' - but Will said, 'I didn't come to the Maa to work, I came to play!' He got an ovation for that."

Some time after Rose died in 1981, Will went up on the roof to clean the rain gutter and trim limbs from an overhanging pecan tree. He fell and injured his back, which forced him into a nursing home. Several months passed, and Will Moyer dit 11:45 a.m. on 27 November 1982 at the Green Acres Nursing Home in Vidor, Texas. He was 91.

Sixty Years is a long time to be married. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Moyer of Beaumont will reach their Diamond Anniversary this Christmas Day. They will observe it with a reception Sunday at the home of a son.
Mrs. Moyer is the former Miss Rose Snider. They were married in Springfield, Ill., on Dec. 25, 1912.
In 1916 the Moyers moved to San Antonio where he played in the San Antonio Municipal band and worked.
In 1925, they moved to Beaumont where he became employed at Magnolia Refinery (now Mobil) and, as a hobby, played in the Magnolia Refinery Band.
He played the snare drum and Mrs. Moyer said, "Naturally, he plays an instrument that makes the most noise and no music."
He also played in the official State of Texas Band, under the direction of Dr. Harry McCloud and then R.A. Douchette.
"At the end of the year, the refinry always gives a dinner for all the employees who are retiring," Mr. Moyer recalled.
"I was asked to say a few words, so I walked to the front of the room and said, "Well, I didn't come to Beaumont to work...."
"And the whole room got quiet.
"Then I said, 'I came here to play.'
"And everyone broke into a laugh."
Mrs. Moyer sews for her family and the public, too. "I really enjoy sewing. It gets me away from everything.
"I sew everything from wedding dresses to pantsuits, and pantsuits more than ever now, because more people wear them than anything else."
And now -- 60 years, 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren later -- Mr. and Mrs. Moyer are celebrating.
Sunday, they will be honored with a reception in the home of one of their three sons, Raymond, of 1765 Bandera. The formal announcement will be in the Sunday Enterprise-Journal.
Their daughter, Mrs. Ruth Eggleston of Durango, Colo., and the other two sons, Robert and Arthur, both of Beaumont, will attend -- and, of course, many friends...

It appears Fred W. Blood never married or had any children.
He is in the 1920 census, living in Springfield IL, age 49, single, and occupation is Music Teacher - Studio.

I was not able to find Fred in the 1930 census so I believe he is the Fred M. Blood who died at Springfield IL on 28 MAR 1924. No age or birth date is given in this index record.

I show Fred was the only child of Leroy S. Blood and Allice Amanda "Allie" Beaver, and he was born in OCT 1871 at Springfield IL.

If you find any descendants, I'd love an update. Part of the reason I love genealogy research is that I love a good mystery. My specialty is working with photos. I'm pretty good at identifying people in old photos. I think there's a possibity the Templeton's are related to you, maybe through marriage. I wouldn't rule it out.

Sherry: Milly and I have a couple of pictures that Dad painted years ago that we thought you might like to make copies of them and incorporate them in your website. One is a charcoal drawing that Dad made of himself and the other one is a color painting of an old Interurban car (similar to a street car) that ran between Beaumont and Port Arthur many years ago. If you would like to do this you are welcome to make copies of them. We also have an old oil painting that Dad painted of his old homestead in Illinois. Back in the late 30's or early 40's he went to David Crockett Junior High at night and took painting lessons and these paintings were the only ones he did after that. As stated in his memooirs (see Yellowed Pages, by Elizabeth Deaton Moyer), "Will's brother-in-law, Lee Crutcher, got Will a job at Bressemer's Department Store as electrician, Window trimmer, and elevator operator."

"Rose Snider worked at Bressemer's Department Store in Springfield in the gift wrapping department and at the cosmetics counter. She met Will Moyer when he was working there. From memoirs (see attached article Yellowed Pages, by Elizabeth Deaton Moyer), "He (William Arthur) played in a theater orchestra for $15 a week. William A. Moyer, 91, of 1337 Roberts, died Saturday at Green Acres Nursing Home in Vidor.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Forest Lawn Memorial Park under the direction of Carroll-Wallace Funeral Home.
A native of Cropsey, Ill., and a resident of Beaumont 37 years, he was a retired operator from Mobil Oil Corp. He was a former member of the Magnolia Band.
Survivors include three sons, Raymond L. Moyer, Robert E. Moyer and Arthur L. Moyer, all of Beaumont; a daughter, Ruth Eggleston of Bayfield, Colo.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-granchildren; and three great-great-granchildren.

RAYMOND L. MOYER, 74, of Beaumont died Friday at Beaumont Medical Surgical Hospital.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Carroll-Wallace Funeral Home with burial in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
A native of Springfield, Ill, he lived in Beaumont 62 years and was a retired adult education administrator in the Beaumont Independent School District with 40 years of service.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Moyer of Beaumont; son John Raymond Moyer of Austin; brothers Robert Earl Moyer and Arthur Leslie Moyer, both of Beaumont; sister Ruth Eggleston of Durango, Colo.; and three grandsons.

Parents moved to San Antonio, Texas, then to Beaumont in the '20s, where they remained the rest of their lives. Ruth joined the Army after her divorce from Elmer Ray and went to Japan during WWII. She remained in the Army for a while, was still enlisted in the 1950s and still in Japan. Her mother took care of her young girls. It was in the Army that she met and married Van. Danny was an abandoned baby, possibly Korean, that Van had "found" in a field, and they adopted him.

On September 26, 2012, Garrett "Breck" Breckenridge passed away at his home in Rolling Hills. The son of Garrett and Fredella Breckenridge, Garrett was born in South Dakota on May 16, 1928. Following his service in the U.S. Marine Corps, Garrett earned a degree in economics from Occidental College. He joined IBM in 1953 as a sales representative and was eventually promoted to Director of Marketing for the Western United States. After retiring from IBM, Garrett co-founded Results Marketing, a marketing training and consulting firm which included AT&T and Xerox among its clients. He had a passion for sailing, travel, good books, and growing tomatoes. He was the life of any party, displaying a great sense of humor and an amazing capacity for fun. A loving and loyal man, Garrett had the very special quality of maintaining friendships over distance and time. He lived his life to the fullest, and always with integrity and honor. Garrett was well loved and will be greatly missed by his best friend and wife of 25 years, Robin; his children: Susan, Karen, and Jim; grandchildren: Ryan, Jason, Kyle, Reed, and Laura; little sister, Joan; and lifelong friend, Ann. Friends are invited to a celebration of his life on October 21 at the Trump National Golf Club in Palos Verdes, starting at 11:00. The Rev. Douglas Smith will lead a funeral at 10 a.m. Monday. Burial will be at Rest Haven Ceme- NEW WHITELAND Donald Lee Henry. Donald Lee Henry, 61, died Thursday at his residence in New Whiteland. He was born in Indianapolis May 23, 1928. His parents were Earl Henry and Marie Henry. He was married to Woneta I. (Greeson) Henry. She survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Karen Fox, Sandra Bratcher and Linda Pedigo; two stepsons, Michael Webb and Howard Webb; a brother, William Henry; a sister, Jane Kowalski; and 14 grandchildren He was an electrician for Local 481 for 29 years before retiring in 1979.

A service will take place Saturday at 1 p.m. at G.H. Herrmann Madison Avenue Funeral Home. Friends may call today from 4 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Lynda Moyer's Funeral Rites are Today at 2
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today in Carroll-Wallace Funeral Home Chapel here for Lynda Elizabeth Moyer, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond L. Moyer, 2360 Avenue E, who was fatally injured early eesterday after the auto in which she was a passenger struck a utility pole.
The Rev. Walker McPherson, pastor of the North End Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will include Pat Summerville, Gid Graham, Bill Marlow, Roland Bryam, Arnold Whedbee and Pat Vietch.
The girl, who had received her high school diploma from Beaumont High earlier in the evening, died in the emergency room of Baptist Hospital. The accident occurred about 4:30 a.m. at Washington and Fourth.
Officers identified the driver of the car as Harry L. Harville, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. S.L. Harvill, 405 Chaison, who told police the auto's steering mechanism would not respond.
The teenagers were reportedly en route to the Moyer home, retuurning from a graduation dance and movie, and a breakfast after graduation exercises.
Young Harvill was awarded the 1962 McGraw-Hill National Merit Scholarship and was one of six top honor grads in the senior graduation class.
Miss Moyer was a member of the North End Methodist Church, the church choir, the band orchestra at Beaumont High School, the Rainbow Girls, and the Latin Club.
Besides her parents, survivors include a brother, John Raymond Moyer, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Moyer 1237 Roberts and Mrs. Runy Deaton of Rusk.

Rose Mary Scully entered the loving arms of Jesus on October 8, 2020 at the age of 85 years old. Rose Mary was born in Beaumont, TX on June 27, 1935 to Elmer Franklin Ray and Ruth Louise Moyer.

Rose Mary (Memaw or Granny to most of the family) dedicated her life to her family. She knew, loved, and was incredibly proud of every one of her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She kept track of their birthdays, graduations, and special days, and she always made sure to send a card with a thoughtful sentiment in the most beautiful cursive handwriting and a small gift when she could ? which was almost always. We always looked for that card in the mail.

Rose Mary attended football games, band and choir performances, and everything she was physically able to attend to support her family. She was an amazing (and very picky) cook. She made amazing gumbo, biscuits, gravy, beans, corn fritters, and could turn flour, corn meal, and oil into almost anything. She loved paying for meals and hated asking for help from anyone. Sometimes she was overly honest, but she never disappointed us. She was an enthusiastic Houston Texans and Astros fan, and never missed a game.

Rose Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Patrick Joseph Scully, Jr; son, Matthew Wayne Scully; and daughter, Karen Sue Lewis.

Rose Mary will always be remembered by: her daughters Patricia Phelps of Alvin, TX, Deborah Ramirez of Humble, TX, son, John Scully and wife Deea of Roanoke, TX, daughter-in-law Keri Scully of Pearland, TX, son-in law Charlie Lewis of Brenham, TX; sister, Betty Holley of Albuquerque, NM and brother, Danny Eggleston of Rio Rancho, NM; Grandchildren Jason Ramirez, Jacob Ramirez, Joshua Ramirez, Crystal (Ramirez) Mills, Jonah Ramirez, Julio Ramirez, Jeffrey Phelps, Kenny Scully, Amanda (Scully) Moore, Becky Neumann, Kristalyn (Raska) Knipstein, Joe Raska IV, Elizabeth (Neumann) Scott, Royce Neumann, Tyler Scully, Caleb Scully and Canaan Scully. She will also be remembered by her 37 great grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren.

The Scully family will be receiving friends and family on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at SouthPark Funeral Home. They will receive family between 4:00 and 5:00 PM, and friends from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, October 14, 2020. All are welcome. Interment will follow services at SouthPark Cemetery where she will be laid next to her loving husband Patrick.

I was born on a Saturday night at 8:15. My mom said I had been due on Sep 25, so I was a little late. She was at her mom's house on Congress when she went into labor early that day. When they decided it was time, they called an ambulance as they had no car at that time. My dad and my grandmother went with her to Beaumont Infirmary. I remember her telling me how when the attendants were carrying her up the stairs on the gurney, she was apprehensive that they might drop her. She was given sedation for the delivery, so doesn't remember some of it; but it apparently had begun quite a rainstorm and by Sunday morning the streets were flooded. She remembers a nurse relating to my mother that she had had to get her horses out of the flooded fields where they were being kept. My grandfather came up, too -- I'm guessing when he got off work (?) and then my other grandmother, my dad's mom, came on Sunday. They kept women in the hospital quite a few days then, and she thinks she stayed maybe 10 days. The doctor who delivered me was Dr. Charles Todd, Jr.
She also remembered that they told her at the hospital that they used me to get the measurements they needed for making a board to use for the male babies to be circumcised. (sorry, boys)
