    The many friends of Mrs Bettie Chafin were grieved to hear of her death Tuesday at the home of her son, Palo, in Cookeville. She had been in feeble health for several months as a result of heart dropsy.
    Elizabeth Gaines Young was born February 3, 1849 and died August 6, 1935. She was the oldest child of John and Helen Turner Young and was born and reared about 8 miles from Gainesboro.
    She was married to James Chaffin December 23, 1871; to this union were born 2 daughters and 2 sons. The daughters (Mrs Helen Williams and Ella Ligon) passed on several years ago.
    Her husband died more than 8 years ago.
    Her two sons, John and Palo, are well known farmers living near Cookeville. She also leaves one brother, Turner Young, Scottsville, Ky; and 3 sisters, Mrs Ellen Jaquess, Harriman; Mrs Winnie Pippin, Jackson county; [last sister not listed].
    She joined the Christian church as a young girl and lived faithful to the end. A noble trait of her character was her love for and kindness to all little children. She was never known to mistread one no matter how ugly it behaved.
    She was laid to rest in the Young cemetery near old Shiloh in Jackson county, beside her husband and other relatives.

    Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a. m. today (Thursday) in the Chapel of Carver Funeral Home for John H. Chaffin, 80, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Russell Dale, on Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Chaffin had been ill only about ten days before his death.
    Mr. Chaffin was born in Allen County, KY and was reared in Jackson County, TN. Most of his adult life head been spent in Putnam County. For many years he was employed by the Tennessee Central Railroad but in later years was a farmer.
    He was a member of the Church of Christ.
    Survivors include one brother, Palo Chaffin, Cookeville; and two daughers, Mrs. A. A. Allen and Mrs. Russell Dale, Cookeville.
    Interment will be in Cookeville City Cemetery

    COOKEVILLE - Funeral services for Claud S. Chaffin, 79, of Cookeville will be held tomorrow, January 10, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Dyer Funeral Home. Burial will be in Crest Lawn Cemetery.
    Mr. Chaffin died Monday January 8, 1990 at Masters Health Care Center.
    Born in Jackson County on August 17, 1910, he was the son of the late Palo Patrick and Amanda Holman Chaffin.
    Mr. Chaffin was a retired mechanical contractor.
    His family includes his wife, Byrda Chaffin of Cookeville; two sons, Ralph Chaffin of Cookeville and Jerry Chaffin of Mount Juliet; three daughters, Virginia Reed of Cookeville, Shirley Goodwin of Michigan and Nell Thomas of California; 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
    Mr. Chaffin's grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
    The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 5 p.m. today.
    Johnny Fox will officate at the services.

    COOKEVILLE--Funeral services for Shirley Grace Goodwin, 68, of the Dodson Branch Community of Jackson County, will be held today, Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Hooper and Huddleston Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Cookeville City Cemetery.

    The family will receive friends after 9 a.m. today.

    Mrs. Goodwin died on Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

    She was born on Nov. 16, 1931, in Putnam County to the late Claude and Byrda Mills Chaffin. Mrs. Goodwin was a homemaker and a member of the Zion Church of Christ.

    Her family includes her husband, Verble Goodwin; a daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Monroe Beasley of Dodson Branch; two sisters, Virginia Reed of Smithville and Nell Thomas of Cookeville; two brothers, Ralph Chaffin of Cookeville and Jerry Chaffin of Brush Creek; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Debbie and Jason Moss; and one great-grandchild, Kori Moss, all of Dodson Branch.

    Pallbearers will be Jimmy and Johnny Chaffin, Harold Brown, Tony and Terry Mayberry, Ray Goodwin; and Gary Loftis.
