    Notes:

    from John Reedy (1/31/05)
In regards to Moses Moore, and I'm not positive that this is our guy, but he is the only one that makes sense from a standpoint of time and place (to be a daddy to Nancy and to be in Augusta Co. VA) from Lyman Chalkley's "Chronicles of the Scots-Irish in Virginia", Lyman Chalkely, 1912, Moses Moore was a prisoner taken at the Jackson River in May, 1758 (by the Indians), and later in Augusta, Administration of his estate in Aug and appraisers in Nov, 1758 would seem to point out that he died, probably as a soldier at the end of that war. There is no mention of his wife Jane, (as supposedly given) nor any mention of a daughter Nancy.

Moses* married Jane (..) Moore about 1740. Jane was born about 1710; died after 1748. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    --------
Story of Moses II Moore's Life
Moses Moore was born about 1731 in Timber Ridge, Rockingham Co, VA and died about 1812.

Pioneer, hunter, trapper, soldier, patriot and Indian captive.

Moses Moore came from Timber Ridge, Rockbridge County, VA, about 1770 and settled here on a huge tract of land that he purchased from a man named Ewing for the sum of two steel traps and two pounds English sterling. In May 1758, while on one of his hunting trips, he was captured by the Indians at a place now called "Mossey Springs", near Cass, WV. He was taken to an Indian village near Chillicothe, OH, where he spent many months as a prisoner before he escaped. Moses returned to Rockbridge County, Virginia, where he was married on November 8,1761.

Moses Moore served in the Revolutionary War in 1780 as a private under command of Col. George Rogers Clark. He served with the Virginia Militia during Dunmore's War.

From William T. Price's Historical Sketches of Pocahontas Co, WV (reprinted by McClain Publishing, Parsons, WV, 1963; originally published by Price Brothers, Marlinton, WV, 1901):

"The progenitor of the largest relationship of the name in the county, came from what is now Timber Ridge, Rockbridge County,VA. At the time of the Drennan raid, when James Baker and the Bridger Boys were killed, Moses Moore was living on Swago, in sight of what is now the McClintic homestead. Pheobe, his youngest daughter remembered how the family refuged to the fort at Mill Point, and while the Drenanns and Moores and others were passing around the end of the mountain they heard the firing at the Bridger Notch, when the boys were killed. This would make it 1786 when James Baker, the first school teacher of Pocahontas, was killed. During the first years of his pioneer life in our region, he spent much time hunting and trapping along Back Alleghany, Upper Greenbrier River, and Clover Lick vicinity. He was a close observer of Indian movements, and would make a careful search for Indian movements and signs. Before resuming operations as the hunting seasons returned, the ususal place for the Indians to cross the Greenbrier, in the hunting grounds mentioned, was at a passage narrow enough from them to vault over with a long pole. Moore would take notice accordingly which side of the river the vaulting-pole would be on, and act accordingly. Finally the Indians seemed to have found out his strategy, and thereupon vaulted the narrow passageand cunningly threw the pole back on the other side. This threw the hunter off his guard. It was Saturday; he set his traps, looked after the deer signs, and arranged his camp. The venerable William Collins, yet living (as of 1901), is sure that the camping spot was on what is now the Charley Collins place, on the Greenbrier above the Cassell Fording, at a place near Tub Mill where he was captured by the wily Indians. It was the hunter's purpose to pass the Sabbath at his camp in quiet repose and devotional reading of the Bible he carried about with him for company. He had put a fat turkey to roast about daylight, and was reclining on a bear skin reading a lesson from the word, preparatory to a season of meditation and prayer before breakfast, a habit so charactersitic of the Scotch-Irish at that period. He was interrupted by the breaking of a stick, and upon looking intently and steadily in the direction whence the sound seemed to have come he saw five or six warriors aiming their guns and moving cautiously upon him. Seeing there was no chance of escape, hemmed in as he was, he threw up his hands and made signs for them to come to him. He put the turkey before them and made signs for them to eat. By gestures and gutteral gruntings they gave him to understand that they would not touch it unless he would eat some first. He did so, and thereupon they devoured it ravenously, and it was no time that scarcely a fragement remained, even of the bones. Soon as breakfast was over, they started for their home in Ohio. Having passed but a few miles, they halted at what the pioneers afterwards called the Mossey Spring. The spring - one of the most copious and beautiful of its kind - is near the residence of the late DavidMcLaughlin, four or five miles up the Back Alleghany road from Driftwood. The prisoner was securely bound with buffalo thongs and pinioned to the ground. A detachment went off in the direction of driftwood, and were absent two or three hours. When the party returned they were loaded with ore. This was carried to a place, where another halt was made and the ore was smelted and reduced in weight, so that one could carry what had required two to bring in as raw materials. The prisoner was taken as far as Chilacothe and the Indians seemed to have been greatly elated over thier capture. So much so that as a special compliment to their lady friends it was decided in solemn council of inquiry what to do with the prisoner, that the captive should run the gauntlet. The Indians seem to have known of nothing so intensely amusing than running the gauntlet, and of no compliment more flattering to their favorite lady friends than have them to form the gauntlet lines, and leave it to them to torment the captive. Accordingly two lines of squaws were drawn up about six or eight feet apart. One captive had preceded Moore, who was stabbed, bruised and hacked to pieces. This made him think it was only death any way. He entered the line and passed some distance, finally a squaw with a long handled frying pan struck him. He wrenched the pan from her and knocked her down with his fist and then striking left and right with the handle of the frying pan, he proceeded along the lines, and many of the other squaws ran away. When Moore had scattered them, the warriors crowded around him, patted and praised him, "good soldier," "good soldier," and decided that he should be allowed to live. By degrees he secured the confidence of his captors. In hunting he was very successful and the Indian who was his keeper would give him ammunition, a part of which he would secret. The supply of ammunition was gradually increased, and the time given him to be absent was extended two or three days. With this increase of rations o powder and bullets and extension of time, he ventured to make escape, and got a start so far ahead that the Indians could see no hopeful chance of recapturing him. It is nothing but just to remark Moses Moore is one of the pioneers of this county who will be among those longest remembered in the future by those interested in our pioneer literature. Moses Moore's descendants have proably cleared more land than any one family connection; some of them have been and are prominent in public affairs. The following particulars were mainly furnished by the venerableAndrew Washington Moore, one of his grandsons, now in the 83rd year of his age, residing on Knapps Creek and occupying a part of the old ancestral homestead. About 1770 Moses Moore settled on Knapps Creek, known about that period as Ewing's Creek, and so named in some of the land papers. Traces of the orginal cabin remained for years in the meadow near the old orchard contiguous to Washington Moore's present residence. The tract of land extended from Andrew Herold's to Dennis Dever's gate by the roadside below the Francis Dever homestead. Besides other improvements, Mr. Moore built a mill on Mill Run."

  3. 4.  Rebecca Nancy* Moore Descendancy chart to this point (1.Moses*1) was born about 1745; died in May 1800 in en route to Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

    Notes:

Nancy Moore, according to various family records was one of three wives of John Wear. She was the daughter of Moses Moore, quite likely the same Capt. Moses Moore in whose company John Wear served four months in the Revolutionary War. It is believed that John Wear's second and third wives were Margaret and Diana.

Nancy's name is also given as Rebecca in Notable Southern Families where it states:
"Mary Thompson died in 1797 and Samuel married Polly (Mary) Gilliand a few years later. Polly was the daughter of John and Margaret Gilliand. Margaret Gilliand was a daughter of Moses and Jane Moore and sister of John Wear's wife Rebecca."
In support of this, they did name a daughter Rebecca. On John's application for a Revolutionary War pension, John Wear gives his birthdate as 12 January 1741. John Wilkinson says that John's wife Nancy Moore, the daughter of Moses and Jane Moore.

    Died:
Early in the spring of 1800 John Wear, Nathan Wilkinson, and others including Obediah Lovelady journeyed in small boats from Fine's Ferry on French Broad River at the mouth of Nolachuck River destined for Boone's settlement on the Missouri River. Generally the Indians were friendly and helpful, but towards the end of their journey they encountered hostile Cherokees who were waging war with the Kikapoo. They were led by John Watts who gave John Wear the same protection he had given to Robert Wear and the party landed safely at Fort Massac about the first of May and continued on to the Mississippi River and settled near the swamps in the vicinity of Old Jackson. They were immediately taken sick with fever. Many of the party died among them Nancy Moore, John Wear's wife, and his son John and the rest only survived due to the care given them by the Indians.

Rebecca married John* Wear about 1765 in Rockbridge Co, Virginia. John* (son of Robert* Wear and Rebecca* Carrell) was born on 12 Jan 1741 in Bucks Co, Pennsylvania; died on 17 Jan 1835 in Sevier Co, Tennessee. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

However, I have found documentation that she was indeed a child of John Gilliland but his wife was Elizabeth Young, daughter of Robert Young and Mary Douglass.

Rebecca married Nathan Wilkinson 20 Aug 1792 in Washington County, North Carolina (Tennessee). John Wilkinson's AUTOBIOGRAPHY AND HISTORICAL REMINISCENCES written between 1861-67 provides a wealth of information about the Wear family and travels, including his grandfather's journey to Cape Girardeau and back in the year 1800.

They were led by John Watts who gave John Wear the same protection he had given to Ro.bert Wear and the party landed safely at Fort Massac about the first of May and continued on to the Mississippi River and settled near the swamps in the vicinity of Old Jackson. They were immediately taken sick with fever. Many of the party died among them Nancy Moore, John Wear's wife, and his son John and the rest only survived due to the care given them by the Indians.

    Notes:

Jackson county was formed out of Lafayette in 1826. John W. Lovelady migrated to Lafayette county prior to 1820. Other family members followed from TN later.

John W was born about 1795 and died in Lafayette Co, Missouri on 1 Dec 1869. He went to Missouri in 1817 and with Solomon Cox made the first settlement in Dover Township of Lafayette Co. He was married to Mary Cox, daughter of Enoch Cox of Grayson Co, Virginia in Jan 1818 by the Rev Martin Trapp. It was the first marriage in the county. Their twin daughters were the first born in the county. He is listed on the 1840, 1850, and 1860 Census (Lafayette Co, Missouri). The 1850 Census lists him as John Lowlady.
His widow Mary was living with her daughter Sally Myers in 1870. Mary (Polly) died 16 Apr 1892 in Lafayette Co, Missouri.

    Residence:
The History of Lafayette County MO (page 414) tells us that the first settlement was made by John Lovelady and Solomon Cox in 1817 and this was a half mile west of present-day Dover, MO. James Bounds Sr., James Bounds Jr., Obadiah Bounds, William R. Cole are also mentioned here. Christopher Jago, Wm. Carpenter and John Parkerson, all from TN in 1819 and Zachariah Linville, a Stonite preacher, Martin Trapp, a reformed preacher, John Welsh, Jesse Nelson, Enoch Fox, Wm. Fox (they both say Fox, but are likely to be Cox), Dyer Cash and Joseph Cantrell all came in 1818. I searched each of these names in the 1800, 1810, 1830 census records and none are from SC.

The History of Lafayette County (page 415) also tells us that James? older brother John Lovelady was the first marriage in the county, in January, 1818 to Miss Mary Cox, daughter of Enoch Cox of Grayson Co. VA, and their twin daughters were the first children later that year.

referred to by nephew Joseph R. Young in letter written to James and Nancy Lovelady: I saw Uncle John Lovelady at Dover [Lafayette county, MO] while on the raid with Price the fall of 64. He looked stout and scarcely a gray hair in his head. I had been on a scout out near the groves(?) and I saw at least 20 thousand Federals [numbers seem high in the letter] bearing (?) on our left and being in command of the scout [assume NCO or junior officer] I had to report to Price under the spur and did not get to talk to Uncle John. We fought that evening at Lexington, 2 days after at Blue Mills. Next day at Big Blue [ a river ]. I fought at your old place near Blue Bridge.

James Lovelady was a minister of the Christian Church (restoration movement, known as Cambellites - Karl Kiser). James and Nancy removed from White County, Tennessee, with other members of their family to Missouri by 1831, where James helped to organize the Salem Christian Church in Platte Co, Missouri. The family was in Victoria County, Texas by 1845, when James and Nancy were on the Board of the First Christian Church. James and Nancy had three children, all daughters.
    (1.) Jane (married Jackson Butts on 29 Jan 1835, in Jackson Co., Missouri);
(2.) Sarah (married M. M. Jones and died in DeWitt County, Texas, in 1860); and
(3.) Ann (married A. Lee on 4 Nov 1847, in Victoria County, Texas).
Sadly, all three of James and Nancy's daughters died relatively young. However, they remained on close terms with their sons-in-law.

the following provided by Mary Ehlers, 3665 N. Bond, Fresno CA 93726:
James was born 1790-1800 according to 1840 Census (Platte Co, Missouri), married Nancy; died in Texas after 1880 when he was listed in the household of grandson George Jones in San Saba County.
James was in Missouri by 1831 when he and wife Nancy, with William Bowers and wife Catherine, deeded land to Thomas Linville. (see notes of Nancy Linville Lovelady).

Our local library has "Missouri Miscellany". It is nothing more than a hodgepodge of genealogical items that some publisher threw together into a series of volumes. From Volume I, Woodruff, 1976:
"24 Dec 1831, William Bowers and Catherine, his wife & James Lovelady and Nancy, his wife, to Thomas Linville sum of $120.00, E 1/2 of SW Quarter of Section 36, Township 50, Range 33, 80 acres. Witness: George Manship J.P., Rec 31 May 1832 Jackson County, MO)

This is all there is and probably would not be considered a 'source' as it does not give any other details like a deed would.

(This is not our James. It is the son of John Lovelady. He was born in 1760 and died in 1837 or so. John was the brother of Thomas Lovelady (John Reedy)

1833: James Lovelady is likely to have some additional interesting details from October 1833 (Battle of Mormons or Battle of Big Blue--Kaw township, Jackson county, MO). I have not had a chance to fully follow the clues. The Mormons had a colony west of the Big Blue and there was violence because the Mormons voted in block and others took exception. A Thomas Linville was killed 31 Oct 1833. (Karl Kiser, 4 Mar 2010)

Sarah (19) - probably newlywed living with Mara at Stephen's.
Ann married in 1847. If this is Sarah -- then where is Ann? Ann would be under 10 per the 1830 census when she wasn't born yet. This has to be Ann even though it's the wrong age group. That means Sarah isn't accounted for here.

Mary writes, "I had lost all trace of Pa's and George's whereabouts. I had written to Henry Shapes to know if he knew where Grandpa was. I have not received an answer."
"Mr. Dabney and Brother came by on their way home from Lyons where they had been holding a meeting. He said they had seen Grandpa and George."
Lyons is in Burleson County, but this only indicates there were at a meeting there. Perhaps they were living nearby. Frances writes a letter, estimated as 1877, stating she had "not heard from Burleson" She and George were in Red Rock and she stated that James Lovelady had left there - so, not sure who was in Burleson.

    Census:
Frances living in Red Rock, dates her letter simply "May." Guessing this is about 1877. She writes to Susan Bounds Butts
"Pap started down to Lavaca about two or three weeks ago. He went by Mary's. I expect he will stay there some time. I got a letter from Mary the same day I got yours. She was well and doing well."
Leonard surmised Mary was in Burleson, but that would not be enroute from Red Rock to Lavaca. Perhaps this was after Nancy died, or perhaps it was after Mr. Norton died. Mary might have still been living near LaGrange.

Several Christians were in the very first wagon train to take the Applegate Trail, and the leaders of this train were
Christians. This was the train led by brothers-in-law Harrison Linville and Medders Vanderpool. Vanderpool was married to Margaret Linville, a younger sister to Harrison. Among the other Christians in this train were John Bird Bounds and his wife, Elizabeth Lovelady Bounds. Their oldest daughter, Nancy Bounds Linville, was married to Harrison Linville.

Except for one 77-year-old man, the oldest travelers in the
train were Richard and Mary Linville, both in their 70s. They were the parents of Harrison Linville, Margaret Vanderpool and Catherine Crowley.

Thomas and Mary ("Aunt Polly") Lovelady were also in
this train. He was a brother to Elizabeth Bounds. Three other Christian families in this train were Absalom and Mary Ann Faulconer, Robert and Sarah Lancefield, and John Burris and Emily Smith. John Burris Smith was a gospel preacher, and his arrival brought the number of Christian preachers in Oregon to four.

    ---
Another account of this pioneering train on the Applegate
Trail commented: "The travelers found a shortage of food for
their livestock, a scarcity of game for their own food and
backbreaking toil in building a track for their wagons."28
Unfortunately, they also had to confront the horrors of death on the trail. In a period of just ten days, Harrison and Nancy Linville each lost a parent.
Elizabeth Bounds, Nancy's mother, died from the privations of the trail on November 13 and was buried the next day. She died near present-day Roseburg in Douglas County. After burying her on the trail, the wagons passed over the road several times to obliterate any sign of the grave. This was done to eliminate any possibility of Indians robbing her grave or of wild animals digging up her grave.

Served in War of 1812 for Tennessee. Enlisted 12/10/1812 under Col. Thomas Benton, Capt. Benjamin Hewitt.
The Lovelady/Bounds homestead was located on a stream called Falling Water which is now in Putnam Co., TN.

Thomas Jesse (sic) Lovelady married Amanda Mary "Polly" Bounds 8 Aug. 1827 in White Co., TN.
(per Karl: Thomas J. Lovelady (Polly Bounds): his middle name isn't Jesse. Jesse son of the older Moses Lovelady (bc 1803) went to OR, claimed land and later returned to MO. People assumed the Jesse was simply the middle name of TJL.)

Thomas J. Lovelady (Polly Bounds) and Elizabeth Lovelady (John Bird Bounds) came to Oregon via the first wagon train over the Southern Route in 1846. This would be the Applegate Trail.

One can follow Thomas J. Lovelady through the census records. Birth and marriage in TN, children in TN, MO, & Oregon Territory. He and Polly still have descendants living in Oregon.

Dallas was settled in the 1840s on the north side of Rickreall Creek and was originally named "Cynthian" or "Cynthiana". A 1947 "Itemizer-Observer" article (quoted in 100 Years in Polk County: A Centennial Background) states: "[T]he town was called Cynthiana after Cynthiana, Ky., so named by Mrs. Thos. Lovelady." The History of Polk County Oregon, 1987, Page 12, states: "To Mrs. Thomas J. Lovelady was given the honor of naming the new settlement and she selected the name after her home town of Cynthiana, Kentucky." (findagrave)

    Name:
some researchers indicate the middle initial J is for "Jesse." However, this is a confusion that came from the Jesse Lovelady listed in Oregon. He should be the son of Moses son of James of Smith Co, Tennessee. We do not know the exact relationship between James of Smith Co, Tennessee, and our Thomas Lovelady/Jane Ware. (Karl Kiser)

Christians on the Oregon Trail: Churches of Christ
and Christian Churches in Early Oregon,
    1842-1882

    http://digitalcommons.pepperdine.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1004&context=heritage_center

    -----
Some of the wagons in the Linville-Vanderpool train
reached their destination in Polk County in late November,
and others were delayed until late December. The Linvilles
spent their first winter in Polk County at Jesse Applegate's
place on Salt Creek. Harrison Linville soon selected a
donation land claim on the Luckiamute River not far from
where John and David Lewis and their wives had settled the
year before. The Lewis families had taken possession of
rectangular claims of 640 acres for each couple on land formed by the forks of the Luckiamute River. John and Elizabeth settled on the west bank and David and Mary on the east bank. The north-south road that formed the border between the two claims became the main street of Lewisville.

The Loveladys were thrilled to see the Glen Owen Burnett
family again. They had left Missouri together and had
traveled together on the trail for many miles before the
Loveladys and others had decided to detour on the Applegate
Trail. The Loveladys settled temporarily on land adjacent to
the Glen Owen Burnett family, and on occasion the two
Christian families ate dinner together; Burnett reported that "the daily bill of fare" for the two families consisted of "wheat bread without shortening, sometimes meat if a deer had been killed, Irish potatoes roasted in the ashes or boiled in clear water, and boiled wheat with salt, and for a beverage coffee made of parched peas."

However, the Loveladys soon moved to a more desirable
claim two miles east of present-day Dallas along the banks of Rickreall Creek. This made them neighbors to the Fords,
Goffs, and Lyles. The support of the Loveladys greatly
strengthened the little congregation that was meeting on
Sundays in the Jefferson Institute log cabin, and Glen Owen

Burnett kept up a regular appointment of preaching for this
congregation. Thomas Lovelady became active in civic affairs. In fact, the first three judges appointed in Polk County were Thomas Lovelady, Harrison Linville, and David R. Lewis.

The Christians had arrived in Polk County in significant
numbers, and they were making their presence known.

    A. J. LOVELADY
    (Farmer, Section 23, Post-office, Weston).

We utter but the truth when we say that one of the truly good men of this county, and a man who is respected by everybody, whose character and influence stand out as an exception to the general rule of men in this day, is the subject of this sketch. Mr. Lovelady is now in his seventieth year, having been born October 18, 1815, in White County, Tenn. His father, Thomas Lovelady, who came originally from South Carolina, married Miss Jane Ware, whose birthplace is now included in the State of West Virginia. The father died in Tennessee. Young Lovelady was brought up on the old family homestead in the State of his birth, until the age of 17, when he settled in Jackson county, Mo. now has become one of the successful farmers and stock-raisers of the county. His landed possessions embrace 300 acres, a place which is excelled by none in this community. But more important and better than this he is an upright, sincere man. He is a member of no church, but what others talk of he does. When it becomes necessary for him to die, it can be said with truth that he was

?Formed on the good old plan,
A true and brave and downright honest man!
He blew no trumpet in the market-place,
Nor in the church with hypocitic face
    Supplied with cant the lack of Christian grace;
Loathing pretense he did with cheerful will
What others talked of, while their hands were still.?

Mr. Lovelady was married June 8, 1840, to Miss Juda Newby, a Kentuckian by birth. She died February 2, 1885. There had been 13 children born, five of whom are living: Cynthia, now Mrs. I. E. Graves ; Nannie, wife of P. Layton; Maud, wife of C. Thorpe; James and Lee.
