With respect to Jacob and Constant, I've done quite a bit of research on this. At first I thought it was Constance Perkins but I?m certain it is not. I have seen a lot of trees on Ancestry.com that claim it's Constance Perkins but I don?t believe that. Thomas Christian was an adjacent landowner of Richard Oglesby, Jacob's father, (as confirmed through land grant records) and he had a daughter named Constant. I have a copy of Thomas' will and he names Constant as a daughter. Additionally, we have a relative named Mary Christian Oglesby, daughter of Jacob Oglesby (son of Jacob Oglesby and Constant) and his wife Mildred Martin. Mary Christian married Coleman Estes. I have a copy of Coleman's will and in that will Mary?s middle name is confirmed as ?Christian.? It was not uncommon for girls back then to take the grandmother's maiden name as the middle name (this happened elsewhere in the Oglesby tree - e.g., Elizabeth Dancy Cole). Based on this evidence I think it?s pretty certain that Constant Christian is the wife of Jacob Oglesby, son of Richard.

In 2009 when John had his YDNA test the results came back as match in 37 and 67 tests. No common denominator was found. On Feb 27, 2013, a tester in the Oglesby group, Richard Arthur (Oglesby) Wilson, was a match to him in the 37, with a step 2 match. As it turned out, the Sheltons married into the Oglesby line with the marriage of Gustavas Adolphus Oglesby, so assuming that must be the reason the Shelton line showed a match.
Richard Arthur descends from Jesse Oglesby; and Gustavas descends from Contant, Sr., Jesse and Contant being brothers, Jacob Oglesby being their father, making Jesse the great-uncle of Gustavas.

CONTANT OGLESBY NARRATIVE According to family history, it was too hot and too dry in SC and they moved to Christian Co., KY in 1803. As you go from Greenville, KY on Hwy 189, after crossing Pond River into Christian Co., on top of a hill is a house on the left - just a little off the road. Constant lived behind that house near a spring; at last account, it is still owned by direct descendants through Jacob, son of Constant. On the right is a clump of trees, this is where Constant & Nancy are supposedly buried. A wee bit south of that, at Apex, an old road crosses going out to Natural Rock Bridge. That road was supposedly the Red Banks Trace (Henderson, KY).
Nancy, daughter of Constant, was the first white woman to cross the natural rock bridge. Constant Oglesby's family is buried on a hill above Pond River, Hwy 62. His wife Nancy is buried near a clump of trees with sandstone markers and a wire fence. (Also noted is that it is Hwy 189 and that nothing is left but sandstone rocks.)

Joel Ponton. Joel Ponton was both medical doctor and a minister of the Disciples of Christ Church. He married Sara Reavis in Cooper Co, MO on 5 Jan 1827 where they had children Andrew Judson (b. 4 Aug 1829; d. 12 Jan 1908, buried Junction, KimbleCo, TX), William Lee (m. Lutilia Ezzell 1856) and Jemima Jane (m. Thomas L. Hunt 1848). After arrival in Gonzales, a fourth David Barton (m. Lemelia Lay) was born 30 Apr 1834. On 31 Mar 1837, another son, Joseph Parthenias (m. Eliza Jane Bownds), was born in Columbus on the way back to the Gonzales area after their flight to East Texas. Wife and mother Sara Reavis Ponton died 31 Aug 1837 in Gonzales. On 28 Mar 1839, Dr. Ponton married Rhoda Delaney who adopted his children and bore more children Joel (b. 1842), Alexander (b. 1843), Martha and Ellen (and probably more) while Ponton ministered both to the physical and spiritual illnesses of his clients. Records indicate that he commonly applied steam and lobelia treatment, steam to cause sweating and lobelia (Indian tobacco) as an emetic. As a doctor, Ponton was in large demand and widely respected in the community, he had a large practice kept busy by the hazards of pioneer life. It is unclear if Dr. & Reverend Ponton practiced his spiritual ministry in the colony prior to independence. However, afterwards he was an enthusiastic minister in the early Church of Christ and established at least two congregations on the Rio Navidad in 1841-1842. In early Texas days, both of his ministeries combined could not support the large family. Ponton supported his family by as a rancher and farmer and also served the public in civil capacities. In spring 1839 after attending the death of his sister Mary Jane Ponton Patrick in San Felipe and the settlement of the William Ponton estate among the children, Ponton established his homestead on the Navidad River. On the way to the homestead on the Navidad, he purchased a 45 year old slave named Squire from James Campbell near Hallettsville. Both of Dr. Ponton's ministeries kept him on the road between homesteads and settlements, most frequently to Gonzales town. On 5 Aug 1840, he and Tucker Foley while on the way to Gonzales from their Navidad River homestead were attacked by a band of 27 Comanches on their way to the great raid on the coast at Linnville. Dr. Ponton survived, but companion Foley did not. On 5 Mar 1850, wife Rhoda Delaney Ponton died leaving him a 48 year old widower with 11 dependent children. On 11 Jul 1850, he married 18 year old Mary Henderson, one of six children of James and Lucinda Henderson from Water Hole Branch on the Lyons League about 12 miles south of Hallettsville. Joel and Mary Ponton settled near Hallettsville and had eight more children, Sarah, James, Alice, Laura, John, Lena, Henry and Victor Hugo.

Upon the death of his brother Andrew Ponton in 1850, Joel Ponton became the administrator of his estate by will of widow Mary H. Berry Ponton. After Andrew's widow Mary H. Ponton married Dr. Daniel C. Bellows in Dec 1850, the couple challenged Joel Ponton's position as administrator of the Andrew Ponton estate and he was removed, but after Ponton had established home tracts and slaves Austin and Elvira as property of the children of Andrew Ponton. The Bellows became owners of the Hicks Hotel and Tavern in Hallettsville, renamed it The Mansion House and after financial difficulties with it, Mary H. Berry Ponton Bellows died in Dec 1856 and Bellows moved out of the area. In 1857, Joel Ponton was re-established as guardian of the Andrew Ponton minor hiers and estate. He was forced to sell Austin for $157 and Elvira for $800 and tracts of land to support his nephews.

When the Civil War came, Dr. Joel Ponton supported the cause of the south without wavering and continued to do so after Lee's surrender. Prior to "Yankee Rule" in Lavaca County, Ponton served as deputy county clerk Josiah Dowling, he tried without success to obtain office under reconstruction and was elected county judge in 1866 when open polls were restored. However, he was removed form office by Federal authorities. He became again deputy county clerk under Josiah Dowling through Mar 1869. As county clerk and local minister, Ponton took care of both the civil and ceremonial formalities of marriages in the area. Wife Mary Henderson Ponton died on 17 Aug 1868 and Dr. Ponton married for the fourth time, Mrs. M.A. Beedle, by minister James Ballard. She died on 31 Mar 1871. In the same year Joel Ponton married Mrs. Harriet W. Koonce, mother of a daughter-in-law Elizabeth Koonce Mayo Ponton. On 1 Feb 1875 five times married DeWitt Colony pioneer doctor, minister, rancher and farmer Dr. Joel Ponton died with his large family in attendance. He is said to be buried on the Koonce tract of land near the Kent homestead on the Andrew Kent league in a location known as Ezzell, established by Sam and Ira Ezzell.

PONTON, JOEL
PONTON, JOEL (1802?1875). Joel Ponton, early "Reformed Baptist" preacher, was born on July 3, 1802, in Virginia, the son of William and Isabella (Moreland) Ponton. The family moved to Missouri. Six years after his marriage to Sarrah Reavis in 1827, Joel followed his brother Andrew Ponton and his father to Texas. William and a companion, John Hays, were killed by Indians in 1834.

Ponton was versed in both religion and medicine and spent his entire life in the two professions; he confined his activity mostly to Lavaca County. He narrowly escaped an Indian attack in 1840 in which his companion Tucker Foley was killed. The same Indians were engaged by settlers in the battle of Plum Creek in 1840.

Ponton was probably the earliest of the "Reformed Baptists" preachers, as Alexander Campbell's movement was called, to preach in Texas. His association with these churches is first documented in 1842. His ministry continued until his death in 1875. A report by Henry Thomas, an Austin minister who visited Ponton's home on the bank of the Lavaca River in 1859, describes Ponton as "estimable and talented . . . a chaste, logical and eloquent speaker, and the only proclaimer, in the Christian Church, within sixty miles of this place." Forced to practice medicine to support a large family at this time Ponton preached very little. The Church of Christ at Ezzell was established by Ponton. He was married four times and had seventeen children. He was county judge of Lavaca County from 1866 to 1867. He died in 1875.

The Foley and Ponton Incident. On 5 August, Tucker Foley and Dr. Joel Ponton, who were Lavaca County residents, were on their way to Gonzales on the Columbus Road west of Ponton?s Creek when attacked by a band of 27 mounted Comanches. They fled on horseback until Foley's horse began to falter. Foley told Ponton not to worry about him, but to save himself. Spurring his horse onward past Foley, several warriors passed Foley in hot pursuit of Ponton. Knocked off his horse with an arrow in his hat and two in his back, Ponton abandoned his also wounded horse and escaped into a dense thicket where the Indians left a guard. The main band returned to Foley who was pursued into a creek bottom where his horse became mired in a "hog wallow". He ran for cover in the timber, but was overtaken and surrounded. The warriors promised him no harm and he surrendered. As soon as he gave up his weapons, he was tied hand and feet; the bottoms of his feet were peeled of skin with knives and he was made to walk over stones and freshly burned stubble where Ponton was hiding and forced to call in attempt to get Ponton to emerge. Shortly after, the Indians killed Foley with their spears and scalped and mutilated his body. Although Ponton?s horse was killed and he was severely wounded with two arrows in his backside, he survived by crawling through the bottom land thickets and eventually managed to return to his home the following night after which minuteman leader Capt. Adam Zumwalt was alerted to the incident.

Ellen McKinney Arnold, daughter of John McKinney, related the incident told to her by her father in 1905:

"Tucker Foley was killed in about two miles of where Moulton now stands, and was buried under a big live oak tree. Father dug his grave with a butcher knife and wrapped him in a saddle blanket made out of cotton. When father found him, he was naked, had been scalped, and was hanging to a tree, tied up by his hamstrings. Nearly all the people in Lavaca County pursued the Indians, over took them and had a big fight. There were about thirty-seven men from Gonzales; my father was among the number who were joined by other volunteers. Mason Foley brought back his brother's horse and rifle; he said he killed the Indian that had them, and that he believed he was the one that killed his brother. I saw the horse and rifle several years afterward; the horse was a bay, and the rifle was a flint-rock rifle. Mase told me after the fight was over he killed all the squaws and tried to find his brother's scalp, but it was lost."

Andrew Ponton (1804-1850) was born in Amherst County, Virginia and went to the DeWitt Colony, Gonzales County, Texas in 1829 from Boonville, Cooper County, Missouri with his parents, two sisters and others. Andrew's parents were William Ponton (1772-1834) and Isabella Mooreland (1782-1860), a native of Pennsylvania. William was killed by a stray band of Indians May 20, 1834 where he and a friend John Hays were cutting poles for a crib. The daughters were: Polly "Mary" Jane Patrick (1810 near Lovingston, Nelson County, Virginia-1837 San Felipe, Austin Colony) married May 29, 1828 James Blair Patrick in Cooper County, Missouri; and Sarah Ann (September 16, 1820 Boonville, Cooper County, Missouri) who married Horace Eggleston. Andrew married July 8, 1841 Mary H. Berry in Columbus, Colorado County, Republic of Texas with his brother Joel Ponton, a minister of the Disciples of Christ Church, performing the ceremony. He died July 4, 1850 and was buried in the Gonzales Masonic Cemetery where the Texas Centennial Commission erected an Historical Marker on his grave in 1936. His brother Joel (July 3, 1802 near Lovingston, Amherst County, Virginia) married January 5, 1827 in Cooper County, Missouri Sarah Ann Reavis (June 8, 1794 August 31, 1837), a native of Rutherford County, North Carolina, and died in Gonzales County. The school where Andrew received his education has not been found.

In 1835 Andrew was elected Alcalde of Gonzales, and in September he was a member of the Gonzales Committee for Safety. The Mexican government had furnished a cannon for the protection of Gonzales' inhabitants against Indians; in 1835 Mexico sent soldiers to Gonzales to get the cannon or bring Ponton to San Antonio as a hostage. He put them off, and the final result was that he sent a very diplomatic letter of why he could not return the cannon. He was a farmer, stockman, politician and judge. He was the first chief justice of Gonzales County, a member of the Second Congress, House of Representatives in Houston for the County of Gonzales 1837-1838. He was elected the first chief justice of Lavaca County when it was formed in 1846. His land grant was issued June 18, 1832 and was located on the Gonzales-Lavaca County line. Andrew Ponton and his son Thomas Jefferson were members of the Masonic Order A.F. & A.M. Andrew and Mary had four children: William W. (1842) joined the Confederate army in 1862 and was soon released for a disability; Andrew S. (1845-1862) joined the Confederate army in September, 1861 and was killed in the battle at Atlanta in 1862; Thomas Jefferson Ponton Sr. (April 6, 1847 Gonzales County-December 9, 1889 Gonzales) after his high school education studied law and became a prominent attorney in Gonzales County, married February 27, 1872 in Gonzales Martha "Mattie" Kentuckey Brown (1849-1887) and had seven children with descendants later living in California and Florida; and Samuel Virgin (1849 1856). JOHN H. HARKINS was born in Christian County, Ky., August 27, 1833, and is a son of John and Eunice (Mitchell) Harkins, both natives of Christian County, and of English descent. John Harkins, after attaining his majority, bought a farm in Christian County, where he was engaged in farming for many years. Later, he sold the place, and moved to Muhlenburgh County, Ky., where he bought another farm, on which he resided until his death, in 1870, in his sixty-seventh year. He was for several years constable in Christian County, and was a member of the United Baptist Church. Mrs. Eunice Harkins died in 1843.

Research Notes:
In 2009 when John had his YDNA test the results came back as match to a Shelton in Y37 and Y67 tests. No common denominator was found.
On Feb 27, 2013, a tester in the Oglesby group was a match to him in the Y37, with a step 2 match. As it turned out, in the Shelton gedcom there was a marriage of Mary Elizabeth to Gustavas Adolphus Oglesby. Checking the tester's pedigree, his ancestor Jesse Oglesby and Gustavas descend from Constant, Sr., Jesse and Constant being brothers; making Jesse the great-uncle of Gustavas.
Following the pedigree of the Shelton tester, his ancestor was Winfield Scott Shelton who carried the maiden name of his unwed mother, Lucinda. Lucinda was sister to Mary Elizabeth who married Gustavus 1 year after Winfield Scott was married.
Gustavus was in Henderson County in the 1850 census in the same extended family community as Lucinda who was still at home with her parents. He was living with his brother Stephen and they were next door to one of Lucinda's older sisters who was already married.
The name Winfield Scott was a well-known general of the time, and as was the custom, it was popular to name their children after public personalities. The name Winfield Scott was used by at least two or three more Oglesby siblings; so it was a name they liked to use. The Sheltons did not use the name, just another hint that an Oglesby was influential in the choosing of the name.
Lucinda later had a son Albert, who, as I understand, was DNA tested and was not a match to Winfield. The Shelton tester did not match any Sheltons because that was the maternal line. He matched the Oglesby line.
It's quite obvious that Winfield's father was an Oglesby; and it's more likely than not that the father was Gustavus as his brothers were not so likely a candidate. Since he married a year later and started his own family with Lucinda's sister, it's doubtful that Lucinda's following children were fathered by him. The girls may or may not have the same father as Albert.

Gustavus married Lucinda Shelton(maybe father, not married). Lucinda (daughter of Josiah Cyrus Shelton and Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Orran) was born in 1833 in Rockingham Co, North Carolina; died before 1903 in Webster Co, Kentucky. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Gustavus married Mary Elizabeth Shelton, (Y-DNA step 2 match) on 14 Apr 1852 in Webster Co, Kentucky. Mary (daughter of Josiah Cyrus Shelton and Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Orran) was born on 2 May 1833 in Pittsylvania, Virginia; died on 25 Feb 1915; was buried in Bordley Cem, Bordley, Union Co, Kentucky. Mrs. Emily Lincoln Cook, 72 years old, wife of William G Cook 210 North Sheridan Road died at 11:15 o'clock Tuesday night at her home. Mrs Cook had resided in Peoria for 5 years.

She was the daughter of John and Sarah Oglesby and was born in Xenia, ILL., April 20, 1865. Her marriage to Mr Cook occurred July 6, 1889 in Springfield, MO.

Mrs Cook is survived by her husband, three nieces Mrs Lee Boniface Los Angeles, Calif, Mrs Rena Jones Benkleman, Neb, and Mrs Howard Armbright Peoria and two nephews Richard Oglesby Peoria, and George Oglesby Macomb, ILL.

Do you know how she's connected to this couple? I'm attempting to determine her parents' names, family, etc. She married George Bedford Heflin in 1854.

Research Notes:
John B. is shown in some trees as son of Daniel and Nancy Sprague. Study of the census records show Daniel had a son Jonathan born the same year (1857) and living in Shilo, Union Co, Kentucky. Daniel shows a son Jonathan in 1860 and 1870, both Union County.

However, in 1870 in Ohio Co, Kentucky there is a John B., same age, who is shown to be son of John Knight Oglesby. On the other hand; John B. not shown in John K's family in 1860, but neither was a daughter Rachel F. Subject: Update--date of death for John B. Oglesby

Regarding John B. Oglesgy, I've just been on the phone with the West Lawn Cemetery in Henryetta, Okmulgee county, Oklahoma regarding the possible grave site of John B. and have found that he is indeed buried next to Lena, but without a headstone. He died on the 30th of July in 1925.

The woman I spoke with at the library was very helpful and states there are three other Oglesbys in West Lawn:

Dorothy, Melody and William. I didn't ask her where their graves were located and when they died as I felt she was more than helpful with the original information I requested, and I don't have those names in my genealogy research except for William, and I know he's buried in McAlester with his wife, Sarah.

Died:
Joseph P. Ponton died at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, March 21, 1921 after an illness of three or four days' duration, at the home of his son, Jno. Ponton, Thorndale, Texas, being 83 years , eleven months and twenty days old. The funeral service was held at he residence, conducted by Rev. W.S. Elliott, Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock, and the remains were laid away in the family burying ground at Mesquite. Mr. Ponton was a native of Texas, being born in Lavaca County in 1837, and married Miss Jane Bownds July 16th, 1856. Of the six children born to this union two are now living - Joseph P. Ponton, Jr. of Gardner, and John Ponton of this city with home he made his home. In the early days of Texas history he taught school and later on engaged in farming. He fought for a lost cause in the Confederate army, and became a good and useful citizen after the war clouds had rolled by. Among his personal characteristics might be mentioned that he never had a shave and a barber never cut his hair, while the only time a physician ever visited him professionally was during his last illness. Mr. Ponton was a member of the Christian church and no better epitaph can be written at the end of any life than "It is will with my soul."
