Hello, Courts people!

I've been chatting with a Fruge (also Frugia inter al.) descendant who is
probably also a Johnson descendant via Mary (Johnson)(Hayes) Gallier, a
sister of the Annie who married Thomas Court II. I asked her if she could
connect the Pierre Frugia who married Julia Ann Courts to her family, but
she can't. Her Frugia ancestor was a Pierre V. who had a son named Pierre
"Peter", and she thought maybe it was the younger Pierre who married Julia
Ann, but I think it unlikely since Julia was born circa 1856 and he circa
1876. But who knows when the chemistry is right, as they say?

Does anyone have any info that might tell us who Julia Ann's Pierre
belonged to? All I have on them right now is that they were married ... no
dates, places, or kiddies.

Fruge (actually Fruge' with an acute accent on the e) is the original
French surname which is pronounced roughly "froo-zhay". It appears in LA
and TX records as Fregia, Frezia, Frugia, Frusha, Frugea, and probably
other variants.

The Denise Frugea who married Jacob Stampley Cole Sr belongs to the same
Fruge family to which belongs the Pierre Virgile Frugia who settled in
Jefferson Co, TX. I don't know the names of the parents of the Susan Fruge
who married Jacob Gallier. Pierre Virgile had a sister named Arthemise,
but I don't know who she married.

Pierre Virgile married a daughter of Munson Bowes in Jefferson Co, in case
anybody is chasing Boweses.

Conclusions of Fact. The evidence in the record shows without dispute the following facts: (1) That on the night of the 18th of May, 1902, Zeb Frugia, in the corporate limits of the city of Beaumont, Texas, while riding horseback towards his home, rode on appellant's railroad track, at a place generally used by the public with the knowledge and acquiescence of appellant, and he and his horse were struck, run over and killed by one of appellant's engines drawing one of its trains. (2) That an ordinance of said city makes it unlawful for an engineer or other persons in charge of a locomotive or train to run the same within its corporate limits at a greater rate of speed than six miles an hour, and provides that any person violating the ordinance shall, upon conviction be fined not less than five nor more than one hundred dollars. Another ordinance of the city provides that any person who causes, permits or suffers any locomotive engine to run within the limits of the city at a greater rate of speed than six miles an hour, or who causes, permits or suffers any locomotive, engine to run or move in the night time without having a headlight, or who shall cause, permit or suffer a locomotive engine or train to run at any time without causing the proper signals to be given, shall be fined not less than one nor more than one hundred dollars. (3) That Jane Furgia is the widow, and the other appellees the minor children of the deceased.

The evidence is reasonably sufficient to show the following additional facts: (1) That appellant's servants operating the engine negligently failed to keep a lookout for persons along the railroad track where the deceased was struck by its locomotive; (2) that it negligently permitted the engine which struck deceased to be run within the corporate limits of the city of Beaumont at a greater rate of speed than six miles an hour, and without a headlight; (3) that the concurrence of all or some of these acts of negligence was the proximate cause of Zeb Frugia's death; (4) that deceased was not a trespasser on appellant's track and was not guilty of negligence proximately contributing to his injury: and (5) that by reason of appellant's negligently causing the death of deceased, appellees, his surviving wife and children, sustained damages in the amount assessed by the jury.

Goldie, who we called Nan Nan, was the kindest person I've ever known. She was a wonderful Christian and I was proud to call her my grandmother. However she was my natural grandmothers next door neighbor and best friend and never felt like she deserved to be called Grandma because she wasn't our "real" grandmother, so Nan Nan it was, although no one could have wanted for a more loving grandmother. She actually helped the doctor deliver my mother (at home, of course). The family legend always said when my mother was born that her mother told Goldie "If it's another red headed baby you can have it." and as it happened my mother was red headed when she was born. My mother was only 7 when her mother died in 1936. A few years later Goldie's 1st husband died and she subsequently married my grandfather. She's been gone for 30 years now and I still get a lump in my throat when I think about her.

Goldie Frugia was married to Walter Louie Baldwin on 15 March 1916 in Beaumont, Texas. Walter was a carpenter and in 1928 he and 2 other carpenters bought property next to each other in Vidor, Texas. In a short time they had built a 1 room frame house on each property. One of those families was John and Axie Brian who moved into their new home next door to the Baldwins over Easter weekend, 1928. The next month Axie gave birth to her second child in their new home and Goldie Baldwin helped the doctor deliver the baby. Axie and John had a 7 year old son, Loice, who had curly red hair and Axie joked that if this was another red headed baby that Goldie could have it. As it happened the baby girl WAS red headed. Axie died almost 8 years later and Goldie looked after the daughter and, following Walter's death in 1940, she married Axie's widower, John Talmage Brian, on 8 April 1944. She never had children of her own but was the most wonderful step mother to the red headed baby who ironically became hers just as Axie had promised when she was born. She was also the most loving grandmother to the children of that little girl. She taught kindness, patience and love. Goldie preferred to stand in the shadows and never thought she deserved to be called Grandma since she had been close to Axie and never wanted to detract from her memory. Instead she was lovingly known as Nan-Nan to her grandchildren although the world has never known anyone more deserving of being called Grandma. She was an humble servant of the Lord and truly earned her rewards in heaven. We love you and miss you, Nan-Nan.

Susan Agnes Friebel (nee Gallier) was born to Theresa Ursula and Jacob John Gallier on June 21, 1917 in Beaumont, TX. I was 8 years old at this time. My brothers and I were sent to spend the night with Aunt Catherine and Uncle Presto Gallier. He was our father's uncle and they lived about a mile from us. They had 2 boys, Albert and Ray. Presto owned a grocery store and of course most of our groceries were bought from him. One of us kids was usually sent to pay the bill and he would always give us a big bag of candy and other goodies (lagniappe it was called) as was the custom at that time.

The Story of Susan A. Friebel's Life: The Early Years

Susan Agnes Friebel (nee Gallier) was born to Theresa Ursula and Jacob John Gallier on June 21, 1917 in Beaumont, TX. I was 8 years old at this time. My brothers and I were sent to spend the night with Aunt Catherine and Uncle Presto Gallier. He was our father?s uncle and they lived about a mile from us. They had 2 boys, Albert and Ray. Presto owned a grocery store and of course most of our groceries were bought from him. One of us kids was usually sent to pay the bill and he would always give us a big bag of candy and other goodies (lagniappe it was called) as was the custom at that time.

Chiefly Southern Louisiana and Southeast Texas: a small gift given with a purchase to a customer, by way of compliment or for good measure; bonus.]

The next morning when we were walking home one of our neighbors called out to us ?I hear you have a little girl at your house.? I must have been awfully stupid. I didn't even know mama was expecting and wondered who the little girl was. Was I surprised--- a baby girl and it was ours. I don't remember my brother's reaction, but I was overjoyed. I had always wished for a sister.

By the time she was two years old she was pretty spoiled. Mom always made me take care of her when I got home from school. There were several girls about my age in the neighborhood, but who wanted to play with someone who always had a bratty sister tagging along. I didn't have very many close friends. Mom, many years later used to tell people that I couldn't wait to get home and play with my little sister. I almost called her down on it several times, but I didn't. It made a good story and that's probably the way she remembered it.

As you know, Sue and I did become very close later. She was never called anything but Susan until we came to California. Alice [Lee] Lacour still calls her Susan when she writes. Paper would not allow it. That was his mother's name, although hers was spelled Suzan.

Mom did quite a lot of sewing in those days and when Susan started school she was well dressed. Two dresses I remember: One was solid pink with a pink check yoke and the other the pink check was gathered into a solid pink yoke. When she got a little older she made us outfits alike-- culottes, knee high divided skirts with wide legs and suspended shoulder straps. Girls didn't wear long trousers then? Heaven's NO!

Since I was 8 years older than she and in high school in another building when she started school, I asked two of her close friends to fill in that period and they graciously did.

Ovia Mack was involved in an accident in which Miss Beulah Floy Bledsoe, age 30, Memorial librarian, was killed and two other young Port Arthur women were injured. They were Miss Louise Pfeiffer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P.C. Pfeiffer, and Miss Helen Green of Cameron, both Port Arthur school teachers. O.M. was charged with drunken driving.

Miss Helen Green Awarded $4175 by jury
Beaumong - 58th district court jury late Wednesday awarded Miss Helen Green damages of $4175 in her suit against Miss Louise Pfeiffer in connection with injuries suffered in an automobielie collision Nov 10, 1934.
Miss Green, a Port Arthur school teacher, was injured when Miss Pfeiffer's car in which she and the late Miss Beulah Floy Bledsoe were riding, met another automobile in a head-on crash two miles north of Nederland. Miss Pfeiffer also is a teacher in the Port Arthur schools.
The ijury found that just prior to the collision, Miss Pfeiffer drove her car in the left of the center of the highway in an attempt to pass an automobile headed in the same direcction.
Another finding of the jury was that although O.M. Cuniff of Sout Lake, driver with whom Miss Pfeiffer collided, was under the influence of intoxicating liquor, his intoxication was not the "sole prolmute crust" of the accident. Cuniff, last spring, was convicted in criminal district court of driving while drunk and was assessed a suspended sentence.

A second damage suit growing out of the collision is docketed for trial next week in 60th district court. Mrs. Ella Bledsoe of Port Arthur seeks $10,000 in damages for the death of Miss Bledsoe, her daughter and Port Arthur city librarian, in the wreck. The suit names Miss Pfeiffer as defendant.
