According to "Colonial Virginians and Their Maryland Relatives" by Norma TUCKER:

] William STONE left Accomack County, Virginia in 1633 to become high sheriff of Northumberland County, Virginia. In 1648 Lord BALTIMORE commissioned him to become Governor of Maryland, the first Protestant governor of the state. When he move from Virginia to Maryland, he took with him about 500 non-conformists from Norfolk County, Virginia. He was the nephew of Thomas STONE, merchant haberdasher of London. When William STONE came to America he brought with him his brothers John, Mathew, Andrew and Robert to Accomack County, Virginia- none of whom left children.

Wm. Stone (b. in Northamptonshire. Eng., 1603, d. in Md. 1660) was the son of Capt. John Stone who had interests both in Mass. and on the Eastern Shore of Va. and who "was killed by the Pequods on the Connecticut River while returning to his home in Va." William Stone came to the Eastern Shore about 1632, was a justice in 1633, member of the first recorded Vestry of Hungar's Parish in 1635, and in 1648 was commissioned Governor of Maryland, to which colony he then removed. Proprietary Governor of Maryland appointed by Lord Baltimore

Gov. William Stone (c. 1603-c. 1659/60) and Verlinda Stone

William Stone served as Marylands first Protestant Governor, and he and his wife Verlinda both took action to preserve freedom of religion inMaryland.

William Stone was born in England around 1603 and came from a well-known merchant family in London. However, William chose to come to America, and migrated to Virginia in 1628. He was successful there, working as amerchant and planter. He was respected by his neighbors and was appointedjustice of the peace and then sheriff in Accomack County, Virginia.

He also served as a burgess in the Virginia Assembly. However, when civil war broke out in England, many Protestants who supported the Parliamentwere no longer welcome in Virginia, which supported the King. At thistime, Lord Baltimore, the proprietor of Maryland, began trying to attractmore settlers to Maryland, and many Protestants left Virginia.

William Stone and his wife Verlinda came to Maryland in 1648. That same year Stone was given a great opportunity. With civil war still going onin England and with many new Protestant settlers in Maryland, Lord Baltimore wanted to appoint a Protestant Governor. He chose William Stone, probably partly to reward Stone for promising to bring hundreds ofsettlers to Maryland. Stone served as Governor for six years until someof the more radical Protestants, called Puritans, gained control of the government and began to pass laws which restricted religious freedom.

Stone decided he needed to fight back, so he organized about 100 supporters and marched against the rebels in the Battle of Severn. He was greatly outnumbered, and after losing nearly half his men and beingwounded in the shoulder, Stone surrendered. He was made a prisoner andheld for over a month.

While he was in captivity, his wife Verlinda tried to help him by writing to Lord Baltimore. She made sure the proprietor knew exactly whathappened so he could protect both her husband and the colony. Stone waseventually released from prison and resumed his position as Governor. Hedied in 1660, leaving 14,950 pounds of tobacco for his wife and seven children.

Verlinda soon started acquiring more land for her family. In 1664 she patented 300 acres of land in Charles County which she called Virlinda and two years later bought 500 more acres in what is now Prince Georges County. She lived in the colony which she and her husband had fought to preserve up until her death in 1675.

    Notes:

John Stone, son of William and Verlinda (Cotton or Graves) Stone, was born in Accomac County, Virginia, and was brought to Maryland by his parents in 1648. Circumstances point to the fact that he had three wives, the first one being Elizabeth (???), who is sometime believed to be the daughter of Thomas Warren who died in 1684. John Stone with his wife Elizabeth was present at the negotiation of his brother's will in 1676.

To this union was born two sons, inasmuch as a subsequent deed states that Thomas was the only brother of John of the "whole blood". Matthew was therefore of another marriage. The children of the third union are proved by the fact that his widow was made the guardian of "her" children as well as the executrix of their estates.

John Stone was deeded by his brother, Richard, in 1664 for natural love and affections 500 acres of land on the east side of the Chesapeake Bay on the south side of the Sassafras River. The deed was witnessed by Thomas MANNING, Thomas Sprigg, and Humphrey Warren.

On June 11, 1667, John Stone, Gent., appeared at the Perogative Court and took the oath before Charles Calvert as administrator of the estate of his deceased brother, Richard Stone, Gent.

On March 2, 1668, a warrant was issued to John Stone and his brother Thomas to appraise the estate of Thomas Burdit, deceased, late of Charles County. VERLINDA Burdit, the relict, was granted letters of administration, and her oath was duly recorded before Joseph Harrison, Gent. A return of the inventory was made on May 14, 1668, at which time it showed that Josias Lambert was an appraiser instead of Thomas Stone.

As early as 1670 John Stone was Gentleman Justice of the Quorum in Charles County; in 1682 he signed a petition as one of His Majesty's Protestant subjects. During 1687 he was again a commissioner of the peace, and from 1678 to 1688 he represented his county in the General Assembly.1 He was a member of the commission for the advancement of trade in the Province, and in 1689 he was on the committee to regulate civil affairs in Charles County. Another public office, though minor, was coroner of Charles County in 1678.

    This shows his approximate age.

    Will:
The will of John Stone was dated September 17, 1697, and was proved in Charles County on August 10, 1698, by the testimony of Joseph MANNING, Philip Briscoe, and Notley Warren. His widow, Eleanor, and his son, Thomas, were named as executors. The latter was to administer upon his own estate and that of his two brothers, Matthew and John, while his widow was to administer upon her own estate and that of her children.

Thomas and Walter received equally the dwelling-plantation, a 500-acre portion of "Poynton Manor", and 80 acres of "St. John's" adjoining. Walter was to have the portion of "Poynton Manor" whereon stood the homestead after the decease of his mother.

Matthew and John were devised "Mangawoman" of 500 acres. Eleanor and Elizabeth were devised 400 acres of "Durwin". His widow received one-third of the personal estate. The overseers were Captain John Bayne, Major William Dent, Gerard Fowke, and William Stone.

At a subsequent account by his widow and executrix mention is made of "seven" children. His widow married subsequently Hugh Tears. The latter in his will of 1699 named his wife, Eleanor, as well as Eleanor and Elizabeth Stone. The widow married thirdly on June 22, 1700, John Beall or Beale.

Thomas Stone, son of John and Elizabeth Stone, was born in Charles Countyduring 1677, according to a deposition made in 1721. He married first Martha, the daughter of Colonel Philip Hoskins. The latter died in 1714,and besides appointing Thomas Stone as the overseer of his estate, he named as heirs his grandson Thomas Stone and daughter Martha Stone.Oswald Hoskins, son of Colonel Philip Hoskins, died in 1721 and named bywill his brother-in-law Thomas Stone as the overseer of his estate, andat the same time mentioned his sister Martha Stone. The fact that he named only two children in his will and referred to other children makes it difficult to establish an absolute list.

    ----------------------------
In 1715 he, as Captain Thomas Stone being a member of the Assembly, signed a petition to His Excellency on the death of the Queen and also the petition upon the ascendancy of His Majesty, George I, to the throne.

Some researchers give Martha Hoskins as the wife of Thomas Stone, but Martha was still unmarried and single 4 Sep 1730 when she received her share of the estate of her sister Mary Hoskins. Jane and Benedicta Hoskins were the only unmarried daughters old enough to be the mother of Thomas Stone's and Robert Hanson's children. Because of the names of the descendants, I have arbitrarily given Jane to Thomas Stone and Benedicta to Robert Hanson.

He married Rachel, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Barton) Smoot, of William and Mary Parish, Charles County.(*) In 1714 Rachel Stone was named as a granddaughter in the will of Colonel William Barton, so therefore the marriage occurred prior to that date.

Matthew Stone and Robert Hanson in 1713 were sureties for Mary Theobald, the executrix of the estate of John Theobald, late of Charles County. On May 23, 1726, Matthew Stone, Gent., and Rachel his wife for 6,000 pounds of tobacco conveyed to John Watts land lying on the west side of the main portion of Nanjemoy Creek, situated between the

lands of the said Matthew Stone and William Stone. On May 13, 1747, he conveyed for the consideration of natural love and affections which he held for his son Thomas "Jr.", a portion of "Poynton Manor", adjoining the lands of Matthew Stone, Thomas Matthews, and Barton Stone. Rachel Stone, his wife, acknowledged the deed and waived dower.

Matthew Stone dated his will November 7, 1748, at which time he appointed his sons Barton and Thomas as the executors. Rachel his wife was devised the dwelling-plantation during life then equally to his sons Samuel and William. His daughters Anne and Elizabeth were bequeathed various personalty, while Mr. Porteus was appointed the guardian of his young son William. The will was admitted to probate in Charles County on August 10, 1750, and proved by William Hanson, Mary Hanson, and John Jenkins.

Rachel Stone, however, was appointed executrix and certified to the inventory on November 3, 1750, with John Stone and Barton Stone as the kinsmen. Gustavus Brown and Walter Brown were the greatest creditors.

The final statement was rendered to the court on September 14, 1751, when the proceeds were distributed among the widow and the following heirs--Samuel Stone, William Stone, Elizabeth Stone, and Anne Stone. David Stone and John Stone were bondsmen for the widow and executrix.

The will of his widow was dated September 8, 1756, and admitted to probate in Charles County on November 6, 1758, by Maximillan Matthews, John B. Meek, and Jesse Douglas. She appointed her sons, Samuel and William, as executors, and named her daughter, Elizabeth Stone.

On January 15, 1759, an inventory of her personal estate was made with John Stone and Barton Stone as the kinsmen, and Samuel Stone and William Stone, as the executors.

Judge Samuel Hanson was buried at Equality, an estate then owned by his son-in-law, David Stone, "the inheritor of Poynton Manor, with Court Leetand Court Baron," a lineal descendant and representative of Governor William Stone, and the great-grandfather of the Hon. Frederick Stone, of Port Tobacco, MD.

David's birth date is traditionally given as 18 Mar 1709. I was told that date came from his tombstone which is no longer in existence. David witnessed this deed 6 Apr 1727, meaning he should have been over 21 onthat date.

This David Stone was born around 1709 and died March 18, 1779. He was married to one of the Hansons, and then to Elizabeth Jenifer. He had quite a few children by his second marriage, e.g. Thomas Stone, John Hoskins Stone, Michael Jenifer Stone, and so forth. Josiah Stone and Samuel Stone were attributed to the marriage to, presumably, Sarah Hanson.

Another question, Josiah married Mary Washington Donelson or Donaldson during the American Revolution and lived in Culpeper Co., VA before moving to Kentucky around 1798. Does anyone know anything about her family?
Specifically was she from Maryland or Virginia?

Right now I am particularly interested in finding Josiah Stone of Charles Co.--it is assumed he is David Stone's son, but there is no documentation that I have found. Also, one of the Hansons is supposed to be the first wife of David Stone, but which one?

    Notes:

In a letter to Charles H. Stone, dated 15 October 1941, Harry Wright Newman (author of Stones of Poynton Manor) wrote:

Captain Thomas Stone, 1677-1727, was seized of land in King George County, Va. I have record of his leasing it, but not selling it. Captain Stone does not name all the children in his will, leaving David the landed estate in Maryland, but referred to other unnamed children. At that time Thomas Stone, Jr., who received no land in Maryland, could have been well-established in Virginia. There is evidence of 200 acres of land in the name of Thomas Stone, and it is quite possible that Captain Thomas Stone executed a deed of gift in King George County to Thomas, and that was the incentive for Thomas settling in Virginia.

Newman is apparently referring here to property in King George County that Captain Thomas inherited from his brother John by will dated 27 January 1702. Newman says that Captain Thomas leased 500 acres of this property to William Thornton, Gent., of King George County, but does not indicate the date of the lease. See Stones of Poynton Manor, p. 16

According to Charles H. Stone, Newman's comment (in his 1941 letter) on relocation of Thomas, Jr., to Virginia is "corroborated in Virginia records," for which Charles H. gives us the following "proof":

In Tyler's Historical Magazine, Vol. VIII, p. 80, we find: Book 1, p. 54 King George County 1721. Thomas Stone of Maryland, Gent., to Captain William Thornton 200 acres.

From here, wrote Charles H., we follow this Thomas Stone into Fauquier County, Va. He cites Fauquier during Proprietorship, p. 100:

Thomas Stone 1724, Sept. 22, 611 acres, corner to Waugh Darnell A 73, whose land was on Indian Cabin Branch, named among settlers of Rappahannock in 1724, which reached Carter's Run.

Note, however: (1) The Thomas who leased land to William Thornton in 1721 was probably Captain Thomas himself, rather than his son. Thomas Jr. could not have been born much before 1700, his mother having been born after 1684, and in all probability he was born a few years after 1700. In any event, he would have been either too young to have executed the transaction with Thornton or, if of age, still too young to have been styled "Gent."
    (2) The Thomas Stone who was "among the settlers of Rappahannock in 1724 might well have been the father of John and William Stone of Surry, but we have found no evidence that he was the son of Captain Thomas Stone.

We do have evidence to suggest that he was not the son of Captain Thomas Stone: According to "Warren of Virginia and Maryland," Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, 6:200-203 (1898), Thomas Stone, Jr., of Charles County, son of Captain Thomas Stone (i.e., brother of David Stone, who was father of the Signer), had a son, John, born 1748, who married Mary Warren, daughter of Robert Warren of Charles County. This is the John (son of Thomas, Jr., and grandson of Captain Thomas) who, according to Stones of Surry, is supposed to have been born nearly a quarter century earlier and is supposed to have married a Corder.

Conclusion: The paternity of John and William Stone of Surry is not known.

    --------------------
Although it is commonly stated that Thomas Stone, Gentleman, of Charles County, Maryland, and his wife, Jane Hoskins, daughter of Col. Philip Hoskins, had a son named Thomas, I am not aware of any documentation that substantiates this. In one probate document relating to the administration of Col. Philip Hoskins' estate, mention was made of his "three other grandchildren, children of Thomas Stone." In Thomas Stone's will, which was dated 25 May 1727, he also mentions or refers to only three children; David, Mary, and Anne (by naming her son, Gerrard Fowke). And, in the will of Thomas Stone's second wife, Katherine (Boughton) Thomas Stone, which was dated 26 October 1750, the same three children are again mentioned or alluded to; David (by naming his son, David, Jr.), and Thomas Stone's two daughters, now married, Mary Hanson, and Anne Fowke. Since Thomas Stone's second wife, Katherine, is not known to have had any children by her first husband, Benoni Thomas, it definitely appears that Thomas Stone of Charles County only had three children, none of which were named Thomas.

Several books, "The Stones of Surry," "Stones of Poynton Manor" and "Of the Stones" claim that this Thomas Stone of Fauquier Co. is the son of Capt. Thomas Stone of MD, grandson of Gov. William Stone through his son John Stone the elder of MD.

On April 29, 1760, she was granted letters of administration on the estate of her deceased husband, Harrison Musgrove, with Notley Warren and John Warren offering bond. The final settlement was made by her on May 15, 1762, as Mary Musgrove, and showed distribution to her and unnamed children.

The instrument was admitted to probate in Charles County on September 12, 1775, by Samuel Stone, Elizabeth Stone, and Theophilus Hanson.

The inventory of his personal estate was taken on May 31, 1776, with Mary Stone and Josiah Stone as the executors, and Barton Stone and Samuel Stone as the kinsmen.

His estate was distributed on November 5, 1776, to the widow, and the following representatives--William Stone, Josiah Stone, John Stone, Matthew Stone, Warren Stone, Elizabeth Stone, Barton Stone, and John Gray. The sureties for the executors were Thomas Stone and Edward Warren.

Before 1778 his widow with her Stone children either joined
or settled with her Musgrove children in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, then an undeveloped and outpost county of that State.

At the December term of court in 1778, Thomas Stone "one of the surviving administrators" of John Stone offered a petition setting forth the fact that the decease's estate was then in the hands of Mary Stone and Josias Stone and that most of it had been wasted or removed out of the State and that he "is in danger of suffering in the responsibility", and therefore the court ordered that the other executors be summoned to the next court. On February 12, 1779, Benjamin Philphott and Thomas Harris gave bond for Mary Stone, widow, and Josias Stone, executors of John Stone.

Although he was a minor in 1748, at the time his father negotiated his will, he was of sufficient age in 1759 to be made the executor of his mother's estate. During the Revolutionary War he served as a private in the Charles County militia under Captain Stinnett (Unpublished Maryland Records, vol. 2, p. 279). In 1783 he was a tax payer in Upper Durham Hundred.
