John, age 14, male, born in Indiana, was attending school.

Elias, age 10, male, born in Indiana, was also attending school.

Zurilla (or Zerilda or Jerilda) was age 8, female, born in Indiana. She apparently was not attending school.

Margaret, age 7, female, born in Indiana, was not attending school.

Frederick, age 10, male, born in Indiana.

Someone named Susan Hagger, age 12, female, born in North Carolina, attending school, also lived in the household. I don't know who she is or what her connection was with the Anderson family.

Sarah Hagger, age 10, female, born in North Carolina and attending school lived there as well. She appears to be a sister of Susan.

Last, but not least, is Emily Anderson, age 2/12, female, born in Indiana.

Hi, Sherry,

I noticed that some of your information on Hugh Anderson and his first wife Hannah Wood could use some updating.

I am a direct descendent of Hugh Anderson and Hannah Wood Anderson (daughter of Elias Wood and Frances Chittum) through John Evan(s) Anderson (1846-1918) and Mary Jane (Jenny) Cottrell (1852-1919). John and Jenny divorced. John moved to Ohio after the war and married Elizabeth Catherine Faulkner , widow of Zimri Haines. John and Elizabeth had a son together named John Russell Anderson (1893-1974). Jenny had already moved to Kansas and married her cousin James Cottrell.

To the best of my knowledge there is no known middle name for Hannah Wood Anderson, though she did have a daughter Margaret (born about 1853), about whom I have no information.


It appears that Hannah may have died in 1853 or 1854 (or ran off, never to be heard from again) because Hugh appears to have married Isephine Allis in Henry County on October 30, 1855. (Unfortunately, there was more than one Hugh Anderson in nearby Indiana Counties, so I can't be positive yet.) Two years later (17 June 1858) My Hugh married Margaret Barnard in Henry County. Emily Anderson was born in 1860 (approximately in May, as she was 2 months ol on July 28th) -- I believe her mother was very likely Margaret Barnard Anderson, who was slightly older than Hugh. Margaret was listed as having been born in North Carolina, whereas my ancestor Hannah was a Virginian. Two Hugger girls living with Margaret and Hugh were also born in North Carolina, though all the other children in the home were born in Indiana. This suggests that Margaret may have been married previously, but I haven't really cared enough to check it out. Margaret seems to have disappeared after the 1860 census.


In 1865 Hugh married Sarah Kuhn, widow of Daniel Connor and assumed guardianship of her children (Susan, John, Nancy, and Mary.) There are extensive records at Fold 3 regarding the guardianship and Daniel's Civil War service and death. Sarah was the only grandmother that my grandma and her sisters ever knew.


In regards to the rest of Hugh and Hannah's children, here is what I know:
Young Frederick died on 15 March 1873, of consumption after an injury in Henry County.
Elias Wood Anderson (1847-1925) moved to Texas after (or in conjunction with his military service) and married Anna Daly. After her death, he married her widowed sister Kate Daly Slattery. Elias and Anna had two children, which her sister helped raise along with her own.
Zerilda (1849-1898) married Edwin Irving (1845-1920) in Henry County in August 1866. This was his second marriage and her first. If the marriage notations are correct, then Zerilda may have been a stepdaughter because her parents are listed as Wm. Anderson and S. Wood. Or, more likely, which would have been consistent with DNA matches, Hugh's first name may really have been William and he just went by Hugh. There may also be some transcription trouble.
