My name is Byrda Vandiver Woodard and I live in Abilene. My dad was Jess Vandiver, Birdie's son. The Buird nickname came from all the nieces and nephews calling her Aunt Buird (Burd) either I guess. Because Will Thomas was Jess's stepdad and Will and Birdie had 4 children a lot of people just thought that Jess and Thelma were Thomas's. Jess's dad, Bill Vandiver, died when Thelma was 3 and Jess was 1. Think Will and Birdie were married within a year or so because of the date of RJ's birth date. So Will was the only father my dad knew.

Byrda Mae Woodard, 73, passed away Wednesday, February 19, 2014 in Abilene. Her funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, February 24th in First Baptist Church Chapel, 1333 N. 3rd Street in Abilene with interment following in Elmwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 HWY 277 South, Abilene, Texas.

Byrda was born in Childress, Texas on April 7, 1940 where she grew up and graduated from high school. She married Floyd Woodard on March 20, 1971. She worked for Lone Star Gas for 33 years in both Childress and Wichita Falls before moving to Abilene in 1995 where she worked several years at Hardin-Simmons University. Byrda was a loving Christian wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed researching her family?s genealogy and doting on and spoiling her granddaughters.

Survivors include her husband Floyd Woodard of Abilene; her son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Jennifer Woodard of Abilene; her granddaughters, London, Mollie and Emmerson Woodard; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Her parents Jess and Lena Vandiver and her brother, Wendall Vandiver preceded her in death.

Mr. Vandiver was born April 16, 1942, in Childress to Jess Wendell and Lenna Lee Vandiver. He had worked for Texas A&M Research Center, Chevron/Texaco and Ford Country of Lewisville.

Survivors include his wife, Sandy Vandiver; three sons, Chuck Vandiver of Rockwall, Shawn Vandiver of Lubbock and Joe Weir of Colleyville; three daughters, Melynda Vandiver of Rowlett, Holly Hugo of Canyon Lake and Mindy Miller of Amarillo; 11 grandchildren; and a sister, Byrda Woodard of Abilene.
