    Other-Begin:
Samuel de Champlain prepared a map dating from 1632 that shows the Blue Ridge valleys. Traders and trapper from the Virginia colony made it to the Blue Ridge and beyond by 1650. A Dr. John Lederer of Hamburg, Germany mentioned the Shenandoah Valley in his diary of 1670. Col. Cadwallader Jones was apparently the first official explorer of the Shenandoah Valley for the British in 1673 and Alexander Spotswood followed him in 1716. However, by 1707, Germans were drifting down into the Shenandoah Valley south of the Potomac from Pennsylvania.
